@glowweek final day!
Day 7: Journey's End
Laughter fills the air as children run about, playing games of tag with each other and a few smaller gems. Sunshine with a few clouds and a light breeze makes for a beautiful, comfortable day. A perfect day for everyone to get together for their annual reunion atop the hill above the temple. They hold this reunion every year, always in the same place. Thank goodness they fixed the fence on top of the hill, and closed off the lighthouse. Some of these kids get a little too rambunctious for their own good.
Pearl smiles at the children running about, the adults chatting with various gems, and the overall peace and tranquility. They all worked so hard to earn this peace, and continue to work hard to protect and maintain that peace.
Her eyes, like always, are drawn to a few specific people. A child, short with a familiar smile, a young preteen with long limbs and unique pink eyes, and a young adult with dark skin and silky curls with pink highlights. The diversity of the group before her never ceases to amaze her, along with the sheer similarity they all seemed to bear to two particular people.
Two people who are the reason they all gather today, humans and gems from all over the universe. Hundreds of them all gathered to reconnect with each other and celebrate. Even the diamonds join in, cautiously sitting near the edge of the festivities, and are often used as jungle gyms by the children, thanks to the encouragement of Spinel. The parents would worry, but they've all known the diamonds their whole lives, and they know the diamonds wouldn't let anything happen to them.
Loading a plate full of various foods Pearl turns towards her fellow Crystal Gems. She walks over to join the group, and hands the plate to Amethyst who takes it gratefully. Garnet sits next to Amethyst, arm around her shoulder while she munches. Bismuth stands next to Pearl, wrapping a muscular arm around her shoulders in support, while Peridot and Lapis sit on the ground leaning on each other.
They all stand before a group of memorial gravestones. On one side is a large memorial statue of a lion sleeping. Next to it is a small unassuming gravestone bearing the names of Greg Universe, and Rose Quartz, with dates under their names and engraved with a small rose in the center. On the other side is another small unassuming gravestone bearing the names of Priyanka and Doug Maheswaran with dates under their names as well.
In the center is a slightly larger memorial gravestones bearing the names Connie Universe-Maheswaran, and Steven Cutie Pie DeMayo Diamond Universe. On top of the stone is a small stone house-shaped structure, protecting a bubbled pink diamond gemstone inside.
The crystal gems will never forget the day age finally caught up to Steven. He passed peacefully in his sleep, his gem never reformed, even when removed from his body. To protect him, just in case, White Diamond herself bubbled his gem. The bubble, clear and iridescent, allows them to see him clearly where they placed it upon his gravestone.
He and Connie both lived much longer than most humans, Steven outlived many, many of his descendants, and though they'll always miss them both, the gems know they're both at peace now.
After a few moments longer of mourning and remembering, and a few tears, the group returns to the festivities. Amethyst speeds off to roughhouse with the Famethysts, Pearl joins some younger family members in a game of volleyball with Bismuth, while Lapis and Peridot join a group of gems and humans chatting about various plant life found on other planets.
Garnet pauses before joining the others and turns back to the gravestone. Light shines across the diamond. Her visor reflects the light for a moment, a small smile plays across her lips as she turns and walks away to join the Universe Family Reunion.
Second to last @glowweek prompt!
Day 6: Vacation
Beach City in the summertime! Sun shining, barely a cloud in the sky, people and gems mill about with their ice cream, or slushies. Families gather together on the beach, enjoying the warm sand, basking in the sunlight or splashing around in the water.
On a single blanket with a large umbrella to protect them from the sun's harmful rays sits a new, young family. Majority of the fellow tourists steer clear of the small family with their giant pink umbrella, mostly because of the equally pink lion sleeping next to them. Though that doesn't always stop some of the more adventurous children from indulging their curiosity when their own parents' attention on them wanes.
Steven huffs as he discourages yet another kid, this one barely 4 years old, from trying to climb into Lions mouth. He and Connie know Lion would never hurt anyone, but the last thing they need to deal with while on vacation is panicked parents who, upon finally noticing their absent kid, see them inside the mouth of a massive predator!
