of Clouds and Stars

@ofcloudsandstars / ofcloudsandstars.tumblr.com

Welcome everyone of the magical, the undefined, the chaotic and ethereal kind. This is a blog for my witch path and personal magical ramblings. I'm 28, a bioregional animist witch who is a bit nomadic but currently residing in London (air element, Libra). Originally from Montclair NJ and NYC. My preferred climate is four seasonal temperate deciduous. Coping with this gray oceanic highland climate in the UK that's like bi-seasonal. Femme-aligned agender, she/they, mixed black, pansexual, I follow the seasonal witch holidays but "secularly". I think my witch strengths are astrology (which most people follow me for) and spamming aesthetics/ideas for the sabbats.

This tart started my cooking spree tonight lol. It was a special magical tart just for this Sabbat. The crust was yummy and moist and made like an oatmeal sugar cookie flavored with almond extract and brown sugar. The filling was a custard flavored with homemade syrupy peach whiskey, honey and homemade jasmine extract. The peaches were from the union square farmers market and it’s topped with edible pearl dust and gold star sprinkles. The peaches were so delicious they were the best part of the tart but the oats together made it really yummy and earthy. (I choose oats cause of the harvest)

I was going to make some food for myself but my family is over so I decided to make a feast for everyone! It was worth it and fun to put together. I made elderflower mint iced tea which I put in the fish bottle, a yellow tomato (I find yellow tomatoes lucky for this Sabbat) salad with olives and basil served with ancient grain bread. (The loaf with the oats), zucchini and summer squash stir fry with turmeric, lemony cod fish and a strange summery melon I've never seen or heard of in my life but I love it it tastes like honeydew but with the texture of a ripe pear. For dessert I made a special tart which inspired the whole dinner but it's a honey peach oat tart. The crust is made like an oatmeal sugar cookie and it's soft and flavored with home made jasmine extract (we have a jasmine plant) and almond extract. The custard was flavored with what was left of a home made peach whiskey I had and honey and it was topped with farmers market peaches and gold star sprinkles. The custard texture cane out too soft cause I could only use coconut milk since there was no cow milk but it was still nice!! I'll probably have to keep practicing.

the august banner image from my instagram.  I am doing so much today but also creating a lot which makes me happy!! The right is supposed to represent the celestial events. There is a meteor shower this 11th that goes into the morning of the 12th. A partial Lunar eclipse the 7th on the full moon and a total solar eclipse the 21st around the new moon. The middle of course is August and the first harvest! And the left is a grasshopper that just wants to enjoy summer and play music while the ants are too busy preparing for the tougher times ahead and reaching their goals before the end of the harvest. Some ants are getting distracted though and dancing to the music too! I love the Ants and the Grasshopper story cause it’s such a Lughnasadth/Summer Crossquarter tale. It fits with the sabbat very well.

@suchprettypride Sorry I’m on mobile I’m going to be traveling today and I’m getting ready

So yes there is a holiday called Midsummer that’s not really the summer solstice it’s on June 25th and in some Christian cultures like specifically England it’s to honor some saint I forgot his name but there’s a lot of magic involved with the holiday especially with the fae.

But when I say Midsummer here in context it’s like saying Midautumn, midspring, midwinter which are also names I refer to the other crossquarters as. It can def get confusing in the pagan world for those pagans that observe Midsummer but I meant it as the Midsummer Sabbat since it’s the middle of summer.

I can try to edit the text around to make it a bit clear but I did attempt to type at the beginning the various names and why. I should edit it when I have the chance.

✧ . 🌾 Summer Crossquarter Solitary Rituals 🌾 *✧

The Summer Crossquarter is also referred to as Lammas and or Lughnasadth. Summer’s Pinnacle is only next week! It is the zenith of Summer (like the way the full moon is the pinnacle of the lunar cycle, this is the pinnacle of summer) where it's at it's height and it's hottest but after will begin the steady transition into fall and shorter cooler days. This is also the middle of the year where we start to enter the darker half of the remaining year and we acknowledge what we've gained so far (reaping what we sowed) yet seeing what it might take to reach our goals which lies ahead. It’s time to finish projects and enjoy the first harvest of the harvest season! Enjoy the wonderful concert of crickets, the height of summer and the wheat and corn feast. I have a personal correspondences post that might help explain why I chose certain things! (Also here is my personal tag!)

