I think he is also in love with Edwin just that it has become second nature for him so he doesn't understand the difference between loving and being in love, for him, Edwin Payne is his entire being and nothing is changing that for him
So what does it matter what love he holds for him as long as he is there beside him every second? For Charles, Edwin is a constant, his anchor, his reason of being. He chose Edwin over whatever GOD had to offer him!? He doesn't understand the reason for defining what loving and being in love means to him because, for him, love is just there. It's everywhere (as long as he's with Edwin)
