Tsunade's reaction to Kakashi walking away:
#naruto#naruto manga#meta#this is obviously a crucial kakashi scene and i take it seriously#but on a lighter note it's amusing to look back on this and see tsunade's first real attempt to give kakashi an order#she's been out of the village for a long time and has not interacted with him since he was a child#but he was an ENORMOUS pain in everyone's ass back then too#and she comes back after like. twenty years#and the first time she tries to tell him what to do he says 'no' and walks out of her office and does the exact opposite#like - that is the face of a woman who is suddenly remembering that her best employee had an authority problem at age 5#on a more serious level though -#there is something wildly compelling to me about this. about them.#'don't worry yourself' is an insane thing to say to the hokage before you shut the door in her face and abscond to do whatever tf you want#but equally insane is the fact that she LETS HIM GO.#she's flustered - taken aback at the blatant disobedience - but ultimately?#she still lets him go. she does not chase him. she does not tell the gatekeepers to stop him at the wall.#she does not interfere with his decision to disobey her OR his choice to save the children#NOT because she doesn't know how to enforce her will or punish people who make her job harder#it's because despite the decision she's been trapped into making#some part of her hears kakashi's unapologetic defiance and recognizes that he's right.#just. i'm thinking about kakashi and tsunade in part ii and how much she trusts him and how heavily she relies on him#and how deeply he respects her but also how he isn't afraid of her#tsunade knew kakashi was meant to be hokage long before kakashi did. she told jiraiya as much in the pain arc.#she's known it for years. the scene above was the first sign she got.#i think...for tsunade kakashi represents someone who succeeded where she 'failed' (quotes bc i don't think she 'failed' at anything)#because - like jiraiya - she ran away and gave up hope while kakashi stayed and endured and kept trying and trying and trying#and now look at him. grown-up and transformed into someone who doesn't apologize for disobeying orders in order to save lives#he's transcended his father's legacy. he's sakumo without the crippling shame.#i think tsunade thinks about that a lot.
