A dad and archivist seeking wisdom wherever I may find it. He/him/his. 50 years have I. Think of me as Tumblr's kind uncle.

Opening the Portals of Discovery

I've gone so long without a pinned intro post, I probably don't really need one, but I thought it would be fun to do.

As noted above, I'm an archivist by trade, dad by calling, and a 50 y.o. cishet man. I've been using Tumblr on & off since circa 2009 but I started this blog in 2022. I mostly reblog stuff with an effort to share posts that don't have many notes or are things I find from years and years ago.

My fandoms: Star Trek, Doctor Who, Star Wars, The Muppets

Mostly though I post about great books, great movies, and great music as well as photography, Boston and New England things, and left-leaning politics.

Real Massholes call it The Pike cause we stick your head on a pike if you go below the speed limit in the left lane

Reminds me of the sign in North Carolina that said VIRGINIANS, 95 IS THE ROUTE NUMBER NOT THE SPEED LIMIT!

You know how the American founding fathers didn't like the idea of political parties being a thing, so there's no framework in the constitution to tell parties how to act and as a result they're entirely unregulated and running rampant and just fucking everything up for everyone? And so other later constitutional republics codified political parties as a thing so they have rules they have to follow and procedures and limits and as a result those countries have more diverse political landscapes with more parties representing more points of view and ideas rather than being strangled by America's two party system? That's kinda what TTRPG designers mean when they say that more rules can lead to more player freedom and expression.

“It’s urgent to understand that Trump is not selecting his cabinet as much as he is creating his own reality, and daring our broken institutions like Congress, the Democratic Party and the mainstream media to point out these picks are buck naked as they parade criminally down Fifth Avenue on horseback. The reality-based community — from Maureen Dowd to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries to America’s fireside von Hindenburg in President Joe Biden — are all treating the incoming Trump like another president, when he is busy turning his unreality into our new reality, and ruling as a dictator.”

I'm not upset discussions of Sally Ride these days don't leave out the fact that she was a lesbian and therefore the first known queer person in space (albeit a fact only known after her death), but I hate that the fact that what is left out is that she, while part of the Roger's Commission after Challenger exploded, was the whistleblower who made sure the information for the defects of the O-rings made its way to Richard Feynman, who then famously, publicly, and on camera demonstrated how icy coldness (such as the cold and icy weather the morning before Challenger launched) could critically deform the O-rings used and keep them from forming a seal. This was also only revealed after she died. (x)

Whenever Sally Ride comes up these days among my (overwhelmingly queer) friends, we all acknowledge that she was a lesbian and celebrate what a role model she was not just for girls but for queer kids (and adults) too, but everyone is always surprised when I bring up the whistleblowing thing, which I think is damn shame and a disservice to her legacy.
