PLEASE watch Sarah Z’s Onceler Video

DON’T WORRY. Its not super ridiculing or #cringeculture about the Lorax fandom, nor is it forgiving of some of the…uglier sides of it. It’s a great deconstruction of the “emoboy”villain (or “tumblr boi as I call it) archetype as well as an analysis of the Onceler phenomenon in general!

Let’s all be real here. Just like Sarah says in the video, no one really liked the Lorax 2012 movie. We liked what we could do with it and the fandoms it inspired, but even among Illumination film circles it doesn’t get much love and is sort of the Bee Movie of that studio (YOUGREEDYDIRTBAG).

The portrayal of the Onceler in the 2012 film had a lot of stuff going on, so even if he wasn’t really all that interesting himself there was a lot different things people could pick apart and like about him conceptually. Whether it was the rapid character switch due to bad writing, his quirkiness, the fact that he tries to get along with the Lorax and even tries to just harvest the tufts of the Truffula trees first, there was a lot about him that would make for much better fanfic material than it did finished film. (seriously the fanfics I found for Lorax 2012 were so much better than the actual film like homahgawd)

As for the “Onceler” archetype in character design n such;

I’m so happy she addressed that these characters are either white or when humanized are usually white. THANK YOU!!!!

For that matter the beauty and the beast/angel+devil shipping dynamics are always full of really pastey people or humanizations too.

Outside of humanizations whom I can’t picture as white (Toffee from Star vs/King Dice from Cuphead) the only black-canonically-human Tumblr Boi off the top of my head is Dr. Facilier from Princess and the Frog. Maybe Lewis from Mystery Skulls too. 

Can you guys fill me in on any non-white tumblr bois out there?

Coming from somebody who was in the onceler fandom since the beginning, I can say from experience that it was never that bad. Yeah, it may have been a bit odd at times, and there were people who did get out of hand, but for the most part I had some fun times and most of the people that I’m friends with today I met from being in the fandom.

I just never really got why Tumblr makes this huge deal about the fandom being weird when there are even worse trends on this site.

The 40th Annual Annie Awards very recently took place on the 2nd of this month, and what with the Oscars coming up at the end of February, not to mention the one year anniversary of our fandom, the Once-ler/Lorax fandom, fast approaching (March 2), it got me thinking….

What if we had our own little awards show?

I used to be a moderator of a website called Pixar Planet, and every year we would hold a little awards ceremony, giving members of the forum boards a chance to vote on such things as their favorite art piece, who they thought was the funniest member, which person was most likely to get a job at Pixar, etc. They still do this and it’s always been kind of a fun way to highlight folks and creative works. Why not do the same thing here? The categories would have to fit the fandom, of course — stuff like this:

• Best Ask Blog (with subcategories: Once-ler [popular and lesser-known], Ted, Audrey, Lorax, Other) • Best Artist (with subcategories: most original/creative, cutest style, etc.) • Best Art Piece (with subcategories: Once-ler [2012 movie version; ask blog version], Norma, Normaler and other pairings, Lorax, etc.) • Best Fandom Blog (that’s not an ask blog) • Best Fan Fiction Piece • Best Music Video • Funniest Member • Most Contributive Member

Other categories and/or subcategories could be added onto these. I’d be happy to host the awards, as well as send out posts, one at a time, for each category for you all to vote in. For example, I’d post up “Voting Post for Best Fandom Blog” and everyone would reblog it (or comment on it) with their vote. Each post like this would circulate for a few days and then it would go onto the next category, and so on and so forth. As for a date of the official awards, that could be decided by everyone. Perhaps the fandom’s anniversary? It would be appropriate. I thought it might be called the “Oncie Awards”, ‘cause all other awards shows out there have similar names (Tonnies, Annies, Grammies, etc.), but it’s open to debate.

Okay, Guys!

I thought I’d make a post about this as early as possible, considering I have to have this whole thing together in 10 days.

I‘m creating a project. An art piece. An open-ended assignment that I’ve decided to make about YOU. Yes, and by YOU, I mean everyone and anyone in the Once-ler (or Lorax!) Fandom. 

As I continue to weed out what the physical manifestation of this will actually be, I may ask for your help with other things. But for now, I’m envisioning doing something involving photos of you bunch. THAT SAID, I may trash this idea entirely. If I get more than say, three photos from people, though, I’ll definitely find a way to weave your images into the final product.

What I’m interested in seeing would be!:

Be creative! And have as much fun with this as you can. If I could get a whole bunch of you guys doing your thing that would bring tears to my eyes.

I want to show you to the world. Proudly. If you would like to know more details on my project and be updated on my plans for it as they evolve (AKA how I might use your images!) don’t be afraid to hit up my ask box.

Something I would like to emphasize here real quick is that if you run an ASK BLOG yourself, I would love it if you showed that in some way in your photo, as that is something I’m particularly interested in here.
