hi guys quick intro i’m mars or arc or flash if uve know me that long, i’m 21, and i use they/he/it pronouns. my twitter is greensundog & my ao3 is parhelionic, but i don’t have anything posted rn on ao3. (do not fear if you want to read my old fics they’re still up, i just anonymized them bc i wrote them when i was 16 😬 ill give you links if you ask though). i don’t have a twitter.

i post whatever the fuck i want ^_^ currently trying to get back into fic writing, but that’s... actually going decently knock on wood.

On that note, Mina seems to no longer walk on eggshells for his nerves. She's firm with him, lifting a hand and saying "No! Don't delude me. I am dead." When he tries to bargain against essentially burying her, she says "It would comfort me, my husband." and that's that.

You set me on a spiral because I was gonna say something about how in general Jonathan uses endearments a lot less than Mina, but then I wondered by how much and did a bunch of searching. And now I've compiled a Harker endearments breakdown. At least for the ones I remembered them using.

Couple notes - some form of dear is said by everyone a lot. Van Helsing, Lucy, and Mina especially. For the Harkers, mostly they only say these various terms aloud when comforting the other or in very emotionally fraught moments. The rest of the time it is typically in writing about the other. I only specified the difference between said to/about for my husband/wife but generally most endearments are about the person.

Jonathan -> Mina: 20 total

  • dear: 10 (dear x2, [described her hand as] the dearest thing in all the wide world, poor dear, the dear girl, her dear cheeks, the poor dear, my dear one, poor dear Mina, my dear Mina)

There was no real point to this except it's fun to look at. And I like seeing how much Mina loves to talk about her husband. She emphasizes herself as his wife several times too, especially at the beginning.

Sorry, I know this got totally away from what you were talking about. As for that conversation, both Jonathan and Mina are emphasizing their relationship to one another. Him to plead not to do this, her to insist that he is the one wants most to do it. And while she's gentle about it, she's also firm.

I think we talked about this last year but Mina uses "my" about Jonathan wildly more often than the other way around

When Jonathan talks about Mina it's almost as a constant - she needs no introduction, she's inevitable, just always indelibly there. And part of that is that he's writing in his own private diary most of the time where like, obviously she needs no introduction. But she still functions as like a permanent piece of his mental landscape.

Whereas Mina is clearly very very excited about the fact that he is HERS, specifically. She calls him MY HUSBAND twenty-seven times which is doubly remarkable since she can't start until almost a third of the way through the book. This is something she is into.

Yes exactly! Jonathan uses a total of twelve possessives ("my __"), whereas Mina uses forty. That's more than double! She absolutely loves it.

Count Dracula in the original novel was so many different things all woven together.

On the “allegory for real evil” side of things there’s:

  • Count Dracula as a relic from a dark and violent period of history
  • Count Dracula as an aristocrat sucking the life out of the lower classes
  • Count Dracula as a sexual predator

And on the “supernatural horror” side of things there’s:

  • Count Dracula as a disease that modern medicine cannot possibly explain or cure
  • Count Dracula as an unnatural bestial predator just barely maintaining the mask of humanity
  • Count Dracula stealing the free will of his victims and causing their personalities to die while their bodies continue to walk about

He’s a multilayered villain where every new layer is just a new kind of villainy.

But various adaptations over the past century have basically invented the idea of Dracula as a seductive corrupting force, decided to make that his whole deal, and then decided that Dracula must not be that bad and people in Victorian England were clearly only scared of him because they were scared of sexuality.

Yeah Novel!Dracula was a literal horrific monster on so many different levels, yet that was a huge part of his appeal. He’s an otherworldly beast mixed with an elegant yet predatory and violent man.

Studies show that approaching youth with a bystander-intervention model is actually a lot more effective for reducing sexual assault, and it is also more enthusiastically received than programs that bill themselves as anti-rape.
We can tell youth that they are basically “rapists waiting to happen” (anti-rape initiative), or we can tell them that we know they would intervene if they saw harm happening to someone and we want to help empower them to do that (bystander intervention). The kids jump in with both feet for the latter! It was amazing to see children (and young boys in particular) excited to do this work and engage their creativity with it. Also, studies show that not only do they go on to intervene, but they also do not go on to sexually assault people themselves. Bystander intervention also takes the onus off the person being targeted to deter rape and empowers the collective to do something about it. It answers the question in the room when giggling boys are carrying an unconscious young woman up the stairs at a house party, and people are not sure how to respond and are waiting for “someone” to say or do something.

This is also, btw, how the US drastically reduced drunk driving in the US. Telling people they shouldn’t drive when intoxicated made absolutely zero difference. A slogan-and-ad-campaign for “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk!” changed drinking culture. Going after the bystanders is quite often the most effective thing to do in any social change.

AITA for not telling my fiancé I know he’s queer? 

I 20s (F) have a 20s (M) fiancé, V, and he’s been talking about this terrible secret he cannot tell me and he keeps almost starting to come out and then backing out. The issue is V and I were raised together by his parents, and my surrogate 40s (M) father and (now deceased) surrogate mother arranged for our marriage back when we were both children. They thought it was the best for us and at the time we were too young to realize the implications and had no reason to reject to the match. When we were teenagers our mother was on her deathbed and she told us again that she wished for us to marry, and of course we both agreed. However, V is also best friends with a 20s (M) guy called H, and they were nearly inseparable as boys and teens. They also went to university together and shared an apartment but V had to come home due to family reasons. Lately he’s been going out all day and coming home at night hours later. He insists that he’s fine and that we all leave him alone and not worry for him, but I think he and H have been sneaking around. He even delayed our wedding day by arranging a trip to go to England alone with H. It’s exhausting for all of us and I think I should just tell V I know and support him and that we can call off the marriage, but I’m not sure that’s the best course of action? I’m completely fine with not marrying him - he always felt more like a brother to me anyway - but I worry it might come off wrong. The worst part is he’s really beating himself up about it. He’s so guilty it’s beginning to take a toll on his health. I don’t care if he has a boyfriend I just want him to be happy.

I originally included colloidal silver spray because of the linked study and recommendation from RTHM, but I don't want to be pointing people toward something with notable health risks. Xylitol spray (Xlear) is also cheaper and more widely available!
