Well hello again — we’re here to talk about my favorite gay who deserved better, Eliot Waugh. Last week we talked about Quentin Coldwater and now we’re gonna talk about his other half.

Eliot is a character that has a beautiful soul both in the books and in the show, where he’s played expertly by Hale Appleman. This is going to cover the first four seasons of The Magicians (season five does not exist as everyone is out of character so it’s not to be counted) and just like with Quentin’s it will have sprinklings of book spoilers.

Content warnings for homophobia, trauma, child abuse, sexual assault, addiction and substance abuse.

The Guide to Magic

“And seeing Eliot here, out of the blue, for no reason whatsoever, felt like proof that impossible things were still possible.”

Both in the books and in the show Eliot is our (and Quentin’s) introduction to magic. He’s the first person we meet at Brakebills, after all. From that point on he is enchanting. There’s no way to think of magic without thinking of Eliot. He is magic.

“Quentin did a magic trick. Nobody noticed.” (Lev Grossman, The Magicians)

These are the words Lev Grossman uses to introduce Quentin Coldwater to the audience. While this article will focus mostly on the television version — portrayed marvelously by Jason Ralph — there will be mentions of his book version as he’s just as important.

He is after all, Lev Grossman’s creation.

We wouldn’t have Jason Ralph’s Quentin without Grossman’s Quentin.

This will of course contain spoilers for the first four seasons of The Magicians and a sprinkle of spoilers for The Magicians trilogy. Trigger warning for anxiety, depression, and talk of suicide. I am not sure if I will be able to fully articulate how much Quentin means to me but I will try my best.

Why Can’t it Run on Love?

“What kind of system is that? Why can’t it run on love  — or cocaine?”

Quentin Makepeace Coldwater is introduced to us in a psych ward suffering from anxiety and depression. He has a father who tries his hardest but doesn’t understand him and a mother who has him convinced that he breaks things. Friends who mean well but talk past each other.  And yet throughout everything, he still believes in magic.

So I posted something yesterday and it has a lot of emotions about my love for Quentin Coldwater.

This might be one of the best things i’ve ever written

I wrote about why I think everyone should be watching Good Omens.
From the impeccable acting from David Tennant & Michael Sheen to the wonders that is @neil-gaiman‘s brilliance.
I talk about the music, the love and why this is exactly the type of series the world needs right now

Lucifer continues to be strong in Lucifer Season 4 Episodes 4 and 5, “All About Eve,” and “Expire Erect.” These are the episodes in which we are introduced to newcomer Inbar Lavi as Eve, try to figure out what Deckerstar’s dynamic is and deal with Lucifer trying to be the devil.
We leave off on Lucifer Season 4 Episodes 1-3, with Lucifer and Chloe at odds with one another. Lucifer is hurt that she can’t accept him and Chloe is trying her hardest to get past his devil face. For all intents and purposes, they have broken up.

My favorite show is back and you have no idea how good it feels. Lucifer Season 4 is a breath of fresh air.
Lucifer being canceled by Fox was most definitely a blessing in disguise, because honestly? I don’t think we would have this season if it was still on the same network. Lucifer Season 3 was lackluster but Season 4 goes above and beyond.
The reason I mention Season 3 is that the theme of that season was identity, and it’s actually a theme that is very well represented in Season 4. Who am I? What are the consequences of my actions? What’s the meaning of all this? These are all the things they touch on in this season.
It also deals with self-loathing and the things we’d do for those we love.
Let’s get into it, shall we?

Hello wonderful readers, it’s been a while. I’ll be taking on the even number reviews in this final Game of Thrones season.
I enjoyed this episode a lot but it was a strange episode. A friend of mine made a comment that both this episode and the previous one were set up episodes.
Episode one which we reviewed here, is the set up for Starks while this was the set up for everyone else. It sort of makes sense, but also slightly terrifies me because it means the next ep will really be a punch in the gut.
For now, we’ll talk about what isn’t great and move on to what I love. And as always
Winterhell 2.0
There are some parts of this episode which are bizarre. No, I’m not talking about Tormund’s weird stories. The show has dangled Jon’s paternity in our faces for eight years and yet there’s no reaction.

