Anime Gender Ratio of Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Anime Gender Ratio of Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Male Characters: 168 (roughly)
Female Characters: 42 (including even the minor ones)
That’s what? One to four? Every female character therefore has a harem. Except they don’t. Because five are married, seven if we include mothers who didn’t marry the fathers of their children - and for four of them we never SEE that husband.
Which brings us to, roughly, one to five. Bigger harems, right? Wrong. One of the female characters is five years old, and another is ten, maybe twelve… when we hit the Ten Years Later Arc. Let’s not move into pedo territory. Another female character is kinda-sorta in a serious defacto relationship (and due to a curse, they’re both ‘babies’ and can’t do a damn thing with it). A fourth is in a completely dependent relationship, or she literally dies (poor Chrome, missing vital organs), but he only has to commit his mist powers.
We’re still in the roughly one-to-five area though…Now factor in that, actually, SEVENTEEN of these females seem to be manga exclusive, and at least ten of those are (possibly deliberately) badly drawn and likely only exist for a couple of chapters as VERY minor characters.
One female to twelve. Shot up, didn’t it? I admit that I’m rounding, because there are some husbands/brothers/grandpas among all the men, but being old or a sibling to one of the girls doesn’t take a guy out of the running for the others.
Of the fourteen remaining, there are still 3 that are 'game only’.
Three are definitive enemies, and three are acceptable but side-lined characters that aren’t explored much, and two are, I’m pretty sure, actually cyborgs and not really human at all…
Three romantically unattached female characters (that are over five years old) that actually get something approaching as much screen-time as the guys, that have their characters even vaguely explored - because, often as not, they’re just sitting/standing there, part of the group but NOT DOING ANYTHING!
Please note next that one of these three is “in love with” (and I mean in the unhealthy way, because the way she starts out… yeah, no.) the hero of the show, and the second is said hero’s long-time crush.
So, they’re unavailable as well!
Which just leaves the woman who caught a plane from Italy to Japan as she stalks a guy, who violently poisons people she doesn’t like, and accidentally poisons everyone else because that’s the only way she knows how to cook. Because she’s an ‘assassin’.
So, no women left. At all.
By default, we must then turn to pairing up the men with each other. Now, I’m not going to do the same somewhat-detailed analysis of the male side of things, but that’s because even the villains in this have a good-sized fanbase. Still, if we take the approximate ratio of minor, manga-only, and game-only characters, and transfer across to the men….
Twenty of forty-two… Eighty of one-sixty-eight.
That still leaves eighty-eight men. Okay, let’s take out the same number of married/dead/cursed-to-unavailability/under-five men. Number for number, rather than ratio, because this is much more of a one-for-one thing.
There are still SEVENTY-SEVEN SINGLE MEN!
And, I reiterate, NO VIABLE WOMEN LEFT.
Okay… Okay, how about we take out the ‘minor’ and ‘sidelined’ characters? By Ratio, because with these, that will work. Females: five (I’m including the cyborgs) out of forty-two. Males… it’s about 20.
You know, I was maybe a little generous about the ‘dead’ ones… I’ll round the number down to an even fifty.
That’s still fifty characters without a female option.
No wonder the fandom is rife with gay pairings. I mean, the fandom can feed off not a whole lot to get a viable character, so even adding back in the sidelined females, there’s only six that can maybe go anywhere, really. Unless you feel like exploring the married/de facto/dependent ones as well.
Which still aren’t enough to go around.
I have nothing against same-sex pairings, but all the same, I would like to point out that, seriously, the lack of gender equality and balance in sympathetic characters! I’m also going to point out that, apart from the ‘bad guy’ females, most of what the ‘good guy’ females do is STAY HOME AND COOK!!! IN AN ANIME WHERE THEY ARE INVOLVED IN THE MAFIA! ALL THE TIME FIGHTING!
I get it, I do. I did a tiny bit of research on Mafia for a fanfic I’m doing of Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Men went out and did the Manly thing of protecting their families - sometimes leaving their families at crucial times to do so. Women stayed home and were protected - generally while being kept oblivious to what their menfolk were up to.
I’m also going to stick this in my blog, but that gets posted on Sundays, so… yeah.
