Struggling HARD to find this post but im certain i saw you reblog it do you have a link to that one post about piper having a youtube channel and posting about exotic pets all named frank😭??
I know exactly what post you're talking about and I know I've reblogged it, but I can't find it either.....
how can you say that post about piper was all from native people when there are people who literally state int heir bio's that they are white? for example the checklist of what not to do when drawing piper?, that was written by a white person
3 general links not leading to any particular person (x, x, x)
2 posts by black bloggers (x, x), one of which was specifically about drawing dark skin, not about Native people.
2 linking to my own tags or posts (I’m white), none of which were actually specifically about drawing Piper or critiquing her rep.
1 linking to another white person (which was directly based on other posts written by Native people)....
the fact that you ignored all of the posts by Indigenous bloggers to find the one (1!) post i linked which was written by another white person.......it super sounds like you didn’t actually read it and were instead just looking for a reason to discount the entire post. Your example was literally the only available example.
If you’re Indigenous and you have a genuine concern with my post or with me, you may of course message me about it, and I will be 100% willing to correct it, edit it, or anything else!
This, however, sounds very much like you merely wanted an excuse to keep drawing piper however you want and not listen to anything indigenous people said in any of the aforementioned links.
I know this is random but ppl talking about rr doing his research dont know how shitty his research truly is. As a pagan im biased but his myth research is shit. A good portion of his myths weren't even from the greeks, biggest one being medusas backstory and peresphone and hades story (both roman origin, bot beileved or told by anyone.) Obviously this is much less worse than his other lack of research failings but like even when he cares he doesnt ♡ sorry for bein random im just a mad pagan lol
tw ahead: ableist language (l*me)
2. Same mad pagan also rycky rat knows dooki bullshit abiut egyptian mythology, he doesnt even understand basics like how the duat works, the fact that Horus was an uber generic name and there where two major Horus' (elder and son of isis), some gods comboed with Ra are literally just Ra (Amun espically!) And others arent at all (Sobek, HORUS!!). Also in general removed SW asians from AEgpyt for shallow black rep, Ra in the nursing home was yikes, and it was also lame (objective fact)
I’ve gotta be honest with you I remember almost nothing from TKC, and only stuff from like the first book, so i don’t really know what you’re referencing there. But from what i remember i do get what you mean about him not having much SW Asian folks in the series.
I am also pagan (and omnist), but since I don’t personally worship any of the Roman, Greek, or Egyptian pantheons, I don’t think I can speak on those specific ones, so I’ll just leave that open ended from your comments.
I will say though, it does irritate me how Rick portrays these non-christian religions he isn’t apart of. Like yes, Roman, Greek, and Egyptian pantheons and lore are fairly mainstream across Europe and the middle east, so he’s not intruding as much as he would be if he’d chosen smaller or more marginalized religious groups, but still.
Like the entire premise of the series is that these Gods being real is what separates the story worlds from real life, as if no one actually still holds beliefs in any of these Gods. Plus constantly referring to religions you’re not apart of as “mythologies” always rubs me the wrong way because it implies they’re myths in the first place, rather than genuine, deeply-rooted cultural beliefs which are still upheld and respected by people from those cultures.
Oh yeah that’s the one! and i read twilight when i was like twelve and was attempting to see if the fandom was still alive.
ah, I see! the fandom appears to, unfortunately, be alive.... good luck to all the marginalized people (esp native folks) in that fandom because......yikes.
I am very fortunate to have avoided ever reading Twilight.
Can we drop the Piper - Pocahontas thing? Everyone’s moved on, except you!
If everyone has moved on why am I still getting asks about it???? Um????
Believe me, I’m absolutely tired of it too and don’t want it to be a thing. But it is, and in fact the creator still continues to post more of it.
I do tag all the posts about it as “that dam pocahontas au” if you want to block the tag, and if it’s triggering to you (ex: you’re a poc and don’t want to deal with the racism) you can always ask me to add a trigger warning!
Again, I’m tired of it too. It’s not like I’m stirring this up for the drama or because I enjoy talking about it. I’m posting about it because, a) it’s a problem. Racists posting in the Piper tag is a problem, and it will continue to be a problem as long as it’s happening, which it is and has been, and, b) people have continued to bring it up to me since I posted telling people to block them.
All I’ve posted about the issue is telling people to block and report them because they’re a racist who is actively posting racism in the tags of an Indigenous character, which is extremely harmful both to indigenous fans and to people who will learn the same behavior from them.
And beyond the initial event, the only thing I’ve posted about it has been answering asks I’ve gotten. It is extremely unwarranted for you to send this ask after I answered one! anon I got about it.
Again if you are an indigenous person who has a genuine concern, please message me. But please don’t send me random passive aggressive anons.
It’s @/blogjoehaze, but as I’ve said before, please just block/report, don’t attempt to spam them with more call outs—they’ve been told by many people, including several indigenous bloggers and other people of color, that what they’re doing is racist, and they’ve only doubled down.
