Oh Shit OPINIONS -- EVERYBODY PANIC!

I think my problem with Tumblr, and I suppose the world in general, is that so many people are so fucking extreme about EVERYTHING.

And my therapist has commented on my ability consider all sides of a situation and make judgments based on that view as opposed to a narrower one. She posits that's why my writing reaches and interests people. I have an affinity for empathy.

I just guess it's hard for me to understand why it's so impossible to comprehend that not everyone believes one fucking way about things.

Most issues are not simple. They don't lend themselves to one point of view. This world is complex. It demands careful consideration and not hastily made assumptions.

And I'm not saying I'm perfect. I make assumptions about people and situations like everybody. But I try not to. And when I do fall into that trap I try my best to dig my way out of it. And then I admit my mistakes and apologize for them if need be.

I feel like it's such a concentrated problem on tumblr because there are a lot of band-wagoners on this site. And I'm not talking about band-wagoners in the sense of fandoms. It doesn't matter if you start to get into something because it's popular. That's not the issue. I'm talking about the people who see reports of EXTREME and biased information and spread this information without considering it fully. Often times the information isn't exactly factual. But people spread it, out of guilt or zeal or misplaced anger.

This happens in the real world too. It happens all over the place with all kinds of situations/topics/people. And it pisses me off to no end.

Because is it so fucking hard to admit your perception is not the be-all-end-all? Is it so humiliating to put yourself in someone else's shoes that our first instinct is to attack them instead?

Can we all just calm the fuck down and admit that the universe is not out to get us? In all likely hood, the universe could give a flying fuck about human existence in general. And that doesn't change the fact that this world is cruel to certain kinds of people. That doesn't change. But if we would all -- all of us -- stop overreacting and harming each other in that overreaction, the world would probably end up being a much better place.

So be the better person. Stop being the problem. And calm. The fuck. Down.

You should all know that my therapist told me it's perfectly acceptable to invest emotions in narratives and to hold up fictional characters as idols worth emulating*.

Oh and also that blogging and being part of an online community is perfectly healthy. In fact, she encourages me to use tumblr to talk about my problems and make connections with others.

SO HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?????

*as long as your concern for said narratives and characters doesn't overshadow your concern for yourself.

So I was looking through NBCHannibal Tumblr...

Right, so I was stalking looking through the nbchannibal tumblr, because that’s what you do at 1am and i have an unhealthy obsession with them, and I saw something rather odd…

Apparently the NBCHannibal Tumblr

Used to use

Normal tags

(Will’s head was on fire in this gif)

And then, three weeks ago, we get this

And this

And this

AND THIS

It’s like

Something

Just

Came over

Them

And I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I’ve just discovered that three weeks is the critical amount of Tumblr exposure necessary to produce observably changes in humor, caps use, tagging, vernacular, and neologisms.  Further tests need to be conducted, and they are currently under observation to determine if symtoms are increasing and if the condition is permanent.

Stay tuned.

OMFG.

how does one become popular on tumblr?

Avatar

This is an interesting question for many, many reasons.

The first and most important thing to establish is this: popularity and success are relative.

I have 332 followers as of this very second. There are plenty of tumblr users out there who would not consider this, as you said, “popular.” On the other hand, there are tumblr users out there who would consider this very popular. I try not to look at things either way. My follower count, to me, is not an indication of my worth or my quality as a human being or a blogger. My worth is inherent — as is yours. That’s important. It’s very easy to get wrapped up in numbers, and while its fine to be aware of numbers, it’s unhealthy to rely on them too heavily.

That said, there are ways to maximize your experience as a tumblogger. Tumblr relies upon the creation of communities. This should be the goal — to establish a community. That starts by interacting with other users and your followers. Talk to people. Shoot people you like messages. If they don’t respond, oh well, but it’s important to put yourself out there.

Don’t try to be something you’re not. Your blog is ultimately for you. So do what you want with it. Don’t feel like you’re confined by the limits of what’s popular. Do something new. Do something you’re good at and proud of. Talk about your life. Make your blog reflect you in the best way possible. I started out primarily using this blog for writing purposes. Then I began posting my photo manipulations and reviews of films and analyses of television programs. I didn’t do this because I thought it would get me more followers. I did it because I’m interested in those things. I created them and I’m proud of them — regardless of how many notes they received.

