Voltage illustration and writing contest friendly warning

So, were you looking forward to voltage’s 2014 art and writing contest? You can basically win 5000 dollars or one of the three runner-up prizes.  Here it is: http://www.voltage.co.jp/koiapp-award2014/en/

Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? But there’s something odd when you look at last year’s winners: http://www.voltage.co.jp/koigame-award2013/en/winner2.html

What’s that, the first prize winner is ignored and not given out because works weren’t good enough?

I can’t read Japanese so I don’t know for sure, but it sure looks like there is no first place winner and only three runner ups again. So yeah, if you wanted to enter; ok! But please keep in mind you’re probably going for max 1000 dollars if you’re lucky (which isn’t the amount you get after taxes, mind you).

Lol, I totally missed it the first time, but when you look at the 2013 winners, they mention “Unfortunately, the Grand Prize for the Illustration Category was not given out for two consecutive years.”

Yup.

I don’t know the exact rules or their grading/voting procedure within the company (perhaps if the Japanese staff aren’t impressed enough they don’t roll out that much cash) but it is a little sad/strange. I wonder if it clearly states in the rules that there MAY NOT BE a grand prize recipient if their voting doesn’t reach a high enough level??? Wonder if anyone has tried asking at their AnimeExpo booth this year…

That is a very good point! Culturally even contests like this can be handled and treated very differently between countries, where in the US it's a given "someone has to win" the main prize, so there is bound to be some "lost in translation" cultural expectations both in awarding prizes and how they vote/rank the winners. This reminds me... I first started mine in January (holy wha! It's only been  half a year!?) Amazing how time flies, though in my case I had expected to have been much longer already AHAHA;;;

Hello! It’s been a while since my last check-in regarding the stats of Otome Jikan. The site has been growing steadily since we first launched in January. Right now, the site gets about 3,000 visits a day and if you all remember, I’ve had to upgrade OJ to premium hosting in order to keep up with all the traffic, too.

Today, the site costs $100 a month for hosting plus the $10 annual fee for keeping the domain name. (so that’s $1210 a year) I’ve been paying for that out of pocket since the site started, but I think now is a good time to finally start accepting donations to help keep the site up. Everyone’s had a chance by now to see what kind of website this is, so you know exactly that you’re paying to support.

To that end, we are starting our first donation drive for Otome Jikan! All money received will go towards hosting costs and possible future upgrades for the site, which we’ll need if viewership keeps going up.

If you’d like to donate (any amount) to OJ, please go here. This is the most efficient way for us to have donations since Gumroad takes a much lower cut of the money and is more user-friendly. However, if you have trouble using Gumroad, we’re willing to accomodate you via Amazon Payments or PayPal if you email us at [email protected]. This goes for both donations and raffle ticket purchases. Speaking of raffle tickets…

This month, we’re also holding a donations raffle!