A lot of us witches practice alone and have our own solitary rituals for each sabbat that we observe (or the ones we’ve created just for ourselves that we observe alone!) Like any solitary eclectic witch I do things my own different way but some of these things might line up with others practices.

When I am alone and casting spells a lot of it is visualization/intent so my solitary rituals are more like activities I like to do then specifically casting a spell. If I am doing a spell with an activity based on it a lot would be listening to music to get in the mood and focusing on a candle while visualizing for a period of time! Eves are also important to my celebration as I like to stay up until midnight and cast a spell then!

August’s Eve

Monday July 31st 2017

  • Go to a farmers market and support the summer harvest there. If you have a bee farmers tent, support them and buy beeswax carved candles for your ritual and some honey. They often have beautiful beeswax candles that can make wonderful energetic centerpieces to rituals. The farmers market at this time of year will have delicious and many ripe things along with glorious summer flowers.
  • If you have a garden or work with a community garden, give your garden some offerings. Offer it water, crushed eggshells, and your gratitude. If you take things for your feast remember to thank it.
  • Enjoy some snacks while doing crafts like popcorn, wheat crackers, sunflower seeds, fruit gummies, peach rings, potato chips, fries, corn on the cob, there are lots of delicious snacks that are grains, potatoes, corn and summer fruit related.
  • Decorate your Altar and coat it in sunflowers, wheat, things that are bee related, maybe even potato related, corn husks, wheat structures and corn dolls, lazy eyed susans, ivy and beeswax candles. Use the colors that remind you of summer’s pinnacle and the harvest! I also like to add gold coins or even chocolate coins that are coated in gold foil that symbolizes prosperity and the rewards that come with hard work.
  • As a mixologist I love to make my own infusions and liqueurs and I also think alcohol drunk with intent can be very magical. This time of the year as everything is in season and herbs are at their peak I love to do an infusion with mint and gin or vodka, basil and vodka (most things with vodka cause vodka is like the ‘water’ of alcohol since its just ethanol diluted with water with no flavor. It’s like the clear quartz of spirits haha), rosemary and vodka, jasmine flowers and vodka and summer fruits with vodka too. I usually let them sit in large mason jars and when I shake them up I shake it with my intent. I take shots when getting into a headspace for magic or when I go to a circle with friends I make special drinks with them. If you work with entities it can make a wonderful offering. If you want to turn any of them into a liqueur (a sweeter smooth alcohol) just make simple syrup and you can add the same ingredients into the syrup to make it flavored to enhance the flavor of the infusion once you mix it in there.
  • If possible if you have a nice park somewhere or an area that's safe that you can go to, go camping! Spend a night under the stars and sing with the fireflies. For me to do a midnight spell under the stars would be glorious but I am also lucky to have a massive backyard with a massive lawn space and little fear of anyone bothering me there (other than racoons lol). I also have a sunroom I can sleep in.

Midnight Spell:

  • Focus on what you would like to complete and goals to accomplish. This sabbat is great to set goals and help break through obstacles.
  • If you prefer a more physical activity based ritual than a visualization one you can do a practice by making a vision board of what you want to accomplish. Place it down on the floor like a grid and light a candle in the center to focus energy and intention to what you want (also energetically charging it) before hanging it in front of your bed.
  • Basil is also in season and basil is an herb of prosperity. You can eat basil in a spell to symbolize the wealth you will gain or make an oil spell with it by infusing it in a carrier oil to bring prosperity into your life when you apply it on you. (Oregano as well!)