“Try to relax hon,” Connie says as she smears a little sunscreen on the face of the small child in her lap, “Lion wouldn't bother opening his mouth for those kids anyways, let alone let them try to climb in!”
“I know, I know, it's just I want you to be able to enjoy your time off without dealing with angry parents.” He slumps onto the ground and gently pats his furry friend's head.
“Thank you, but really, don't worry so much.” She smiles at him, then hands the baby to Steven.
“Here, hold Amie for me while I put sunscreen on your back.”
Steven takes his favorite little bundle of joy from his wife. While he enjoys a light shoulder massage from Connie he plays with Amie, blowing raspberries and making her giggle like crazy.
“Steveeeen! Stevenstevensteven Steven!! And Conniiieee!!” A short green gem screeches as she zips across the sand towards them.
Peridot slides towards them, doing a perfect hook slide, and Steven quickly lifts Amie up and away from the impact zone. No sand is getting in his baby's eyes, not today, not on his watch! Peridot jumps up, dusts off some sand and stands proud, hands on her hips, giant grin on her face.
“Finished your gardening lessons for the day?” Connie asks.
“Indeed I have and I'm the first to arrive! Yes!” She cheers and leaps against Steven to give him a tight hug.
Connie takes Amie so Steven can hug her back, “You humans and this whole “growing up” thing! I can't even get my arms all the way around you anymore! Stop that you clod!” Peridot complains.
“Pretty sure I'm done growing now, Peri.” Steven snickers.
“C-mmm… cwrod!”
The two adults and Peridot freeze, all three heads turning towards the small human in Connie's arms.
“Did… did she just…?” Steven mutters, stunned.
“Her first word!!” Connie practically squeals with joy! “Wait… isn't clod a kind of… gem insult?” Connie asks.
Steven looks to Peridot, “You're the only one I know who regularly says clod… Peri did you… basically teach my daughter a gem swear word!?”
“YES!” Peridot shouts with glee, “That's right little Amie! Clod! Cl-od!”
“Cwod!” Amie says, then blows a spittle bubble. Peridot giggles like a little gremlin, positively delighted. It's obvious to her that Amie doesn't understand what that means just yet, but it won't be long before she does if Peridot has anything to say about it, and much more!
“Peridot. I can tell what you're thinking. No more teaching Amie bad words!” Steven scolds the green gem.
Amie just keeps giggling from where she sits perched on her momma's lap in the shade of their umbrella.
Later that day Pearl nearly faints when she picks up her sweet little Amie and she calls her a clod.
@glowweek day 5: Family
“Steven! Connie!” Amethyst yells as she spin dashes her way into the cottage.
“Amethyst!” Steven yells back in glee, snatching her up before she can crash straight into Connie.
The two laugh and giggle as Steven tosses Amethyst around. He throws her into the air, catches her and spins her around and around. He's so incredibly excited to see them all! She'll never get over just how tall he's gotten either! So much for the shorty squad!
“Hello everyone!” Pearl waves as she enters, carrying a small casserole dish.
Garnet follows behind her silently, grin on her face the moment she sees, now all grown up, Steven, and the engagement rings they both wear. She places the grocery bags of fresh cut fruit Pearl had insisted they bring in the kitchen counter. Greg follows next, all smiles and laughter as his son, somehow taller than him now, practically crushes his ribs in a bear hug.
“Connie! Steven!” Two more voices call out as they enter.
“Mom!” Connie practically squeals with delight, “I'm so glad you made it!”
Priyanka hugs her only child tight, “I missed the last get together, there was simply no way I was going to miss another!”
“Especially not after hearing the crazy shenanigans we got up to with charades last time!” Doug mutters quietly to his daughter, making her giggle at the memory. Amethyst had cheated and used shapeshifting, resulting in all the gems using it, then arguing, and somewhere along the lines a pillow getting busted throwing feathers everywhere. She and Steven were still finding stray feathers in odd places when they cleaned, and it's been nearly two weeks!
“Are you eating well sweetheart? You look a little pale.” Priyanka asks, placing her hand on Connie's forehead to check her temperature.
Connie giggles again, “I'm fine Mom. I promise.”
