“Greatly he failed, but he had greatly dared.” - Ovid
Elia: Why are we lying on the ground?
Oberyn: You fainted so I laid down next to you so everyone would just think we were chillin’.
and folks, you have to remember that this was the only avenue available to Oberyn to receive the justice his family deserved. For 14 plus years, no one attempted to make amends with the Martells, no one was punished for their role in the brutal murders of a woman and her children, the Martells were offered nothing but the bones of their loved ones and were told to deal with it. There is something so poignant and so sad about Oberyn taking the opportunity of a trial by combat to put Gregor and the Lannisters on trial. He would have never been given a trial otherwise, never been able to probably judge and punish Tywin, and moreover, he would have never been able to so publicly, righteously, and violently skewer Tywin’s reputation as well as put an end to his sister’s rapist and murderer.
The Baratheons and the Lannisters gave the Martells no opportunity for justice, so Oberyn took it instead. He took the trial and made a spectacle out of it. Instead of letting everyone consider Tyrion’s situation, he took this captive audience and made them consider Elia’s situation instead.
And man, does it hurt. Not just the words and the outcome, but it hurts to know that this was the best and only thing Oberyn could do.