A Discovery of Witches Review: The Search Begins (Season 1 Episodes 1-3)

A Discovery of Witches has finally aired in the states and I can’t express how excited I truly am. It’s one of the best series I saw last year and I’m excited I get to review it now that it’s reached the States.
One thing I can’t do here that I would normally do in my other reviews is that I can’t make predictions. It would be unfair because I’ve already read the books so unless there’s a drastic…

My first review of ADOW is out now! In case anyone is interested

Lucifer S03E24 A Devil of My Word

Written By: Joe Henderson Directed By: Eagle Egilsson Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, Aimee Garcia, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Rachael Harris, Tom Welling Air Date: May 14, 2018
Have you ever come across a perfect hour of television that you kind of want to rewatch over and over for eternity? That, my friends, is how I feel about the Lucifer finale. I don’t really give perfect scores in reviews but holy hell (pun intended) this deserved it. Showrunner Joe Henderson is a mad genius, for real. Henderson felt really bad about the fact that this episode ends with a cliffhanger (given that Fox canned the show). I’m here to tell you, you don’t have to apologize for a single thing because this was incredible. The writing, the editing, the music, the acting and yes the cliffhanger.  Everything is glorious.
The only one I’m mad at is Fox.  You can’t give me an episode as perfect as this one and then take it away. That’s just mean. So I sincerely hope someone, anyone, rescues this phenomenal show. For anyone reading this: I recommend you sit back and enjoy because this might be a long read, but the episode deserves it.
Grief and Power
There’s no doubt everyone brought their A game to the finale. But if we’re being truly honest here Kevin Alejandro and Tom Ellis were glorious. They definitely raised the bar. One of the parts I loved the most about this episode is that they let Dan grieve. A lot of shows don’t do that. Here he can grieve the woman he loved.
Dan was not in a good place, but he soldiered through it. The scene of him walking into Charlotte’s apartment broke my heart. Diane Birch’s “The End” is playing in the background and just like Dan, we’re caught up in the emotions.

               Lucifer S03E23: Quintessential Deckerstar

Written By: Ildy Modrovich Directed By: Claudia Yarmy Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Tricia Helfer, DB Woodside, Kevin Alejandro Air Date: May 7, 2018
This is the Lucifer I love. This episode was mostly perfect and I was just in awe of it the entire time. Ildy Moldrovich wrote a spectacular episode called “Quintessential Deckerstar”, and frankly it was also a Quintessential Lucifer episode. In this episode, we get our characters back in character, not to mention Lucifer and Chloe are finally on the same page and Charlotte shows how much she’s grown.
Back to Normal
When you name an episode after a ship name and add the word Quintessential to it, there are certain expectations that come from that. Even if you’re trying to keep expectations low, there’s no way to avoid them. Well in terms of Deckerstar, this episode definitely exceeded them.
Lucifer wants to get back to normal, how they were before Pierce happened. He does so by trying to recreate all of their moments, their first meeting, the first time they played piano together (a personal favorite of mine), playing monopoly, smoking weed at a crime scene and of course their dance. In his own Lucifer way, it was what Lucifer considered to be the greatest hits. He had good intentions but let’s just say it backfired on him.
Lucifer had a really important revelation at the end of the last episode, so this new antic was slightly weird. I mean I found it endearing and like, ‘oh you adorable dumbass, just use your words’ but the timing was strange. Of course, Chloe isn’t completely on-board with it, even if she kind of finds it endearing too. Chloe realizes that you can’t go back to normal though, too much happened for that.

Lucifer S03E22 All Hands on Decker

Written By: Sheri Elwood Directed By: Eduardo Sanchez Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, Tricia Helfer, DB Woodside, Aimee Garcia Air Date: April 30, 2018
It’s the bachelorette party from hell and a murder because of puppies in this week’s Lucifer. The writers are definitely living up to their promise that the last episodes are impressive. The episode, “All Hands on Decker” was written by Sheri Elwood and directed by Eduardo Sanchez. It was a joy, for the most part, and features a lot of hilarity from the likes of Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, Tricia Helfer and of course Aimee Garcia. We’ll explore Douchifer again, the Tribe has another night out and Chloe makes a big decision.
#TeamLucifer
While Lucifer tries to understand Chloe’s decision, last week’s#TeamLucifer is on a mission; a mission to break up Pierce and Chloe. Amenadiel tells Charlotte they need to try a different angle, and so they agree to divide and conquer. Charlotte is truly brilliant and, other than Douchifer, is this episode’s MVP. She gives Amenadiel the idea to talk to Pierce and try to get into his head while she works on Chloe. After all, if anyone knows how Pierce must be feeling it’s Amenadiel himself.
Amenadiel meets up with Pierce in Lux and in what he calls the immortals turned mortal club. The point of it all is to freak out Pierce by talking about how short life can be for mortals. How it can all end in the span of a second, every moment could be your last. I do love when DB Woodside gets to be devious because he does it so well.