Not entirely convinced, Priyanka hums and resolves to heap some extra food on her daughter's plate for dinner. She may be an adult now, but she'll always be her little girl, and she'll always care for her.
“So what game are we playing today?” Amethyst asks.
“We actually haven't decided yet. Connie and I figured this week we could leave it up to a vote.” Steven says, a grin still plastered on his face. He can't stop smiling. He's just so, so excited! He loves seeing his family, and spending time with them.
Once he and Connie had gotten engaged, and moved into their little cottage, they'd contacted Bismuth about installing a small local warp pad, so the gems and humans could visit more easily. Then they all agreed on a twice a month dinner and game night, which Pearl has made sure they stuck to. Every two weeks they gather together, have a fun little potluck style dinner and play some fun family games.
At first it was just charades, or Yahtzee, but after a while everyone started getting bored with the same old same old. So Steven went out and began collecting tons of different types of games to play. Ranging from Settlers, to Wonders, and tons of card games. One of which had such raunchy results that Pearl nearly poofed and Greg and Priyanka both nearly passed out. They've since shelved that one, though whenever Amethyst visits she insists they play, and the three will often have a good laugh the entire time.
The gem and human family gather around the large table, laden with all sorts of food, and begin to dish up. Amethyst heaps her plate full, and Priyanka successfully sneaks extra green bean casserole onto her daughter's plate when she's not looking. Her eyes meet Stevens, he's doing the same thing with the mashed potatoes, heaping extra onto Connie's plate while she's distracted chatting with Pearl. The two exchange an embarrassed smile and giggle before returning to their own plates.
“So! Connie, Steven, how's the wedding planning going?” Pearl can't help but ask.
Swallowing his bite of food Steven says, “Good, Garnet’s been a huge help! Well, more like she's taking care of pretty much everything, but still!” He laughs, Garnet grins again, fiddling with her thumbs. She seems to be practically vibrating with excitement in her chair.
They all continue with the small talk for a short while, Doug asking Connie about work, Greg telling Steven about the latest tour news, and Amethyst snarfing down any leftover food she can grab. Garnet, unable to hold it in anymore, stands rapidly from her seat, practically shaking the plates off the table in her haste. Everyone stops to stare at her as she stands, shuddering, massive grin across her face.
“Okay, okay!” Steven holds up his hands. Figuring they've tortured the poor fusion, with her future vision long enough he and Connie stand as well.
“There's one thing we wanted to say before we do anything else.” Connie says.
With everyone's unbridled curiosity, thanks to Garnet, and undivided attention Connie says, “Steven and I have been together for a long time now. I've got a stable well paying job, we've got this beautiful house, a wedding coming up and such a wonderful growing family.”
She places her hand over her stomach, a light blush and gentle smile drifting across her face. Steven places his hand over hers, and grins brightly. Priyanka gasps, Garnet bounces where she stands, but Doug, Greg, Pearl and Amethyst still seem a little lost.
“We're pregnant!” Connie and Steven exclaim together, Steven providing some jazz hands for added effect.
Chaos breaks out as Pearl and Priyanka squeal in delight, Greg, Doug and Amethyst cheer and jump around in excitement, and Garnet lifts Steven into her own bone crushing hug.
Forget games, the family spends the rest of their evening asking questions, planning dates and parties, and just so, so excited for the future and all the changes it's about to bring.
“No wonder Steven caught me before I could roll into Connie!” Amethyst laughs.
Today's @glowweek prompt!
Day 4: Nurture
Steven's morning started just like any other. Get up just before Connie, kiss her warm forehead, shower and get breakfast and coffee ready. Connie works hard with her career, so Steven works just as hard to support and care for her in turn.
With one last finishing touch, the perfect breakfast bagel sandwich is done! Coffee is ready and steaming in Connie's favorite mug. The last step is for his favorite person in the whole universe to come trudging down the stairs, hair disheveled, cute, grumpy little scowl on her face as she makes a beeline for the mug of coffee.
Steven waits, and waits, and waits some more. Checking the clock he realizes if Connie doesn't come down soon she's going to be late. Connie's not much of a morning person, but she's never late! Steven decides to give her another minute before he goes to check on her. Connie doesn't like being pushed too much in the morning, especially before her first dose of caffeine, so Steven tries to give her her space usually.
