Everything About Magic:The Gathering - from Dominaria and Shandalar to New Capenna and Duskmourn

So these are the common contributors the new Black Infinite Combo. Mostly Starscape/Blight-Priest/Tenacity/Conqueror but there's plenty of ways to gain life. And apparently, Standard is stuck with it for at least five years. And don't tell me you haven't seen it, Foundations has barely been out and I've seen at least a dozen times already.

Aetherdrift releases on Valentine's Day 2025. It's a set about a multiplanar race across three planes. The prize is the Aetherspark which Chandra intends to win for Nissa. Let's review the three cards that have been previewed for the set.

I really like these two cards. Earthrumbler's ability is pretty good if you don't have enough creatures to crew it or if you don't plan on bringing back a creature or artifact from your graveyard. Plus, Vigilance and Trample is just sweet. The Brood must be the insect race in the set. Brightglass Gearhulk is nice too if you want to put something small into your hand from your library. Multicolor gearhulks are a cool idea.

Aetherdrift will see the return of Daretti to a standard set. It sucks that he's yet another desparked planeswalker and that art is awful. Daretti is a known character, formerly a planeswalker. He has a distinct look and this ain't it. Whoever was the art supervisor on this, dropped the ball. As for his abilities on this card, he'll want an artifact heavy deck with expensive artifacts if you want him to have a high power level. If you have plenty of artifacts, you can sacrifice one whenever he attacks to return one in your graveyard to the battlefield. Yes, it explicitly states you must choose the artifact in your graveyard before you sacrifice an artifact to bring it back.

Let's take a look at some cards that pertain to racing in the cardname. There is no card with 'racing' in the name, though.

First, we have Reckless Racer from the set, 'Aether Revolt'. A discard/draw tool, he can help fill your graveyard with artifacts for Daretti. Having First Strike helps him stick around, too. It's not legal in Standard but is everywhere else.

However, Arms Race is legal in Standard for a little while longer since it came out in Brothers' War. Pay four to put an artifact card from your hand onto the battlefield. It'll gain haste but be sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step. Again, another way to enable Daretti as the artifacts he returns from the graveyard has no limit on mana value.

Racecourse Fury is a card from 'Return to Ravnica'. It enchants a land and that land gains an activated ability to grant a creature haste until end of turn. Sweet. Legal in Pioneer but not Explorer which kind of sucks. Racers' Ring came out with 'Streets of New Capenna'. It enters tapped, let's you tap it for red or green, and you can pay four to sacrifice it and draw a card.

And finally, here we have two vehicles with Racer in the cardname. Flywheel Racer was released in March of the Machine so it is currently Standard legal. Filigree Racer was printed in a Modern Horizons 3 Commander deck. They're both good to have around. Both are only crewed with 1 power. I wonder if Energy will return in Aetherdrift, though.

There you have it. As you can see, 'racing' is mostly in red at the moment. It'll be interesting to see what Aetherdrift has in store for other colors.

ok but wHY DIDN’T GLINDA GO WITH ELPHABA?? Why didn’t she get on the broom??? WHY would the musical reverse the roles?????

It really bothers me that they changed it. They made Glinda refuse to go with Elphie in favor of satisfying her vanity??? IN WHAT WORLD would Glinda Upland refuse (refuse!) to go??? Book Glinda wouldn’t have wasted a minute! This woman was head over heels in love with her best friend and would have followed her to the end of the world if she had asked her to!! Just like Elphaba (once was) Glinda was devoted to her. Devoted.

So erasing that from her character is really disrespectful to Glinda, because what the musical really did, was: purposely ignore the deep feeling of (romantic) love/devotion she felt for Elphie, in favor of potraying her as a vain, self-centered ditz

I totally get where you’re coming from but the way I managed to get peace with this is that Glinda actually does want to go with her, both in the book and the musical. But the reason she doesn’t step on that broom is the same reason she doesn’t get out of the carriage: Glinda cannot do impulsive like Elphaba can.

In both the book and musical Elphaba catches her off guard. Had Elphaba given her an hour in advance, even the slightest indication of her plan beforehand, Glinda would’ve had time to think and shed all her anxieties and doubts and gone along with Elphaba.

Glinda doesn’t go with Elphaba not because she doesn’t want to - because by god does she want to. She doesn’t go because Glinda doesn’t jump unless she knows where she will land.

Obviously, she instantly regrets it. I mean, Thank Goodness is pretty much Glinda going “welp I chose this path so here I stay. fuck me I guess.”

Glinda’s devotion to Elphaba is so strong even in the musical. God, she sees her best friend die right in front of her eyes, and yet she still treasures Elphaba’s last wish, even though it makes her so goddamn miserable to smile along as the Ozians celebrate Elphaba’s death.