Lucifer S03E20 The Angel of San Bernadino

Written By: Jason Ning Directed By: Tara Nicole Weyr Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Tricia Helfer, Dan Alejandro, Tom Welling, Lesley-Ann Brandt Air Date: April 16, 2018
We finally get the show back after another damn hiatus! We’re in for a ride in these final five episodes of the Lucifer season. The Angel of San Bernadino, written by Jason Ning, had its highs and its very low lows. It featured what was truly a show-stopping performance from Tom Ellis, and a wonderful scene by Tricia Helfer. We got hilarity with Dan and Charlotte, a lot of Bones references, one of the best montages on television, and then that plot. I mean, I’m personally not a fan of messing with my female lead’s characterization, but I just review this show I don’t write it. Without further ado let’s get on with the show, we’ve got a lot to cover.
Flirting & Realizations
Charlotte and Dan were the best part of the episode. Their scenes were a breath of fresh air in a truly stressful episode. Following Charlotte’s revelation, she thinks that she can do whatever she’d like because after all, she’s friends with two angels. What follows is a lot of hilariousness.
Charlotte delights in telling people what she really thinks of them, their crappy stories or their cooking. Then she gets to Ella and it’s hilariously endearing because she cannot find a single negative thing to say about her. She tells Ella she thinks the latter is actually pretty incredible, and she’s not wrong.
We’re also treated to one of the greatest Charlotte and Dan scenes. Tricia Helfer and Kevin Alejandro have such an easy chemistry, it’s impossible not to root for them. They’re being flirty while drinking a lot of martinis and shots, and it’s adorable. Especially the part where she’s like, I can get you an in with the big guy and he’s just trying to guess who the big guy is. Like I mentioned, it’s a very necessary reprieve from the rest of the episode.

Lucifer S03E19 Orange is the New Maze

Written By: Jenn Kao Directed By: Nathan Hope Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Tricia Helfer, DB Woodside, Tom Welling Air Date: March 26, 2018
Remember how I made a joke about how Lucifer’s heart broke in last week’s review? I want to go back in time and slap that version of me. Because that episode was nothing compared to the pain Lucifer, and we, endured in this episode. When Lucifer delivers, it delivers. “Orange is the New Maze” was a mighty fine episode and writer Jenn Kao ought to be very proud. We are blessed with such a phenomenal group of actors in this cast, but this time the actresses took the lead. Lesley-Ann Brandt, Tricia Helfer, and Lauren German shone the brightest during this wonderful episode.
I’m Not Crazy
Maybe I’m a broken record but, as you lovely readers know, I love Charlotte Richards. Every episode that goes on reminds me of why I love her so much. It turns out the truth that Amenadiel told her last week wasn’t the full truth, more like the human version of it. Charlotte, being Charlotte, knows there’s more to the story.
She tells Linda about how Amenadiel told her he was her stepson and Linda advises her to let it be. Of course, Charlotte is going to dig further into the story. Which leads her to Lucifer. We hadn’t really had Tom Ellis interacting with Tricia Helfer since “Welcome Back Charlotte Richards” so this was a great scene. Not only because they’ve got great chemistry, but because their facial expressions are priceless.

                  Lucifer S03E18: The Last Heartbreak

Written By: Alex Katsnelson & Mike Costa Directed By: Hanelle Culpepper Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Tricia Helfer, DB Woodside, Kevin Alejandro,Tom Welling Air Date: March 19, 2018
How are we doing today? Did “The Last Heartbreak” break your heart? It certainly broke Lucifer’s! This week’s episode of Lucifer actually saw some progress in the actual plot but failed in some other areas. “The Last Heartbreak” was written by Alex Katsnelson and Mike Costa and they did a pretty good job. It was not a perfect episode, but it definitely hit quite a few of the right notes and moved along the plot.
It hurt my Deckerstar heart, but I knew it had to happen and ironically enough I’m okay with how it’s unraveling? Except for Cain’s reasoning, which we’ll get to soon; that’s still highly messed up and my girl deserves better. We did get fantastic performances across the board, though, and that’s always great. We are entering love triangle territory, people, so put on your seatbelts because it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
Sleight of Hand
So, I mentioned it in one of my earlier Lucifer reviews, but I was the type of person to have Tom Welling posters on my walls. He, along with Milo Ventimiglia, was the main source of love for preteen me during the days of Smallville and the WB. Did I age myself yet? So when I say I am a Welling fan I’m most definitely not just saying that. Marcus Pierce has not been the best character or the best performance. This episode was a change in that.
This episode gives us flashbacks to a case that Pierce solved way back when. We get treated to flashbacks of the girl he seemingly liked and the way he solved a case. He had wonderful chemistry with Fiona Gubelmann, who portrays both Kay and her granddaughter Maddie. At first I was like, great, another attempt at them trying to humanize Cain. That ship set sail when you had the man shoot a gun in Lux and threaten innocent lives. Not to mention we have to deal with the triangle nonsense. And then that final scene happened.