Finally, movement can be heard as true to form Connie comes trudging down the stairs. Only, she's not dressed, instead she's wrapped in their fluffy warm blankets, eyes bloodshot, sniffling quietly.
“Hey Steven, I called in to work today. I think I've got a cold.” She says through a stuffy nose.
“A cold!? You're sick? You never get sick! How did you get sick!? Should I try to heal you?” Steven fusses around her.
“I probably got it from not wearing a coat in the rain yesterday. Don't worry, it's just a cold. I'll be fine tomorrow, for today I just need to rest.”
Steven gently places his hand on her forehead. She does feel a little warmer than usual. He had noticed she seemed somewhat warm when he kissed her earlier, but it hadn't even occurred to him she might be sick!
“Don't worry Connie. I'll take care of you today! Anything you need!”
Steven guides her to their comfy couch, bundling her up all tight and cozy in their blankets, and fluffs the pillows for her. He goes back over to the kitchen, dumps out the coffee and rinses the mug before filling it with crisp cool water and returning to Connie. She gratefully sips on the water as Steven brings her breakfast over and places it on the coffee table along with the remote for their little TV.
“Anything else I can get you?” He asks.
Connie smiles at Steven, shaking her head. It's been so long since anyone has taken care of her like this. Last time she had a cold she was still a kid, maybe before she'd started training with Pearl? Either way, her mom had stayed home with her all day, keeping her comfortable, and making sure she stayed hydrated. She’d fuss about, check Connie's temperature every hour, cook her some healthy, immune-supporting foods, and spoil Connie a little bit by letting her watch whatever she wanted on TV. Sometimes she'd even give Connie one of her rare, amazingly delicious, cups of homemade hot cocoa to soothe a sore throat. Now Steven is filling that roll, tucking her in again, putting her favorite show on the TV, and getting her a fresh cup of water.
“Thank you Steven. I'll be alright.”
Steven spends the rest of the day fussing over Connie, while Connie spends the rest of the day basking in the attention and love from her fiance. Especially when he sits on the floor next to her, gently running his fingers over her scalp and through her hair the way she loves. He makes her feel so safe and comfortable.
He'll make a great dad someday, she can tell.
Got so busy yesterday I forgot to find time to post for the @glowweek prompt! So here's Day 3: Rain
Dreary.
That's the only way Steven can think of to describe the day. It's been cold, cloudy and gray all day. At least if it was raining he could enjoy the sounds of pattering on the roof of their small cottage. As it stands he's just futzing about the house while Connie, enjoying her day off, does a little gardening.
He watches her from the kitchen window, gloves in hand, tank top and jeans covered in dirt as she plucks weeds from around the various vegetables. Steven himself has been banned from gardening by Connie. He's too prone to accidentally bringing the plants to life and she's gotten tired of calling the gems to help find a place for the new sentient plant life to live.
All at once the sky suddenly opens up. As rain pours from the sky, Steven rushes to find Connie's jacket, or umbrella, or something. He loves running around in the rain, but it's been so cold today, even he wouldn't want to be stuck out in it.
“Steven!” Connie calls, “Steven could you come help me?”
“I'll be right there, I'm just looking for your coat!” He calls back
“Don't worry about the coat, I'm already soaked. Would you just come help me pull the last of these weeds please? Sooner it's done, sooner we can have a nice hot cup of tea.”
“Yeah alright!” Steven shrugs, still no idea where any of their jackets went, and heads out into the rain.
It's really not raining as hard as it seemed at first, and it doesn't take long for the two to finish the weeding.
“There, all done!” Steven proclaims, pleased with their, mostly Connie's, hard work.
Splat!
A glob of mud oozes down Steven's face as Connie giggles from where she's kneeled at the edge of the garden. Steven narrows his eyes at his fiance. Oh so that's how it's gonna be? He crouches, like Lion, ready to pounce. Connie sees what he's thinking and pauses her giggling.
“Steven,” she warns, “If you're thinking, what I think you're thinking, you better stop thinking it!”
