Flights of Fancy

Sometimes I just make stuff.

Painted another space rift box! Got some sparkly black felt and a resin star dragon on the inside. :)

It’s on Etsy with free shipping, though only inside the US. Shipping outside tends to get very expensive and I didn’t want to price it high enough to cover all eventualities for that.

Steampunky treasure box - purple and gold.

The interior is purple felt; something about the daylight made it appear far more blue in the photo. Otherwise it’s just some cool stuff - textured ribbon, gear and clock face buttons, an old metal key and beads - on a small wooden chest.

I’ll be taking this to an Artist Market this month. If it doesn’t sell there, I’ll probably put it on Etsy.

I painted another book box, this time with space themes. The sides are in metallic silver, and I put snaps on the front/top of the box to help keep it securely closed - an extra measure better than the little magnet built in. Star studs decorate the ends of the straps. There’s also black glittery felt lining the inside for the sake of rolling dice or cushioning jewelry or other little knickknacks.

I’d like to put this on my Etsy, but I’d need to find a good shipping box for it so I can put in accurate dimensions for said shipping. I should probably also try to find a better place to take photos so that it doesn’t pick up as much surrounding color - all the green tinted it a little bit in the photos, and the spine doesn’t have any warm brown or other colors - that’s pure bounce light.

My Monster Box!

I love it so much. It came out so cute. I want to make more and see if I can sell them because there were a few other places I test-positioned those googly eyes and each one had a different kind of cute about it.

Also, the box itself I treated with a mother-of-pearl acrylic medium I found recently and it is shiny. You can go from a greenish-black to a vivid, brilliant iridescent purple depending on the angle at which light is hitting it and reflecting off. I’ve got to use that stuff on more projects and paintings.

Another box! I liked the treasure chest look and had some fun decorating the top of it with preserved moss, faux flowers, wooden beads, acrylic gems, and an antique key. Lined the inside with green felt, which I think showed up in the picture a little darker than in reality.

Another box! This is the last of the set of three I got to do up and decorate recently - one for myself, and two to put on Etsy in case someone else would like them. I had fun.

And now, the blurb:

Painted a warm brown color with metallic gold detailing, this wooden box is lined with green felt and features a functional clasp and handle on the front. It holds about three to four sets of standard gaming dice, or else a small assortment of trinkets, craft supplies such as beads or pendants, or finished jewelry.

The interior (base) measures approximately 4″ by 2.25″ by 1.25″, with an additional 0.5″ head room in the lid (not lined).

The exterior of the box is approximately 6.25″ by 3.5″ by 2.5″.

A one-of-a-kind, hand-painted treasure box!

Painted and decorated to resemble a carved stone box re-discovered after being lost for years in the forest, this wooden box is lined with grey felt and features a faux decorative gem and a functional hook clasp. It’s great for holding dice, jewelry, small craft items and little keepsakes, making it useful as well as decorative. This could be a wonderful gift for a fantasy-loving Game or Dungeon Master or for someone who loves their nature-themed jewelry.

The interior (base) measures approximately 3.5″ by 3.25″ by 2″, with an additional 1″ head room in the lid (not lined).

The exterior of the box is approximately 4″ by 4″ by 3.5″, not including the extra fractions granted by the hook clasp, faux gem, or mossy dimensional paint.

I decorated myself a D&D book box, and I wanted to share the result!

Mostly this is wood, with some scale-patterned fake leather - the kind you buy off a bolt from a fabric store - paint, felt, charms and decorative nail studs. It holds my campaign notebooks and dice and on the inside lid I attached two clips to hold further index card or postit notes - like a list of verbal components for one character’s spells because I decided to have some fun there, for instance. Also, lots of hot glue.

It’s not a perfect work. The edges of the leather are kind of obvious on the sides, and thanks to the temperatures this time of year the spray paint on the leather experienced some blocking. I think, I hope, that I managed to contain it with multiple layers of varnish and gloss.

Still, I like it for myself, and I was pleasantly surprised by how easily I could cut through the material to make the cutout dragon shape in the center of the cover.
