“There are two languages in Brazil. The one we write (and which is called “Portuguese”), and another one that we speak (which is so despised that there is not a name to call it). The latter is the mother tongue of Brazilians, the former has to be learned in school, and a majority of population does not manage to master it appropriately…. Personally, I do not object to us writing Portuguese, but I think it is important to make clear that Portuguese is (at least in Brazil) only a written language. Our mother tongue is not Portuguese, but Brazilian Vernacular. This is not a slogan, nor a political statement, it is simply recognition of a fact…. There are linguistic teams working hard in order to give the full description of the structure of the Vernacular. So, there are hopes, that within some years, we will have appropriate grammars of our mother tongue, the language that has been ignored, denied and despised for such a long time.”

Happy 104th Birthday Maria do Carmo "Carmen" Miranda da Cunha                         └ February 9, 1909 --- August 5, 1955

The poor girl grew up in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro downtown, and had become by 1930 the prime Brazilian music star, leaving behind a life marked by jobs as a shop clerk. In that decade, her path was luminous and with no parallel. Broadway, Hollywood and international fame would come later. By 1946, The Brazilian Bombshell would earn more than any other performer in Hollywood, provoke mafia people, make fun of movie industry executives, challenge racists and drive madly around Los Angeles. The girl who once said she wanted to be very rich to make her boyfriend a prince, had become a princess herself.

Today In Latin American History

On August 24, 1954, Brazilian president Getúlio Vargas died after shooting himself in the chest inside the Palácio do Catete, the country’s former presidential residence in Rio de Janeiro. His last words were “Serenely, I take my first step on the road to eternity and I leave life to enter history.” Vargas had initially come to power following a coup in 1930 before returning to the presidency after being elected to office in 1951.

The newspaper says “The president has fulfilled his word: ‘Only dead will I leave Catete [the presidential residence]’.”
