HOW DO THEY KEEP THEIR HATS ON. It is wimdy on a beach! This is a question that has long plagued me: a couple of hairpins, nay, a couple of 6-inch hatpins, will not keep those chapeaux attached!

His technique matches an instruction printed in an 1863 issue of the Semi-Weekly Wisconsin of Milwaukee: “Put thumb to nose, and gyrate the extended fingers for a moment.”