So please only use the url to block, report, & tell other people to do the same.
If you need more native models or actors there are a lot of people in the twilight fandom (bear with me) who compile lists to avoid white-washing the native characters. I know that @/leahclearwaterdefensesquad has made a list of native models for reference, and I’m sure there are a couple of others who did the same thing.
oooh handy, is this it? It’s got a lot of the same actors/models I already knew but there’s a few new ones I didn’t know about, so that’s neat. My only thing is I wish they’d put the nations / tribes of each person because like. it’s good to know.
I might actually make a page for piper refs if I find / make the right code theme for that, maybe organized by language family of tribe, age, etc.
hi! I recently saw your master post on piper McLean and how (not) to draw her. it was very well written and informative, but I just have one question. I'm unsure of what you mean by "boho headbands"? maybe this is a cultural thing (I'm not american) but I genuinely don't have a clue what it's referencing. sorry if this is rude! hope you're having a nice day
first a note: I believe “b-ho” is an anti romani racist term. I don’t think OP knew/intended that, but just a note maybe not to use the term, though I understand you were just copying the language of the post. (see this and this)
Basically, I don’t know if it’s as common anymore (or I might’ve blocked all the people who still draw her that way), but lots of people used to draw Piper with this little “hipster” headband along with the feathers, even though I don’t think it ever appeared in canon. People just made it up bc they thought a native girl would wear it, I guess, and then it got spread around.
It pretty much looks like this, you can probably see it all over if you look up “piper mclean fanart” on google.
I don’t think it’s really an american thing, since it’s originally based in anti Rromani racism and while there are absolutely Rromani people in america, the Rromani population in Europe is a lot bigger and older, therefore the anti rromani racism tends to be a lot more established there too. The more American part of it is that hipster styles have drawn from Native stereotypes here too. In general the whole idea of giving Piper that headband thing was just blatant racism.
That post you made with possible references to draw Piper, the girl at top right corner (I'm on the phone's browser and it doesn't show the name) is exactly how I always imagined her (just shorter hair). I was kind of surprised the first time I saw how people draw her.
If you mean this post, that’d be Jamie Loy! She’s Tsalagi/Cherokee like Piper so she’s a good choice for a ref (she is fairly light skinned though).
If you meant this post, it’s Angel Haze who is black & tsalagi. I assume you meant the former though? Either way they’re very good to use as refs so long as you remember they are each one Tsalagi person and don’t necessarily reflect the diversity in the appearances of all 300k+ Tsalagi/Cherokee people!
wait people think leo was a thief?? like in canon?? no fucking way
If I’m remembering correctly, both him and Percy have been described as having features that cause lots of people to immediately assume they’re troublemakers of some kind based on appearances alone. Like teachers would automatically keep an eye on them even before they’ve done anything wrong because, based on their face, they assume they will do something wrong.
Couldn’t find all the things bc my brain’s dead but here’s some from his first ever description:
“Leo looked like a Latino Santa’s elf, with curly black hair, pointy ears, a cheerful, babyish face, and a mischievous smile that told you right away this guy should not be trusted around matches or sharp objects.”
The Lost Hero, page 5
But yeah, he’s described similarly several times, like he has a face that makes people think he’s going to do something he shouldn’t. Again, I’m pretty sure Percy is described similarly at one point, but it’s not as bad with him because Percy isn’t *canonically* a POC. Whereas with Leo it’s a little…hmmm.
Also the fact that Leo is consistently, repeatedly described like he resembles an imp/elf is…weird.
I’ve done a tiny bit of tweaking on it bc I’m a coding nerd but it’s the aeronautic theme by Magnusthemes! And thank you, I’m glad you like it 💕 I’m way too obsessed with themes tbh…
Hey! I’m korean and honestly my opinion on the whole nagini matter is conflicting. I love Claudia Kim, and I love that there’s an Asian woman (other than Cho) in hp. And in my opinion, I feel as though nagini will be much more than Voldemort’s pet snake. However, there is a lot of history behind Koreans being controlled/captured. (Especially considering the movie takes place during Japanese imperialism of Korea) there’s also the stereotype of Asian women, & voldy who brainwashed nagini (1/2)
So basically tdlr: don’t ignore the racism and ignorance behind making a korean woman a character who was captured and enslaved. But there’s no need to not support Claudia Kim-she’s one of the first korean actresses in international films and she deserves all the love in my opinion. Support her playing nagini, just not jkr making nagini a korean woman (2/2)
Yes! We should definitely be giving Claudia Kim a heckload of support! There are definitely a lot of shaky issues surrounding her role as Nagini, but that shouldn’t stop us from supporting her. Frankly, perusing through the comments on her instagram is the nicest thing because everyone is being so positive to her and that should definitely continue.
