Jenna's gran, and her love of touching Jenna's costars' hair

In a 2012 interview for CNN, Jenna talked about how her grandma would certainly touch Matt Smith's hair:

What did your grandmother say when she learned you got this role? I auditioned for Amy’s best mate in it, and was pretty close to getting the part, and my grandma was absolutely devastated I didn’t. So, we came back around, and I don’t think she can believe it, actually. It is quite surreal for her, and she’s quite looking forward to meeting Matt. What do you anticipate that encounter being like? My grandma’s going to mess up his hair. She’s going to be patting him and hugging him, and Matt’s going to have really messy hair for the rest of the night.

And recently, while promoting Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons with Aidan Turner, Jenna mentioned the story of how her gran touched Aidan's hair while they were at Wimbledon a few years earlier:

A lighter story compared with their most recent TV appearances, Lemons marks the first time the two have performed together, although they had encountered each other a handful of times before. “My grandma met you at Wimbledon,” Coleman reminds Turner. “We got sat together for sandwiches between sets. My grandma was like: ‘Look at his hair!’ I think she went to touch it.” Coleman slaps an imaginary wrist away. “‘You can’t touch Aidan’s hair!’”

Jenna Coleman will be attending the Dallas Fan Festival comic con on October 15th and 16th!

Tom Sturridge, Mason Alexander Park, and Matt Smith will also be attending! And Jenna Coleman will have phot-ops with all of them!

You an buy tickets for the comic con, for the phot ops, or for signatures here:

But it does seem strange that the description for Jenna never mentions Sandman, and appears to be several years old. But they do use the Johanna Constantine promotional image.

Parallels between Johanna Constantine in The Sandman, and Clara Oswald in Doctor Who

Some more parallels:

Johanna / Clara is told about Morpheus / the Doctor before they first meet them by a mad, immortal woman.

Morpheus / The Doctor has previously met a very similar character in the past, who has a very similar name, who is also played by Jenna Coleman.

A lot of the story revolves around Johanna's / Clara's relationship with their girlfriend / boyfriend, how they die, how that affects Johanna / Clara, and how she can subsequently teach Morpheus / the Doctor an important lesson.

Johanna and Clara are bi.

Johanna & Morpheus, and Clara & the Doctor are equals to each other, and interact in that way as well.

Both Lady Johanna and Clara are involved in the story of Orpheus. In the Sandman (in later comics), Lady Johanna Constantine saves Orpheus from the French Revolution, and is ultimately buried on the island of Orpheus. As concerns Clara, Face the Raven / Heaven Sent / Hell Bent is pretty much the Doctor Who rendition of the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice.

Can you think of any others?

New interview with Jenna Coleman about her roles in The Sandman and Doctor Who, for Best magazine.

Some key parts of the interview include:

Q: What can you tell us about your character?

JC: So, I play Johanna Constantine, who is very much a kind of upgraded version of the character in the comic. Johanna basically works as an exorcist to the royal family. She's this very tough, cynical detective for hire, who also has a side to her that makes her something of a tortured warrior. She's very guarded and cautious of people, which really comes to into play when she meets Dream, played by Tom Sturridge, who's amazing.

Q: What was it like, working on this during the pandemic?

JC: It worked - with a LOT of Zoom calls! It's weird, because a lot of us on the cast never met, but that's also what comes with the anthology nature of the show.

Q: How did this sci-fi series compare to your time on Doctor Who?

JC: It's very different. It's unique. Working on something like this is almost like theatre - the sense that there are absolutely no creative boundaries. It's so layered and complex, and I absolutely love all the humour with it.

Q: What do fans recognise you for the most?

JC: Clara. Definitely. It's usually, 'Oh, it's Clara from Doctor Who!'

Q: Would you ever go back [to Doctor Who], do you think?

JC: It could happen in the future, who knows? I think, at least for a good while, Clara is probably broken down somewhere in time and space, trying to understand how to work a TARDIS! But I had an incredible three series on Doctor Who. I took away so much from my time working with Peter [Capaldi], Matt [Smith] and the rest of the cast and crew on something so loved and revered. It was such a special time in my life.

Q: Do you love or hate watching your own performances on screen?

JC: I do find watching myself hard! Something like this [The Sandman] is easier to watch because she's so unlike me. Clara was a little too like me to watch. Generally, I can't watch anything unless the character is somewhat removed from what I really am.

Q: If you weren't an actress, what career could you imagine pursuing

JC: Oh, well when I was really, really little I wanted to be an archaeologist, just because we did a whole thing about Egypt at school. Other than that, I like to think something still creative. Whether it be a photographer, or perhaps a writer. I always used to say a casting director because I would get to read lots of films, and I love watching other actors.
