Just a quick post of a custom journal I made a few weeks ago. This cover paper is hand silk-screened. It has a raised texture and a glossy shine that mimics Japanese lacquerware.

I mailed out this fabulous custom envelope book to @thetamehuman this week.

I can’t thank her enough for her enthusiasm for the prototype book I made a few weeks ago. We decided on this great black and silver floral paper for the cover, with a selection of rainbow papers for the inside envelopes.

Purple Flower Blossom Sketchbook

Here’s a little video of yesterday’s journal that shows off the gold screen printing a little better.

Chiyogami paper is printed by hand using multiple screens and requires precise alignment by skilled artisans. The base paper is made of kozo, cultivated mulberry bark, which is still traditionally made in Japan. The inks are fade resistant and are well suited for daily handling.

These beautiful papers have always inspired my work, from when I started out making origami ornaments and cards, through my paper cutting, and now into my book binding.

I don’t spend enough time talking about the papers I use, so I’m going to start trying to give you more information about the handmade papers I use in every single work I make.

Wisteria and Cranes Sketchbook

My garden has been influencing my work. We bought this house a few years ago, and the previous owner had planted these low cover plants. In the spring they bloom with these beautiful purple flowers. Despite my back, I had to take advantage while the weather was nice to take some photos. Visit my Instagram to see how perfectly they match the purple endpapers I used in this journal.
