And here is the formal debut of Dulcy the Dragon, here established as an eastern dragon and the leader of her own band of Freedom Fighters. While I don’t hate her design by any merits and appreciate how it resembles the dragon Little Animal from Sonic Adventure 2, I will say her redesign isn’t as appealing as the comic wants me to feel.
Dulcy’s design isn’t the easiest to redesign, being the big, ditzy dragon gril she was in the original cartoon, but reimagining her as as regular Mobian-sized sometimes stoic Freedom Fighter from a different continent clearly wasn’t the best decision. I’m sure they could have kept her personality, or more dragon-like features, or hell, her large size that made her easily distinguishable from the group? Its a bit of a departure and, despite how much the editor’s note announces “Dulcy is back!”, it may as well have been a wholly original character instead of a glorified reference to an original SatAM character.
Given some of the crap she went through in the old continuity, it feels to be in pretty awful taste to dismiss her old self as ‘timid’ when trying to hype the new version, I gotta say.
And yeah, to be blunt, Dulcy is one of those things in the reboot that absolutely doesn’t work for me at any level. The redesign itself, for me, is the embodiment of the big problem I had with a lot of the Post-Reboot designs in general in that it plays things way, way too safe when it comes to adhering to the SEGA style, and in this case it pretty much robs Dulcy of all the things that make her unique. I’ll give it its due and say its clever that she’s made to look like the Animal Friend Dragon from Sonic Adventure and that her little foot wings are now a part of her outfit, but that’s it. I wouldn’t expect her to be a 1-1 translation of her old self, but seeing an best partly humanoid dragon squeezed down into a bog standard Mobian design is a severe downgrade given that her being a large, mythological creature was one of those things that helped her stand out.
On a lesser note… I hate to be an anal retentive dweeb about this, but if you’re going to assign her to a Freedom Fighter group wouldn’t it make more sense for her to be a part of the Avalon Freedom Fighters? Like, even getting past her being based off a Western dragon (and before anyone gets into it, I’m aware that Eastern ‘dragons’ are not the same thing even as Dulcy has been redesigned to more closely resemble on), ‘Dulcy’ doesn’t exactly scream of a name that comes from a place that is Mobius’ equivalent of Asia.
It all just feels ill-conceived.