With a grin Steven launches at Connie, snatching her up around her waist as she squeals in protest.
“Steven!”
He falls backwards onto the muddy ground, Connie wrapped safe and tight in his arms, and promptly rolls around in the mud, getting them both completely coated in the cold, slimy, yuck. Connie giggles and squeals, trying to escape Steven’s arms, as they get covered in more and more muck. Finally he stops rolling, fully coated, plenty of dirt and mud smeared all over the both of them. It's in their clothes, hair, all over their faces and everything in between.
Still giggling despite the cold now shuddering through her Connie looks up at her beautiful fiance hovering over her. Even covered in mud his eyes glimmer with stars as he looks at her. Steven slowly leans down, as if to kiss her muddy face with his dirty mud-flecked lips.
“Boop” Connie boops him on the nose with a single finger, halting him. “We should probably go inside, clean up and warm up.” Another shudder passes through her as the cold ground seeps all warmth from her body.
Seeing her shivering Steven nods and lifts Connie from the mud, hugging her close and keeping her warm as he carries her into the house and straight to the bathroom to clean up.
Even a dreary day can be fun he supposes.
My next entry for @glowweek
Glow week day 2: Surprise
The sun is setting on the horizon as Connie returns home from work. She's exhausted from the long day and can't wait to have some dinner and watch a movie or show with her sweet, wonderful, amazing, boyfriend. He's been such a rock for her during the first few months of her new job and all the stresses that go along with it.
“Hey Biscuit I'm home!” She calls as she enters the house, hanging her keys near the door.
“Hey.” He says quietly.
Connie frowns, usually he greets her with a little more enthusiasm, like an energetic puppy. Instead he's in their small kitchenette, leaning with his elbows on the counter, and staring downward, eyes unfocused.
“Everything alright hon?” She asks as she approaches.
“Hm? Yeah I guess…” a slight scowl crosses his features, “I've just been feeling off lately. My mood's been all over the place. I'm tired, like, all the time. I'm a little achy…”
Trying to lighten the mood Connie replies, “If you were craving weird foods, I'd think you were pregnant!”
Instead of laughing or snickering like she expected, panic starts to crawl across Steven’s face.
“I have been craving weird foods! Oh my stars, I'm pregnant!” Steven starts panicking, breaths picking up and a light flush appears across his face.
“Steven. C’mon. You can’t be pregnant.” Connie deadpans as he continues panicking.
“I'm part gem! Maybe I could be! Anything's possible.” The flush spreads further across his face, he starts shifting around anxiously, “I'm too young to be a mom!”
Connie is at a loss. How does she calm down a completely panicked, half gem man who, apparently, has no idea how pregnancy works?
“Steven.”
He stops his panicked rambling and slight shifting from foot to foot for a moment and looks carefully at her.
“I'm too young to be a mom… but you're not…”
Connie looks at him like he's grown a second head, “Steven, wha-”
“A CAT MOM THAT IS!” He exclaims as he hops out from behind the counter and peels a small calico kitten off his sweatpants, holding her out to Connie.
She snorts, then laughs, practically falling to the floor as she's completely lost in a deep belly laugh. He'd set this whole thing up! Pretending to be sad, then panicking just to reveal… a kitten!? She can't take it, he's such a goof!
He grins at her as he holds up the cute little calico trying to chew on his fingers. Connie stands, as her laughter subsides, and takes the kitten from him to snuggle in her arms.
“Is your leg okay?”
Steven flushes a little in embarrassment, “Oh yeah I'm fine!”
Connie puts one hand on her hip, the now sleeping kitten in the crook of her other arm, “You set up this whole “pregnancy” thing just for a kitten you found and want to keep?”
“Eh, heh…” Steven scratches the back of his head, “I thought I was gonna give it away when she started climbing my leg, it was so hard not to hop around with her little knife fingers digging into my thigh.”
Connie stifles a giggle, imagining what it must have looked like from behind the counter. Steven attempting to remain cool, and sell the bit, with a tiny sharp clawed kitten using him as a scratching post/tree. Unintentionally the kitten wound up helping him sell it in the end.