Summer Crossquarter (lughnsasadth) Day

(Wednesday June 21st 2017)

  • Go on a journey! If possible take a trip to the woods! Hiking and just spending time outside where it’s sunny is nice too. The beach during this time of the year (August to mid September) is IDEAL because throughout summer the heat has warmed up the water so the water is a lot warmer.
  • Bake Bread! If wheat is not your thing then corn bread or corn muffins are lovely! There is also zucchini bread as zucchinis are also in season and zucchini bread is delicious! If bread isn’t your thing at all no matter it’s contents then you can always enjoy a baked potato!
  • make a bee fountain because there’s always time and wonderful magic in making a bee fountain.
  • Do an enjoyable physical activity like hiking, bike riding, rock climbing, swimming, archery, fishing or kayaking. Lugh was a god of friendly sport and competition and this sabbat can be enjoyed by engaging in fun sport. If none of this sounds appealing to you (highly understandable) there are other ways to enjoy the summer outdoors passively without much physical effort.

Evening

  • Celebratory Dinner Cook a dinner with foods of the summer harvest! Eat corn, wheat, potatoes, berries, melons, peach ciders, bread bowls, pastas, popcorn. For the 'meat' selection I love to eat fish as it resembles wealth in many cultures and catching a reward.  and enjoy any beer, cider or fruit juice that corresponds with summer’s harvest as well.
  • Make a plate for any entities you like to work with.
  • Also practice feeling gratitude for the things you have accomplished and acknowledge the rewards of your hard work.

between the two summer sabbats it’s interesting how they compliment each other in the way that I practice them.  Summer solstice is more fire and air where as Midsummer is more water and earth. Summer Solstice is celebrated with fire, the sun, blue skies, fireworks, fireflies, sparks, bonfires and Midsummer is the celebration of the leafy emerald greens bearing fruit and vegetables, the fish in the water, the streams, the summer storms that quench the earth and help things to grow. Midsummer is about prosperity which is fitting that it’s colors for me are gold for the wheat and corn harvest but it’s also green for the vegetables and deep thick emeralds that surrounds me in my woodsy hometown. Also green for me is very much a color for prosperity so it’s still fitting.

Lughnasadth {Fantasy} Feast

Continuing the tradition of making fantasy feasts that one day I will get to enjoy for real! At least I am planning a fruit tart for this sabbat! So its like 10% real. (ImbolcOstaraBeltane, Litha).

This is the first harvest of the year and the summer harvest! There will naturally be lots of wheat, bread and corn, fruits and ripe vegetables! It’s a very green and gold feast which is fitting because it represents rewards earned through hard work. You can look at my post of personal correspondences for more info or follow my Lughnasadth tag!

It’s a cocktail but I would make it a non-alcoholic option

Lughnasadth/Summer CrossQuarter Personal Correspondences

The Summer harvest is approaching! It’s the first harvest of the year! This sabbat to me represents reaping the rewards of hard work all year long, and if you feel like your goals have not been met, you still have 5 months (a little less than a half a year) to achieve them! Especially if you started a garden in spring you will see literal ‘rewards’ emerging in your garden now. Vegetables are ripening, garden herbs are ready for use, this is also the time when berries are ready to be foraged and farmers markets are bustling with fresh produce. Lughnasadth is about celebrating the abundance and the awards you’ve gathered from hard work from the first half of the year. It also marks the beginning of the harvest season! A great way to celebrate it is by having a garden party if you grow your own vegetables or a large picnic feast in the park.

Lughnasadth - The First Harvest

August 1st

Colors:

  • Gold for Prosperity and wealth
  • Emerald for wealth, the summer greenery, the first garden harvest, money and abundance.
  • Beige color of wheat, grains, potatoes, bread and Ale. The central foods that are in harvest.

Crystals:

  • Aventurine
  • Citrine
  • Tiger’s Eye
  • Moss Agate

Herbs and Plants:

  • Wheat
  • Corn
  • Black Eyed Susans
  • Garden Herbs
  • Sunflowers

Animals:

  • Bees
  • crickets for the summer music!
  • grasshoppers I associate the ant and the grasshopper with this sabbat for its morals

Decorations:

  • Wheat garland
  • Green garland like leaves and ivy
  • Corn husks more traditional: Corn Dolls
  • Hay

Food:

