I think it was high school when i overheard some white girl put on her best semi-disgusted and confused voice and go “why do so many Mexicans dress up like cowboys?” and I had to be the person to tell her.

also, cowboy culture was hella gay. like, write-poems-about-your-cowboy-partner gay.

IF people acknowledge it, they play the necessity card– there weren’t any women out on the range, so they had to “resort to men.” this claim completely erases 1) the romantic (not just sexual) writings of actual cowboys, 2) the acknowledgement of cowboys’ potential homosexual activity by writers at the time, and 3) the possibility that some men would deliberately become cowboys with the intent to seek out homosexual encounters.

no one wants to admit it, but cowboy culture was just. so inherently gay.

i dont get offended at white people jokes even though im white because: 

  1. i can recognize white people as a whole have systemically oppressed POC in america, which is where i live 
  2. most people when they make white people jokes only mean the shitty white people and i am not a shitty white person 
  3. im not a pissbaby

It’s hard to be offended when white people jokes involve bland food/tourist dads in socks and sandals/white girls in yoga pants obsessed with pumpkin spice/suburban PTA moms and other harmless and mostly true stereotypes while jokes about POC involve them being called thugs/criminals/slurs/uneducated/illegal immigrants.

The 14th Amendment

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States…”

These words were not added to the U.S. Constitution, initially, with the children of immigrants in mind. They were added in order to assert the citizenship of enslaved people who were recently emancipated, and their children. So when Republicans start attacking the 14th Amendment and the concept of birthright citizenship, they pretend that they’re only attacking undocumented immigrants but, as in all ideas from the stronghold of American institutionalized white supremacy, they’re also attacking the legitimacy of the citizenship of every Black American who is a descendant of formerly enslaved people.

how/when to use the acronym PoC / poc / POC:

  • not in front of a noun. why would you say “PoC author” when you can say “author of colour”? poc isnt an adjective. similarly, “poc” + noun should just be noun + “of colour”
  • not pluralised like PoCs. you know people of colour is already plural. (people of colour)s makes no sense. stop.
  • not when you’re referring to a specific race. just say black or asian or whatever. there is no “poc” experience. cease.
  • do use it when you’re talking about people who aren’t white. even tho it’s not strictly a dichotomy, saying “not white” places white as the default.

tldr just stop throwing it around like it’s an adjective + stop being embarrassing

Non-black students should be very hesitant before speaking in politically black spaces. If you can Google it, take a class, or ask a friend then don’t speak. You will be doing everyone in the room a favor. You are contributing to the mobility of the discussion by not contributing. Only in non-black, non-political spaces and in the event that a black voice is being silenced, you may echo them. You have non-black privilege and may be taken more seriously. If you really want to help the cause just re-iterate what has already been said. Otherwise, do not steal their agency and ownership of a narrative by speaking on behalf of them. You cannot “engage in conversation” because black people and their experiences have nothing to do with you. By not speaking sometimes, you are able to contribute by simply listening.

Like seriously why aren’t we talking about the fact that white trans people like Brandon Teena and Leelah Alcorn are made into symbols, have foundations opened immediately for them, are turned into fucking movies, but the names of TWOC like Islan Nettles, Alejandra Leos, Nizah Morris, Tiffany Edwards, Zoraida Reyes, Kandy Hall, and Yaz’min Shancez don’t even escape our fucking mouths.

if youre white stop saying ‘im sorry for being white’ or ‘as a white person, i’m sorry’ it makes you sound like youre distancing yourself from the issue. circulate posts as needed. don’t speak over us and stay aware of the system you benefit from. we dont need an ‘apology’
