I find it funny how Mary Lou is all “I have a reputation in this sport!!” because idk about you but I’d much rather be remembered as the one who has some beef with USAG but who spoke out against the abuse happening and sided with the victims than that overrated lady who tried to stop a sexual abuse bill

Tried to stop a bill that would criminalize athletic organizations like USAG for failing to report sexual abuse to authorities:

“The federation has had no shame, either. When the sex abuse bill was introduced, Penny and others from U.S.A. Gymnastics met with Feinstein about the federation’s sexual assault policies. How about this for a public-relations stunt: Tagging along was Mary Lou Retton, the smiling, bubbly sweetheart from the 1984 Games, as they said that the federation’s policies were solid and that gymnastics was a happy, safe place.”  (x)

MLR is also a huge defender of the Karoylis and was initially one of the dozens that liked or left supportive comments on Nassar’s facebook when Jamie Dantzscher’s then anonymous allegations came out.

MLR’s daughter McKenna Kelley doesn’t believe same sex marriage should be legal and she had to learn that from somewhere… plus apparently MLR thinks that it’s dangerous for gay people to adopt children.

Also the most overrated gymnast of all time who’s only major international competition was a boycotted Olympic games where she only won because scores carried over back then (Szabo fell on bars in the team final, so despite outscoring MLR on the day of the final, MLR won). Likely wouldn’t haven’t even medalled if Mostepanova, Yurchenko, Shushunova, Ricna, Gnauck, etc. were there.

Fun fact: MLR’s commentary during the 1988 Olympic Games was so bad that her mic was turned off.

And if the US had attended in 1980 then Kathy Johnson might be a household name now. I think it’s important to consider Mary Lou’s impact as well as her accomplishments and whether they would or would not have still existed in a different political situation. Fully attended or not she WAS the first Olympic champion from the US, and her achievements in LA got thousands of little girls across the country interested in gymnastics. Many of those little girls grew up to be on the 90s era teams that had even more milestone accomplishments for the US and cemented its place as a true gymnastics power. Without Mary Lou they might have never even tried the sport. So, at least in the US, you have to consider her a legend because she’s perceived as one by the public, again, boycott or no boycott.

I'm the same height as MLR and her dashboard phone tape stunt is doubly dangerous if you're that short. Not only are you taking your focus off the road, but you're actually creating a blind spot because you're too short to see over the phone. I can't drive any car where something is legally mounted on the dash (like a GPS) because I can't see over it. I don't see why they can't pull over for the 2 minutes of the meet in which McKenna participates.

Yeah, I’m about that height as well and was thinking the same thing. One time in North Carolina I had to put my phone up on this little ledge behind the steering wheel because the legally mounted GPS took my eyes so far off the road I would have crashed a thousand times. My eye line was more on par with behind the wheel than above the dashboard, and it was safer for me to look down for a microsecond than to look up. It was a stupid thing and it makes me laugh because she’s totally one of those parents who’s like “TRANSGENDERED PEOPLE USING BATHROOMS?!?!?! HOW DANGEROUS FOR MY CHILD!!!!!” while she’s literally like, watching TV in the car in the dark while driving her child around. That just pisses me off so much, that she is such a judgmental bitch about LGBT+ issues but then is like “no judgment!!!!! lulz!” when she’s actually putting her child at risk.
