This is what I originally wanted to post but I had saved the clips where I didn't find them right away 🙃 I love these intimate clips, it just feels like you are right there with them.
The Robin fall bathing championships have started, and there is a lot of competition at even the smallest waterhole. I love watching them, they are so competitive!
The bathing quandaries of a Hermit Thrush… A lovely fall migration visitor. Too bad that the lens was splashed but thankfully he was aware and jumped right in front 😁 I love these cinnamony cuties! I only see them very rarely.
Sunday is as good as any day to watch a bird bathe, and Robins are one of the best at that. When I am editing these videos, I am often surprised how much bird movements are in tune with music. It worked so well here, I wished the video was longer. I should start a compilation video…
After some good breakfast and wing practice, the first Robin baby has left the nest an hour ago. Robins cannot fly properly when they fledge, so the young ones follow the parents around by foot for a couple of days, learning how to feed and survive. I am not sure if the other two will follow today but they might. You can watch on my website or on my Birdsy channel on https://birdsy.com/c/Ostdrossel3
Momma Robin is spending another night in the nest. It is getting full now. I am livestreaming this cam on my website :)
They nurture, they nourish, they care and love - they deserve our respect, appreciation and love every day but a little extra today. A Happy Mother's Day to all mothers and mother figures. Thank you for all you do, we are so lucky to have you ❤️
Robins are funny in that they cannot seem to stay away from a good bath opportunity. However, this bath is still a bit winterized with the stick and rocks, which made it hard for the bird to find a good spot. Always worth a try though 😆 Happy Tuesday!
Happy Women's Day
to all the wonderful ladies out there! I don’t know what the world would be like without women, and I am happy to be one myself. The weather is murky today, but here are some Robin photos to brighten the mood. Female Robins have a lighter head cap, more grey than black, whereas the males darker head colors are black. I think this one here is a male. The Robins have steadily started to reclaim their territory here, and it is awesome to hear their song echo across the yard in the evenings and mornings. Have a lovely day and weekend!
Look who was back today, just in time for the Great Backyard Bird Count! A group of Robins 😍
Nesting news: All tucked in
The bird moms are ready for the night. The Robin baby is doing fine, and both Chickadee and Bluebird are still incubating. I love watching them in the evenings, they certainly do look cozy. And with so many birds nesting, feeder activity has slowed down a bit. Which is nice for the bird food budget.
The Robins are hatching! You can watch live on my Birdsy channel here.
The Robins have three eggs now, and since the female did not lay another today, I am assuming that the clutch is complete. It is very interesting to watch them do their thing in the apple tree. The female sits on the nest most of the day, turning the eggs to incubate them evenly. Whenever she leaves, the male stands guard on the edge of the nest.
Edit to add - we now have a fourth egg!
Hip hip hoorah! We have a Robin egg. And I think the Chickadee laid her first one this morning as well. I added the Wren guard to the chickie box and they accepted it right away. Now both females will lay an egg per day until they are done, and then they will start incubating. The Robin cam is now live on my website and birdsy.com.
Today I spotted a Robin nest in one of the apple trees. It looked fresh and had no eggs in it so I decided to take a chance and put a Birdsy camera there. It was so cute to see the bird sing while in the nest.
Despite some more frosty temperatures,
the backyard has truly started to transform, and one of my favorite things in spring is when the fruit trees and the Serviceberry begin to bloom. The latter is a little early this year, it usually starts in May. Yesterday was beautifully sunny, a perfect occasion for happy spring portraits. The Hummingbirds, Orioles and Grosbeaks should start arriving soon as well, and milder weather is on the horizon. Finally!
