For the first time in decades, no Romanian woman will compete in any of the finals at the 2017 World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal - the same city where, in 1976, Nadia Comaneci earned the first perfect 10 and put Romanian gymnastics on the map. What was supposed to be a special championship for the Romanian women quickly turned into a nightmare during the qualifications when Larisa Iordache suffered an Achilles injury during warm-ups and withdrew from the competition. Still, the Romanian women were able to demonstrate a great deal of resilience and determination. Just moments after watching Iordache go down, 15 year old first year senior Ioana Crisan made her World Championship debut and hit a beautiful floor routine. Soon after, 30 year old Catalina Ponor successfully did the full-twisting double layout, a skill which she had trained since 2012 but never actually competed. Although falls on balance beam ultimately kept the two out of finals, they were not quick to give up. Ioana lost her balance after her flight series and grabbed the beam but gave it her all to avoid coming down and touching the mat. Catalina knew her chances at the beam final were over right from the start when she fell on her incredibly difficult mount, but she got right back up and nailed her flight series. When her switch ring leap went wrong, she fought hard to regain her balance and successfully stayed on the beam. While it is certain that these two women were hoping for a better outcome for themselves and their country, they did not go out without a fight and should be proud of their efforts.
