I used to know three people from Kankakee so confirmation bias tells me it's 100%

This is a third-hand story but my friend told me a story his professor told him about a prestigious scientific institution he worked at.

They were handling massive amounts of data and working with state-of-the-art equipment. But also they had a 20-year-old printer in the basement that nobody ever uses but it must remain connected and on.

The reason: At some point when the printer was new somebody wrote code referring to this printer. And then code referring to that code, and more code referring to that code, and so on. For years and years. So now whenever the printer is disconnected the entire system refuses to work.

It's a load-bearing printer.

The solution to this problem is to either find the code referring to the printer among all the millions of lines of code in their system and change it (very difficult and could have unforeseen consequences) or to just keep the printer on.
