“I spoke to Louis just yesterday actually. I speak to Louis more than I speak to anybody else and it’s not a case of we don’t get on or whatever, I just think for some of us, we’re all interested in quite different thing. Louis was always the one in the band that I was kind of closest with. He was much more with One Direction behind the scenes, steering the wheels of which way the music would [Interviewer: Was he?] Massively! Massively! And people don’t actually know it, to be honest with ya. Several moves I’d have made, we would fall out about and he was more right than I was, then on stage, if we were on stage somewhere, and if that’s my solo and I’ve done it for so many years, and was my domain almost, so together we would kind of lead through the passage together. Maybe because we couldn’t get our egos to go ‘you’re the leader of the band’ ‘no, you’re the leader of the band!’, no one do it, so right, do it together! We still have that same stick with each other when I call him up like, oh ‘if you need something for this let me know I’ve got this’, you know, we very much help each other out. Together we would kind of lead it through this passage [of roles in the band] together”