                         Lucifer S03E17: Let Pinhead Sing!

Written By: Ildy Modrovich & Sheri Elwood Directed By: Alrick Riley Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Tricia Helfer, Rachael Harris, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Kevin Alejandro Air Date: March 12, 2018
Sorry for the delay in pushing this review out; work was, for lack of a better word, hell. I did want to write something about this episode because I truly enjoyed it, even if I kind of wanted to strangle Lucifer from time to time. I love episodes written by the dynamic duo that is Ildy Modrovich and Sheri Elwood. Their last duo episode was “Vegas with Some Radish” and I think we all know how much I loved that. “Let Pinhead Sing!” was another wonderful episode that shows us what happens when we push away those we love.
Mediating Demons
Charlotte Richards is a true delight. Tricia Helfer is hilarious as she goes into her session talking about how she made conversation with someone in her office. She’s definitely making strides to do better while being herself and it’s kind of adorable to watch. And she is getting better at noticing when people aren’t themselves. Linda is distracted throughout their session so Charlotte suggests letting her mediate her and Maze. It goes as well as you think it will.

                 Lucifer S03E16: Infernal Guinea Pig

Written By: Jenn Kao & Julia Fontana Directed By: Eagle Egilsson Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Tricia Helfer, Rachael Harris, Tom Welling, Kevin Alejandro Air Date: March 05, 2018
In the spirit of honesty, I’ll admit when I heard the plot summary for this episode I groaned a bit. I’m not a big fan of Cain as a character, so an episode revolving around him? Not my style. But in true Lucifer fashion, the episode surprised me. I kind of really loved the episode is titled “Infernal Guinea Pig,” and it is written by Jenn Kao and Julia Fontana. It was hilarious when it needed to be and yet still hit you with the emotion when you least expected it.
Our Nightmares
Let’s talk about Charlotte Richards. I am probably the biggest, if not one of the biggest, Charlotte fans in the fandom. She’s one of my favorite parts of season 3, due in no small part to the enormous talent of Tricia Helfer.
This episode gave us a strong look into who Charlotte is, someone who fears losing control. Ever since we found out that Linda was going to be helping out Charlotte I was excited. It’s my personal opinion that everyone can benefit from a little bit of therapy. That doesn’t mean taking the first step is easy though. No, actually speaking about your traumas and your fears is one of the scariest feelings in the world. Which is why that first scene with Charlotte is so relatable.

Review – Lucifer S03E15: High School Poppycock

Written By: Chris Rafferty & Jen Graham Imada Directed By: Louis Milito Starring: Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Rachael Harris, D.B. Woodside Air Date: February 26, 2018

This week’s episode of Lucifer is the first one after the Winter Olympics hiatus. Let’s hope that was the last hiatus for a while, because those are not fun. This episode, however, was a lot of fun. But, while very fun and interesting, this episode suffered a bit from being overly hyped.
I loved the episode but I feel I would have loved it more if they hadn’t hyped it up so much. “High School Poppycock” was written by the phenomenal writing duo of Chris Rafferty and Jen Graham Imada. I have to give them and director Louis Milito props for writing a damn good episode.
Broken Hearts and Broken Friendships
First we’ll look at only part of the episode I wasn’t a fan of. Shit hit the fan in terms of the Amenadiel/Linda/Maze triangle. Despite some truly glorious acting from the trio, especially from Lesley-Ann Brandt and Rachael Harris, the story just doesn’t work. I love both Amenadiel and Linda as characters, and loved their scenes as friends but as a couple? They leave a lot to be desired.
He spent most of the first season manipulating her to get to Lucifer. Season 2 had them interacting on rare occasions. He helped Maze save her life and they hang out a few times and suddenly they are an epic love? I don’t really buy it. I wish I could because I love both characters, but all it did was make both of them look bad. Especially when you consider Maze.
