Finally revealing my Unpopular Opinion:
I had been feeling bad about it, but now that I know I'm not the only one who thinks it, I'm not afraid to say it. Tim Burton's movies have been a huge letdown recently. Corpse Bride was the last time I ENJOYED his work! Alice in Wonderland was probably the greatest letdown I've ever HAD from Disney or Tim Burton, for numerous reasons! At least I KNEW Dark Shadows was going to bomb big-time. THAT'S why, when everyone asks "Oh, you'll probably see Frankenweenie, right?", I replied with nothing but a resounding "NO," simply because I don't want to waste my time and money on something I knew would be less than satisfying.
"Both films are being sold as Halloween treats, but Frankenweenie is the rotten apple. It represents the excesses of Burton’s success (especially after his brutally unimaginative Alice in Wonderland). Burton seems to have lost that sense of humorous whimsy which turned his early work about lonely, eccentric, death-haunted boys into satires on both normalcy and sappiness." --'Frankenweenie vs Paranorman' from CityArts.info
After seeing the wonder that is Paranorman, I HIGHLY doubt Frankenweenie could live up to its sheer greatness. But everyone would likely have thought the exact opposite. The problem is, I don't know if Tim Burton is losing his touch, or I'm somehow growing out of that semi-gothic, black-and-white, "creepy is cool" phase. I never THOUGHT it was a phase, but I don't want to think that Tim Burton isn't going to create anything as great as he's already made in the past, either!
:(
"The light has gone out in his recent films, and this big-budget Frankenweenie loses any sense of innocence."
