hello hello! as promised, i’ve completed my gargantuan ronance fic rec list full of works i think are either: a) hella underrated or b) deserve all the love they’ve received and then some! :D i hope you guys enjoy:
- ti amo, je t’aime, te amo by inhobbok → this was actually the very first fic i read about three years ago and i credit it for single-handedly getting me into ronance! once i read this, i was obsessed with the idea of them. its a very sweet slow burn with miscommunication and the small-town energy of hawkins captured perfectly. also has such a great steve-robin dynamic on the side! truly a ronance staple in my eyes <3
- Romance in Hawkins (series) by eech → SO. GODDAMN. GOOD. this series is one big love letter to nancy’s character and although it is uncomplete i still re-read it shamelessly. its such an in-depth fic on nancy’s own faults and strengths as a person as well as how she begins to overcome the emotional barries she’s made for herself. it also has equally great writing for the ensemble - the dialogue is great and the characters feel very true to themselves. basically one big story about nancy overcoming her adolescent struggles and going on a road-trip with the gang + her (eventual) gf robin!
- and i am not like nancy wheeler by cowardnthief → this is a super underrated fic! its a very lighthearted slowburn and follows along robin’s perspective as she tries and fails to recommend various films to nancy at the viedeo store and, subsequently, attempts to overcome her own presumptions about her. robin is such a sweetheart in this and gives off total golden retriever vibes. it only has two chapters and six-hundred hits right now but deserves a lot more in my opinion!
- we’ll deal with the aftermath by cityseeker → suchhh a good interpretation of ronance during s4. i adored the initial angst and the defensiveness/fear on both robin and nancy’s ends as they navigated their difficult feelings for one another. PLEASE do check out cityseeker’s other works as well, everything they write is absolutely amazing (especially their caitvi if any of you like them as well!)
- nothing sacred / all things wild by sevensided (stonedlennon) → please. please please please go read this. it is so underrated. i adore this fic and actually lost it for a long while until recently finding it again. it has such an interesting concept and explores nancy’s trauma in this alternate universe in a very raw, yet also tantalizing way with robin as the therapist unraveling her. i wont reveal too much about the premise itself but check it out if you enjoy slow-building sexual tension and SUCH a good inner voice for nancy wheeler. i mean seriously this fic is just [chefs kiss]
- friends don’t yearn like we do. by oaseas → a very enjoyable one-off fic that was so very wonderful for many tiny reasons. i loved the steve-nancy dynamic, ronance getting drunk together, and more then anything else - i loved how human this fic felt. it was very down to earth and you can tell how much care the writer put into this work. its also sickly sweet, with nancy just being so undeniably infatuated with robin. overall such a cute quick read :)
- i’m your problem child, you’re a matter of fact by fyrewalk → GUYS YOU GOTTA READ THIS IF YOU ARE A LESBIAN! this is a wonderful homage to what it means to be lesbian and it portrays the continuous isolation and anger of being lesbian in a hetero-centric world so well. it really sort of hit me in waves while reading this and pinned down the lesbian experience from robin’s pov as she navigates her teenage life impeccably. this author also has such a fascinating take on robin’s relationship to her mother and to all others around her, including even steve. robin and nancy’s relationship is such a powerful one in this because of how profound the writing is. overall one of the works i’ve come to enjoy most on this list
and because i was urged to do this:
- teach me how to love (like real people do) by iiruwu → this is extremely embarrasing but i thought i might as well since anon told me to post my own fic yesterday afjskkfjks. i am actually very proud of this fic in particular thus far! it is currently at four chapters and explores nancy’s old (plus new) trauma while she is stuck in the upside-down with robin, taking place during post s4 vol 1. many things are tackled in this, from nancy’s survivor’s guilt over barb’s death to her ptsd flashbacks during season one with the demogorgan and more. overall a super slowburn with robin helping nancy heal from trauma and nancy helping robin learn to love who she is.
anddddd that is all! these are just the few that have stood out to me most in my few years floating through the ronance tag. obviously i dont have all the time in the world so i might have missed a few masterpieces/underrated fics during the last few months when the tag exploded. i’ll also be tagging those who requested this in my comments/rts below! may the ronance tag continue to flourish :)