That’s another thing: Do not, under any circumstances, be afraid to create. Put what you make out there. Sure, you might come back to it in a few years and go “oh GOD why did I MAKE THAT?” but you’ll learn and grow from the experience. Don’t worry about making a fool of yourself. Sometimes the best thing you can be is silly.

So, are you a musician? Post your music. A writer? Post your poetry or your meta. A weirdo? Slap those weird thoughts into a text post and set them free into the world! Reblogging is fine. Reblogging is wonderful, even. Don’t stop reblogging. But know that people respond to original content. It reveals much more about the person who created it than a reblog does.

Now, if it’s a question of how to get your posts seen by the widest possible audience? That’s another ballgame. Let’s talk about tags. Tagging is important. When you tag a reblog it’s for your own organizational purposes as those don’t show up in the tags. But, original posts do. So tag them well. Additionally, an original post will only show up in the first five tags it’s labeled with. So remember that.

I will leave you to ponder what I’ve said here, but I think the best piece of advice I can give you is trite and cliche and universally relevant: Be who you are. I guarantee you, people will respond to the genuine you. It’s hard to let go of your inhibitions and exist without the fear of judgment nipping at your heels. So expect that judgment. Embrace that judgment. Know that judgment can’t hurt you and pretty soon it won’t be able to anymore.

One of the best things I ever did for myself was to stop self-deprecating. Whenever I get the urge to call myself a freak or a loser or pathetic — I twist it around. I flip my hair like Beyonce and proclaim that I am too fabulous for this world. Is it a lie? Maybe. Do I really believe it? Maybe not. But after a while, the positivity rubs off on you. You start to realize that maybe you’re not infallible, but you’re certainly worth loving.

So love yourself. Let others love you.

And they will.

Also, really honestly, don’t sweat numbers. Get to a place where you can validate your own actions. Relying upon the validation of others never pans out well in the end. (Trust me.) Be proud because you should be, not because someone tells you to be.

Good luck with the blog. I believe in you.

A Daily Conversation With Myself

I mean, do I really HAVE to take a shower this morning?

Tori, you're super gross. Take a shower.

I know, but I spend so much time in the shower! It's such a waste. I could be on Tumblr!

Because sitting on Tumblr isn't a waste of your time... how?

Shut up! Tumblr's great! THEY ACCEPT ME FOR THE PSYCHO I AM.

That isn't even relevant to this argument. You have to leave for class in 15 minutes. Go get in the shower.

....No.

What are you gonna do with your hair then? Your hair looks super greasy and it's short. You don't have a lot of leeway with it.

Ummmmmm.... hat?

*sigh* whatever.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay Hat!

omg can just I express how much I HATE these posts?

  1. Reblogging this post won’t change the fact that 17 teens commit suicide every day.
  2. Not reblogging doesn’t mean you’re heartless, it just means you know this post is meaningless and don’t want to bother with it.
  3. Guilt trip posts are the worst posts on Tumblr.
  4. It degenerates into an endless circlejerk of “I CARE!!!” and becomes more of a trend than anything else (this post has over 600,000 notes)

Posts like these are everywhere (reblog if you hate cancer, reblog if you aren’t homophobic, blah blah blah). They’re so stupid and pointless. Of course anyone who isn’t a sociopath cares!

I’m not trying to guilt the people who do reblog these, but for the love of all things good and holy, don’t try to shame people into reblogging a silly little post that won’t actually change anything (“REBLOG IF U HAVE A HEART,” “IF YOU DON’T REBLOG THIS THAN UNFOLLOW ME RIGHT NOW,” “ONLY A MONSTER WOULDN’T REBLOG THIS”).

This needs more notes

Tumblr is getting as bad as Facebook with this problem.

I have a rule that, regardless of the post, if anyone at all tells me to reblog something -- I refuse to reblog it.

If you have to instruct people to perpetuate something, it's probably not worth the effort. It will more than likely change nothing and help no one because it's being spread by a follow-the-leader mentality.