  • Wheat, Dough and Corn: The biggest symbol and major focus of harvest on this day is Wheat! It is custom to bake bread with the flour of the first harvested wheat as a symbol of gratitude and reward for hard work and what your hard work will reap for the resting period of the year. Bread is custom, and breads with herbs can honor the garden herbs in season. There’s a lot that can be done with bread and dough. Since a lot of vegetables are in season one could make a well seasoned summer vegetable pizza with spiced zucchinis and eggplants. One could make a soup bowl, or dip bowl. Corn is more involved in American cuisine, but we are (or at least I am) in America and corn is the staple of many cultures as well so if you feel more inclined to use corn do so! Both are great and are golden and represent wealth! If you have more of a caribbean or latino background you can make some delicious polenta with summer vegetables or bring tortilla chips with dip to a gathering or make handmade tortillas. I mean whether it’s grits, cornbread (my favorite), or just corn on the cob with butter cream, herbs and paprika, corn is very versatile and can be served in a number of ways, especially if you care about establishing a connection to your heritage. If you are more of a wheat person you can stick to breads and pastas. Tomatoes are beginning to get in season around now so that will pair well with pasta salads or sauces for dishes.
  • The Vegetable Harvest: As I’ve mentioned a number of times, many vegetables are coming in season. There are cucumbers, zucchinis, peppers and tomatoes to name a few off the top of my head. This year I would like to attempt to make ratatouille but any dish with in season vegetables especially if its from the fruit of your labor (the garden) or locally grown from a farmers market will represent the festivities of this sabbat. You can hit two birds with one stone by preparing some deliciously moist zucchini bread.
  • Fruity Season: There are also many fruits that come in season at this time. Berries are ripe and ready to be picked. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries would be great to put in desserts. If you want to get into the spirit of the wheat harvest you could use some dough to make a berry pie or tart. Peaches are also ripe and in season and would make a great peach cobbler. Then there are the melons that I believe have been in season for a bit but now canteloupes are especially delicious and ripe along with honeydew and of course watermelon. Serving fruity wine, or a sangria or punch with these fruits would be great for the festivities or to bring to a picnic.
  • Ale, Fruity Ciders, Wine and Whiskey! Also for drinks you can drink Ale or any wheat based bears. Whiskies are ok too since some like Bourbon, Wheat or Rye whiskey are corn and wheat based.  Fruity wines are a plus and wine in general because the grape harvest is soon. Fruity beers or ciders like Peach cider are perfect or fruity beers. I’m not the biggest fan of fruity beers but a fruity shandy like a light beer mixed with a fruit cider or fruit soda (or fruit syrup with club soda) could be a great subsitute.
  • Sweets and Treats! For sweets like treats and candy anything that reflects the fruits in seasons like fruit gummies are great. Making home-made gummies are really easy, it’s just a lot of gelatin and fruit juice. If you want to go the extra mile you can make hard candy or gummies with fresh pressed fruit juices (or buy Hasboro fruit gummies that are cute and fruit shaped or even Welches honestly). Also since this sabbat is about abundance and earning from the hard work you put in then gold coin chocolates would be fun to pass out too!

Instruments/Music:

  • Acoustic guitar, Lute Also I love the album L'Ecornifleur by Francois Pernel, I feel like it captures the feeling of this time of the end of summer outdoors celebrating yet sleepy feel. (Link is to the full album to listen to!)

Fragrances/Incense:

  • Sandalwood
  • Nectar
  • Honey
  • Ylang ylang
  • Basil
  • Mint

Ahhhh I forgot to add for food! Fish would be the ‘meat’ of choice because of the symbolism of catching your fish which represents fortune and goodluck and earning something rewarding after patience and hard work. Other seafood could work too but personally I would go with fish like Bass or Salmon

I'm thrilled my dad is teaching me how to care for the hive while he's away. I've always wanted a beehive and the bees are so kind and docile. He gave me a small extra piece of honeycomb and I love the pattern. It's on my summer crossquarter altar now.

In the process of cleaning my space and I cleansed my altar and have it set for the Summer Crossquarter. I wanted to record the pretty song of the crickets since it's such a summery vibe but aloud ass ice cream truck came haha but it helps the summer theme too. It smells like lemongrass, citronella, straw, lemons, ginger, sandalwood and cedar.