“I guess we have a new kitty. Hopefully Lion won't get jealous.” She says
“Who do you think surprised me by dropping her in my lap during my morning coffee?”
My own little entry, I wrote up for @glowweek
Day 1 prompt: Glow or Dark
“Steven!” Connie giggled as she held her hand out to help him climb over a large stone outcropping.
“Don't worry I got it!” He exclaims as he holds her hand, a large picnic basket in the other, thick pink and teal flannel blanket folded over one shoulder.
With her help they finish climbing the outcropping, practically halfway up a mountainside at this point, and glance into a large cave opening before them.
“You really want to have a picnic here?” She asks skeptically, snatching the blanket from his shoulder before it can fall. He'd insisted on carrying everything. The picnic basket, blanket and even his guitar strapped across his back. If she'd let him, he probably would have carried her too.
The cave opening is large, like the entrance to some superheroe’s hidden lair. The sunshine from the perfect warm day with its clear skies illuminates the entire opening, putting glistening stalactites and stalagmites on full display, making the cave look like the maw of a giant beast, waiting to clamp down on unsuspecting prey.
“Not here, here! C’mon, you gotta see this!” Steven guides her into the cave, making his way around stalagmites easily twice his height. Steven's not exactly the cute little shorty he used to be anymore, she sighs wistfully at the memories of when she was taller than him. Now grown adults, he towers nearly a full head over her.
“I found this place while hiking a few weeks back. Garnet called me saying I would be coming up on some old gem tech that needed to be taken care of, so when I saw the cave I decided to explore. I found something WAY cooler than old broken gem tech.” He tells her as he guides her further and further into the cave.
Connie just hums as she keeps a close eye on the stalactites above, and another on her beautiful boyfriend. Last thing they need is one of them to fall on his head when he's not paying attention. He guides them between one last pair of pillars into a large opening. Light from the cave entrance shines between the two pillars rising from the floor showing… more cave.
“Uh Steven? It's just the back of the cave.” Connie raises an eyebrow at him as he grins goofily at her.
“Just a second!” He exclaims, then, finding a dry spot on the otherwise slightly damp ground, he takes the picnic basket and sets up a cute little luncheon for them. Taking a light flannel blanket from inside the basket to lay on, he sets out plates, a thermos of tea, and several containers full of sandwiches and fruit.
“Wait. You had a blanket in the basket? Then why'd we bring this one?” She asks, holding up the thick flannel she'd snatched from his shoulder moments earlier.
Taking off his guitar he guides her to sit on the blanket, then relieves her of the heavy flannel and walks back over to the pair of stalagmites they'd squeezed through.
“This is why.” He carefully drapes the flannel around the stalagmites, securing the corners tightly in small cracks in the stone, plunging the two into complete darkness.
Just as Connie is about to scold Steven for making them practically hike up a mountain just to have a picnic in a dark dank cave something catches her eye. A pale blue begins to shine around the bases of the stalagmites near the very back. Gradually the cave is filled with tiny glowing mushrooms! She couldn't see the normally brownish-gray fungi in the light of day, but now, in the dark they show their beauty through bioluminescence.
As the cave is brightened and filled with soft bluish light, the cave walls themselves seem to glow. Like some stones do under blacklight, the cave walls begin to glow a reddish orange hue, tiger striping the walls. The entire space appears to come alive, the two colors mingling, growing and fading with each other, as though breathing.
“Wow!” Connie breaths in amazement.
Steven grins as he settles down onto the blanket with her, unpacking and handing her a sandwich.“Pretty great spot for a picnic right?”
She can't help but giggle as she munches her sandwich, “It's perfect.”
They sit, enjoying each other's company for a short while, basking in the beautiful glow of the cave around them. Steven picks up his guitar and begins strumming, humming a gentle tune to her as she sips on some tea from the thermos.
Connie gazes in complete adoration at the love of her life as the cave around them seems to swirl in a dance all its own to his music. Steven gazes back, his eyes filled with just as much love and adoration for her.
The perfect place for a picnic.
Mostly an excuse to practice with different brushes, and cuz everyone could use some young adult connverse this valentines day
