the bluesy type act I saw yesterday in the afternoon (amazing act, here's an older vid) played When the Levee Breaks at some point. and I never thought about it before, but when he was playing it (a song popularized by Led Zeppelin) i thought to myself, "there's no way zep wrote that, it's gotta be traditional or something right?"

as it turns out it was first recorded in 1929 by Memphis Minnie & Kansas Joe, a couple of black musicians who wrote it about the Great Mississippi Flood two years prior. There's a decent copy of the recording and it sounds really cool, and while I can't say I know the artists or listen to a lot of music of the era, it's always good to see a black woman that was celebrated in music; especially when it's for something other than just vocals.
