This scene is painfully beautiful. The struggle you can see in Stefan’s eyes, the inner conflict to bring that barrier down, that he thought he had built up so strong now and so high. The barrier he had built in the deepest depths of his darkness, in overwhelming guilt, in pain, in loss, in hatred for himself; but above all, in protection of Elena, from all the Evil that awaits her and from now… himself. He has sacrificed it all; his home, his life, the person he loves  more then anything in the world. What’s beautiful, is for that split moment, you can see him cripple; those walls for a brief moment crumble. The desperation in his eyes surfacing; the strong want to come home, to her; his light, his comfort, his happiness. The desperate wish that things could be different. In her arms, everything else seems to fade away. In the last gif, he takes in that moment, the feeling of his home. Because he knows this is, this has to be, his goodbye.
