WE ARE ALL CRYING
pk subban went through hell for that team. he endured worse or at least more overt racism than he was likely to get in almost any other nhl city. he was constantly scapegoated by his coaches and managers. he was told he had image and attitude issues - for being good (“be twice as good to get half as much” – and he was), for knowing he was good, for being happy and friendly and cheerful. he stayed upbeat and refused to let the racists win. every goddamn time. and i’m willing to bet that at least part of that had to do with him knowing there were little black hockey players watching him, wanting to be him. he did so much for montreal. he did so much for the kids in that city. he spent so much time with young hockey players. he donated at least 10 million to the children’s hospital - that’s over five times as much as the sedins donated to the vancouver children’s hospital TOGETHER. and how do the habs pay him back? they keep their terrible, shitty coach, and make pk the scapegoat one last time, and they ditch him in an insultingly bad and uneven trade.
This is P.K. Subban. He makes about $7 million a year playing for the Montreal Canadiens.
He has also committed himself to donating a minimum of $10 million to the Montreal Children’s hospital over the next 7 years. Think about that. That’s well over a year’s worth of salary. It is also the largest single donation by an athlete in Canadian history.
He believes that when parents have a sick child, they shouldn’t have to worry about money; they should just worry about helping their kid get better. He also feels a responsibility to give back to a community that has given him so much.
He also gave much of his speech in French. He takes French lessons twice a week so that he can better connect with the city he plays for. When asked about the donation, he said: "It’s not about the money; it’s about leading by example and bringing a community together. In Montreal, this is my city just as much as it’s yours. It’s my job as well to make a commitment to this city that everyone can understand. If because I play for the Montreal Canadiens and people know me because of that and I can use that to raise money for the hospital, that’s my responsibility. I feel that.“
I am crying.
“For me, it’s taking the step forward, it’s taking the initiative to lead by example. It’s not about the money; it’s about leading by example and bringing a community together. In Montreal, this is my city just as much as it’s yours. It’s my job as well to make a commitment to this city that everyone can understand. If because I play for the Montreal Canadiens and people know me because of that and I can use that to raise money for the hospital, that’s my responsibility. I feel that.” - P.K. Subban donates $10 million to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the the biggest philanthropic commitment by a sports figure in Canadian history.