(warning: spoilers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)
(I’m going to explain the matter factually before I get into any of the problematic discourse)
Basically, the final Crimes of Grindelwald trailer just came out (you can watch it on Youtube), and in the trailer, Claudia Kim was shown transforming into a snake–specifically, Nagini, Voldemort’s beloved horcrux. On her Twitter, JK Rowling said that, no, Nagini is not an animagus, but rather something called a “maledictus,” which apparently means she has a blood curse that’s passed down female familial lines. For now, she is able to turn into a snake at will, but later she’s doomed to become stuck in the snake’s form permanently, as Nagini is in the books.
Claudia Kim has been keeping her role as Nagini a secret until the release of the trailer, but she’s now said about the role in an interview: “It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini. You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast for the character.”
From this we learn that Nagini didn’t want to become a snake; she wanted to stay human and live. (Which to me adds a whole new layer to Nagini’s role in the books; by that time Nagini was no longer self-aware and human enough to understand her terrible role under Voldemort; Nagini has now been added to my list of HP characters that are interesting to analyze)
Claudia Kim also said, “She does feel sometimes it’s not controllable. She is bound to [permanently] transform at some point to a beast so she feels this pressure that the clock is ticking.”
it’s also been revealed that Nagini is Credence’s only friend, making them a ragtag duo of human beings who have a magical curse of some sort inside them.
In regards to the choice of casting and the problematic low number of woc in Harry Potter casts, I’m white, so it’d be better if you turned to Korean fans and to Claudia Kim herself about that.
I recommend you do heavy research from Korean perspectives about it before you listen to the rumors, gossip, and bitter posts. They may have some truth to them but things are never that simple. It’s been a problem before that exotic and tragedy, even evil, roles have been given to poc, and it’s even more concerning when there aren’t many other poc in the cast; I would like to look to the hope that Kim knows what she is doing and will play Nagini as an interesting and complex character.
A common bitter remark people have made about JK Rowling relates to something she tweeted earlier, that she’s been sitting on the Nagini secret for about 20 years. A lot of people are critical about this, usually the same people who are critical about Dumbledore, but having studied JK Rowling’s writing process and planning, I actually think it’s quite likely that she had Nagini’s backstory fleshed out in the original series; though the details and how they fit into Fantastic Beasts have likely become more thorough as she’s worked on it. JK Rowling has shown before in her writing that she plans out a lot of things that she doesn’t always expect to put into text or out into the world, and considering Nagini always seemed slightly less snakelike than she should have been, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one of those things.
Really most of the issues have stemmed from the fact that the character and actress is woc, and that there are a lot of problematic things surrounding Nagini as a character that could easily turn this into bad representation for women of color.
Hi! I'm a Chinese Asian woman and I think seeing Nagini and Credence bond will be super cool! But then the only Asian character in the franchise will get to spend the rest of her life as a snake. Which is almost like killing the gays. Plus there's the whole being a pet to wizard hitler thing. The only good thing I can say about it is that Voldemort seemed to genuinely care about Nagini, and at least it's going to be hard to china doll sexualize her if she's a snake LOL
Hi! I agree, seeing those two bond will be cool. I didn’t make that correlation before, but !!! yeah, there’s a trope with POC being sacrificed or killed off in media, much like with LGBT+ characters, and I think her being forced to become a snake definitely has a similar affect, like you said.
I wouldn’t say Voldemort genuinely cared about Nagini–if he did it was certainly in a typical creepy way. But he did take care of her by feeding her, I guess, and treasured her, as awful and gross as that is?? Hopefully we’ll get to see someone else genuinely caring for her in the movies.
I sure hope she doesn’t get sexualized while she’s still human, even if they can’t really do it while she’s a snake. :P (the Hitler thing and the pet thing are both just plain messed up)
do you think Harry should've become a proffessor, or an still an auror? i'm kinda undecided on the matter
As much as I’d love to see Harry settling down to do some teaching, I’m not sure how much he’d actually enjoy it (at least in the long run). He didn’t exactly choose to teach the DA, rather, people chose HIM, as per usual, and though the same could be said for his role of fighting death eaters, I feel like he chose more in being an auror; he knew aurors who played an impactful role in his life and, under the guidance of professor McGonagall, chose the same role based on his personal strengths and interests.
He may have been a good teacher, but he never chose it. He may also not have been as bad as Ron in regards to sitting down and studying, but it still isn’t quite something he’d seek to do for the rest of his life (even the more active teaching jobs at Hogwarts requires paperwork, grading, and study). He’s a learner by experience and action, and has always enjoyed physical feats such as quidditch more than playing a part in the academic world Hermione loves.
I can see him becoming a teacher later in life, wanting to finally get some rest from fighting, but I don’t think teaching would be his first choice of profession.
I do absolutely adore the idea of him following Remus’ footsteps in being DADA teacher, though, it’s honestly a really cool concept and Harry would totally take after Remus in many parts of his teaching styles.