No matter how hetero-washed the musical became, even through straight-goggles the writers couldn’t erase Glinda’s longlife dedication and devotion and love for Elphaba and if that isn’t the gayest thing I’ve ever witnessed with my own two queer eyes I don’t know what is.

My opinion, but waking up to this means...

Those of us in the U.K and Europe need to get our shit sorted very quickly before Trump takes office again. America can no longer be treated as a reliable ally in defense or trade. Even if Trump dies in office or is ousted in the next election this constant about face isn't something that a firm alliance can be built on.

Yeah we're on our own. And Trump will probably feed our and Ukrainian intel to putin, too. If not him then his best friend Elon.

To people in other countries. This could be you. Stop the rise of far right parties in your countries, stop Russian interference and crack down on misinformation and disinformation. Or what happened in the US today could happen to you too. Don't let the fascism spread.

And build up your militaries so you aren't reliant on others for defense.

Thankfully, this will be Trump's last term as President, any one person can only have two terms whether they're consecutive or not. He'll be out of office in four years unless he attempts another January 6th.

Haunting the Halls

Marina feels like she's stuck in a dream.

She didn't use to dream, she knows this. Her nights were once an escape from all the issues in her life, sweet oblivion for a time before they came back with the rise of a new day.

But now... it is almost like all those issues are gone.

In their place, she now freely wanders the halls of her house. She hears her father playing the piano in the living room and smells her mother's cooking coming from the kitchen, but their presence is distant. Never do they tell her to go to school or, worse, ask how it's going.

So she's content to explore the hallways of her house, always finding a new room, a new curiosity.

(Was the house always so big, that she could forget the number of rooms within? Surely, for if it wasn't she wouldn't be exploring. Houses don't just grow extra rooms.)

Sometimes she finds some places better left unexplored. A room whose door crackles with heat, a hallways with darkness far too ominous. But that's how exploration is supposed to go, is it not?

(Is it? Is her house not supposed to be safe? Maybe she should tell her parents?)

And then, on rare occasions, it is like her endless dream turns into the worst of nightmares: the wallpaper around her tears apart and the wood under them rots away, she hears monsters whispering just outside her sight and all lights turn off. Strange people, their clothes torn and their faces gaunt, sometimes pass by her running from something unspeakable she never sees. Sometimes they even try to drag her along with them.

(In the nightmare she remembers her crime. Remembers giving her classmates to the demon in her basement. Is this her punishment?)

Surrounded by horror, she always does the same thing: she curls up in a corner and cries. Cries for her help, for her parents, for her friend Valgavoth.

Valgavoth always comes.

(Why don't her parents? Can't they hear her? Did they leave the house when she wasn't looking?)

Val is always there, comforting her. He tells her that he would never let anything harm her. He sings her sweet lullabies and assures her that all she needs to do is go to sleep, that when she next wakes up all of the horrors will be gone.

She always does, and wakes up to new dreams.

(Is this her fault? Is she the one that made the horrors that now haunt her?

In the smallest, most hidden recesses of her mind she wonders if Val is truly her friend, is actually keeping her safe…Or if is she's just a cherry on top of the cake, being saved for his final meal.)

reblogged

I’ve always felt the core role of this blog has been one of information. We make a lot of choices in design, and I try to use my various communications, including Blogatog, to walk the players through what we were thinking when we made key decisions.

The challenge with this approach is that it’s very logic-focused. It uses intellectual justifications to explain actions. But the problems I’m often responding to are emotional in origin. I have a good friend who’s a psychologist. He refers to this (using the words of author Robyn Gobbel) as an owl brain solution to a watchdog brain problem.

When someone is hurting, hearing about why the thing that is causing them pain is the result of intellectual decisions falls flat. That’s what has been causing some tension lately here on Blogatog.

It’s clear that for some Question Marks changes over the last few years represent the loss of something key to what makes Magic special to them. To them, the game is losing its heart.

While I can’t necessarily do anything about that, I want to better understand what you’re going through. So I’m using this post to ask players who are concerned with the recent changes to help me understand their feelings. Let me hear your stories about how your lives have been affected by these changes.

The thing is, you knew this would be happening practically from the get go. Universes Beyond is only four years old. You guys work on designing a set two to four years before it's released. The reason behind this decision wasn't something you found was happening through any kind of data. This was the plan all along. To try to say otherwise is disingenuous and disrespectful to the already established playerbase, the enfranchised players. You basically decided to do this after what? One or two UB sets were rolled out? Come on, be honest, or did you also sign a NDA to not speak the truth on how you feel?
