"Why are you still on tumblr, it's a dead site" Tumblr is the ONLY site that still works in the way of -Follow this person, see their posts- instead of -you stopped scrolling and stayed on this post for .2 seconds longer than others, here's 100 more posts like it- I hate algorithms. Tumblr has its many issues. But at least I keep my choice of what I see.
Community notes are a rare but strong tw*tter W that shit is so funny news corps are so used to spreading propaganda with impunity and now there's a dedicated area where people with actual brains and souls to be like "this is fake and factually incorrect and intellectually dishonest and here's why lol have a good day <3"
Like. I'm crazy but I'm not "shamelessly forming a parasocial child-parent like relationship with a politician out in the open for everyone on the internet to see" crazy that's embarrassing
anyway
updated version
Tiktok is the British museum of the internet (very derogatory ofc)
Yes I do say “I’m not on TikTok” with an air of arrogance intended to assert dominance
Willful ignorance, refusal to adapt to where the culture is happening, pride in non-participation.
You can see how conservative ideology takes hold in every generation.
it's not anything new though, that tumblr users espouse incredibly stupid, out of touch, contradictory belief sets. every new crazy piece of tumblr discourse is just another blip of data that adds to an already clear picture.
if you dont wear a mask you're a plaguemonger BUT public sex is a-ok BUT playing videos outloud in public earns a death sentence BUT you can't ask adults to show basic consideration because they might be neurodivergent BUT you can treat children as subhuman for their inconvenient lower capacity to function BUT we need to protect all vulnerable groups BUT we can't critique things like porn/sex industry that directly contributes to human rights violations BUT you should absolutely threaten violence on people who like the wrong cartoons etc. etc. etc.
i know it's not always the same exact people thinking all these exact things. but it's an obvious pattern of people holding contradictory beliefs that they twist themselves into knots rationalizing. so i don't get why people act like any new discourse is particularly surprising. it always fits into the picture perfectly.
tumblr users: i hate tiktok it's the worst
every post of a tiktok video: 12,746 reblogs, 45,094 likes
yes but the experience of occassionally seeing a curated-by-my-homies tiktok vid on my dash is so violently different from the endless stream of scrolling through algorithmic video content. i crave variety. what is my social media experience without walls of text interrupted randomly by videos of ducks and pictures of weird vegan brownies.
i don’t know about you guys but the main reason i am still on tumblr in 2024 is BECAUSE it is the most cloutless least influential social media app out there and that is the experience i am after. absolutely none of this will ever translate into significant attention or real success in my life and that is so beautiful.
genuinely partially agree with the people on twitter
nobody NEEDS a pillow collection that says "live laugh love", especially when they are never used as actual pillows
it's like buying an off-road car as a farmer and keeping it in the garage to only be looked at and admired
having things with form over function in mind is a luxury problem that wouldn't be a thing in a not classist environment in which you constantly compete with everyone else about who has the perfect life
i also think that if you still disagree, you probably have lost control over your own life choices, or may have never had any
Hey man how's it going
Oh my fucking god
Couches are uncomfortable without pillows, especially when snuggling in gor a movie. From talking with other women in my life this seems like a fairly commen thought, but from talking with the men in my life they seem to think the opposite. My theory is that couches are made for men, size wise. So if you buy couch pillows, you may be a woman.
i have a hot take about vine and tik tok if you allow me
vine’s entire concept was “show don’t tell” while tik tok’s entire concept is “tell don’t show”
might risk sounding like an Old Fart but i want to elaborate what i mean:
sometimes i will see Tiktoks that are just people talking to a camera about a thing that happened to them and then at the end… won’t even show the thing they’re talking about. they’re just talking to a camera. that or the few staged jokes take waaaaaay too much time to get to the punchline, and the punchline isn’t even funny (and the acting is bad)
meanwhile on vine, you only had 7 seconds, and in 7 seconds you could have anything happen, and a dude said “back at it at krispy kreme” and did backflips and kicked out a sign in his final flip and the video just cut with no explanation, and it was the greatest vine on earth
So I’ve been teaching 6th grade since January, and one thing about my female students which made me upset to realize is how many of them are obsessed with skincare. I've heard the girls in my class discussing the EYE CREAM they use. Like tf you mean eye cream? You're ELEVEN!!! I'm a decade older than you and have never even touched eye cream!! The most skincare a middle schooler needs is cleanser and moisturizer, maybe some acne cream. Who tf is selling you all this other stuff? Who tf told you you needed all this?
It hurts me to see. Their brains are too young for these types of insecurities 😭 no 11 year old girl should be obsessed with wrinkles, I wanna beat tf out of whatever tiktoker made them believe they needed skin that perfect
Do you know how fucking miserable it is to watch a group of 11 year old girls obsessively check their skin on pocket mirrors? And hear them talk about how they need new products to fix “imperfections” created by tiktok?? I just taught them last week what the OCEAN TIDES are. I helped one of them spell the word “conduction” yesterday. They just learned what the atmosphere is. Who the fuck is telling these literal children that they need eye cream??!! When I catch you!!!
the idea of tumblr being dead is so funny to me because it’s the only social media where i actually feel like other people are online at the same time
one of the beauties of vine was that six seconds was simply not enough time to even attempt to be informational. you could always be confident that even if a vine wasnt very funny, at least nobody was ever gonna try and "learn you a thing" about the most current political situation or fandom shit
The fact that tumblr is my primary social media is proof that I’m far gone
Twitter users will not survive the winter
What do they mean it’s impossible to have conversations there’s at least three different ways to do so here
"It's impossible to have conversations there" -person coming from a website where DM'ing is now paywalled behind Twitter Blue.
"Your timeline hasn't moved in 45 minutes" Then follow people?????
skill issue
we are too busy booping to post much
Sometimes I can still hear their voice
Breaking: TikTok is better bc it’s more hostile towards humanity
The lack of video content is what kept us here... I thought we all agree that the best feature of this hellhole was and always will be anonymity.
Tumblr's not asking for my phone number. It's not going through my contacts to try and connect me with my fucking colleagues. I can come here and talk about whatever I want without anyone ever seeing my face or hearing my voice. I don't have to censor myself and hide my interests or enthusiasm out of fear of consequences it might have in my real life.
I think the biggest misunderstanding they have of Tumblr is that they think of it as a social media platform when in actuality it's a blogging platform with social features.
I like the use of Metroman here because if there's one thing Tumblr users collectively agree on it's that we want everyone to think we're dead
Not to be a Boomer but your social media should be your own space, not something employers are allowed to look at to judge you beyond the qualifications stated in your resume and cover letter
The other day my work had us take a social media survey about what social media platforms we’d be comfortable posting about our products on and I selected “I don’t use social media” before immediately coming over to Tumblr to dunk on them
