Fandom’s anthem.
You should all know that my therapist told me it's perfectly acceptable to invest emotions in narratives and to hold up fictional characters as idols worth emulating*.
Oh and also that blogging and being part of an online community is perfectly healthy. In fact, she encourages me to use tumblr to talk about my problems and make connections with others.
SO HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?????
*as long as your concern for said narratives and characters doesn't overshadow your concern for yourself.
that sad feeling when you have a fandom that none of your friends are into so you just kinda sit there and sadly fan about it by yourself because there is no one to share the excitement with
But see, I don't have this problem.
Because I'm an annoying little shit and I'll just go on and on about shows that my friends don't watch until one of two things happen:
1. They tell me they're going to kick me in the vagina if I don't stop harping on these plot lines and characters and actors that they give zero fucks about.
or
2. They start watching the show.
60% of the time it works
every time.
I think I love you after reading this wonderful tunalock commentary. Thank you for that by the way. I agree that our fandom, as any fandom really, has people in it that are sometimes beyond disgusting, but I don't think I have ever seen a fandom get as much hate as the sherlock fandom does and it just makes me sad because I just wanted to enjoy this really amazing show online with some people who share my enthusism for it. Thanfully ignoring the hate is easy most of the time
I love you! And I agree with you COMPLETELY.
Sherlock appeals to me for a lot of different reasons, but the actual quality of the production is a big one for me. I’m hoping to go into the film industry and eventually, if I’m lucky, write and direct my own feature films. And Sherlock is utterly inspiring to me. Every aspect of the show aligns perfectly with my visual and literary tastes. I’m in awe of what they’re able to do.
And fandoms are fun! They’re a community where you can share your interest and enthusiasm without being labeled a dork or laughed at. Like, I have a lot of serious respect for the crew members, the writers, the actors, and the entire production team. I would never intentionally do anything that makes anyone uncomfortable with regards to the show. So why should I suffer when someone else doesn’t extend the same courtesy that I do? It’s the same mentality as punishing the whole class when one person doesn’t do their homework. It’s illogical. It’s fucking stupid is what it is.
Everyone has their own ideas about what’s “obscene” as well.
It’s funny to me, because, in the United States at least, literally the only thing considered obscene enough to be silenced or removed from public consumption is child pornography. That’s it. Anything else is fair game. Some people may not agree with that loose ruling, but The Supreme Court hath spoken.
That said, there’s no law in the Sherlock fandom that insists you have to venture into the “erotic” or “alternate universe” or “crossover” sides of the fandom. I’m pretty tame as Sherlockians go. But I believe whole-heartedly in healthy and respectful artistic expression. If you wanna draw a Sherlock and Watson as mermaids and depict them fertilizing one another’s eggs (and I’m sure this has been done somewhere) go for it! I give no fucks! I probably won’t be hanging that artwork on my wall anytime soon, but that’s just me.
I guess people insisting that a Sherlock AU or crossover is “invading” their fandom or affronting their sensibilities is ridiculous to me. Maybe that really is just the American in me, but whatevs. I see stuff on the television that I would rather dunk my hands in boiling water than watch. (FOX news anyone?) But you know what, I don’t call in to FOX and complain about them taking over my TV with their bullshit that I don’t want to hear.
I flip the goddamn channel and find something else to watch. It’s not a hard concept. I don’t understand why people on the internet think the content around them should be catered to their every whim. The internet is a free forum for ideas, no matter how silly, ridiculous, or personally offensive you find that material to be.
If I can ignore the assholes in the Sherlock fandom, surely people who aren’t even Sherlockians can do the same.
Sorry. I just went on another rant. Haha. That’s kind of what I do.
But really, you are lovely and thank you for your message. I super appreciate it!
New video!
Why Do We Ship Real People?
Soooo this is a thing that happens! WHY. Let’s find out!
I know I’m probably gonna tread on some toes and rustle some jimmies with this video, but I thought it was an interesting point of discussion and to the best of my knowledge no-one who has been on the receiving end of Real Person Shipping has ever been overly vocal about it, so thought I’d throw in some perspective!
Let me know your thoughts :)
Hope you enjoy and/or learn! Share if either of those things apply :)
Reblaggin’ for the late party!
i think the two most important rules of fandom are
- don’t judge the fandom by the fan
- don’t judge the fan by the fandom
no, calling the sherlock fandom out on their shit isn’t rude
you know what’s fucking rude
- insulting people who aren’t in your fandoms (“hipsters”)
- insulting people who don’t ship your ship
- making the legalizing of gay marriage all about your stupid fucking otp
- insulting people who don’t like your favorite actor
- constantly bashing a show because it’s not your favorite (see: elementary)
- bashing actors WHO WORK ON SAID SHOW solely because of gender or race
I agree. It isn't rude to call someone out on any of those things because those are the ways of an asshole.
That said, those things aren't exclusively problems of the Sherlock fandom. Lots of fandoms have members who exhibit the qualities of assholes and many of these same issues exist in other fandoms.
I'm not defending Sherlockians who do this shit, because it pisses me off too. I'm just saying that there are a lot of Sherlockians (me for instance) who don't do these things and who are just as annoyed as you are about them happening.
Fandoms have their good parts and their nasty parts. We all know this to be true. Call out whoever you want, but remember that generalizing an entire group of people can be just as destructive as the behavior you're seeking to curb.
So I wear an apron at my place of employment and I want to get some buttons to put on it. One of my coworkers has this stupid button that says "My other ride is a unicorn" and I need to top her. Not sexually.
Oh god I've been reading way too much Johnlock fanfiction lately.
Anyway, I was thinking fandom buttons. Obviously, because I'm always thinking of fandoms and almost always thinking of fandom BUTTS so... the connection is easily made. I'm running low on funds (I GET PAID THIS FRIDAY BITCHES WOOT!) so I may have to make some tough decisions about which designs to buy and y'all are gonna help me.
This is my blogging though process
I made a thing…
This is perfect in so many ways.
Who are the Fandoms?
They're online royalty.
If the internet was US Weekly they would always be on the cover.
That one there? That's Supernatural. They're one of the weirdest fandoms you will ever meet. Damian followed a Supernatural Blog last year...
They asked me how to spell "Wincest."
And that little one? That's Sherlock. They're totally crazy because their show runner invented psychological torture. The Sherlockians know everybody's business. They deduce everything about everyone.
That's why their fanon's so big. It's full of deductions.
And fanaticism takes a virtual form in Doctor Who. Don't be fooled, because they may seem like your typical ship-crazy, feels-having, Sci-fi fandom. But, in reality, they are so much more than that.
They're the time lords. The stars. The other two are just their little workers.
Doctor Who
How do I even begin to explain Doctor Who?
BORED AS HELL HERE HAVE SOME SHIPS
Shipper Challenge
SHIPPER CHALLENGE
Pick your top ten ships without reading the questions.
1: Ron/Hermione – Harry Potter
2: Sherlock/John – Sherlock 3: Shawn/Juliet – Psych 4: Logan/Veronica – Veronica Mars 5: Harry/Luna – Harry Potter 6: Ezra/Aria – Pretty Little Liars 7: Sherlock/Molly – Sherlock 8: Hazel/Augustus – The Fault in Our Stars 9: Q/Lacey – Paper Towns 10: Amy/Rory – Doctor Who
1: Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6?
The absolute minute they were on screen together.
2: Have you ever read a FanFiction about 2?
HahahahhHAHAHAHAHHAHAH OOOH hoooo. Sorry. Yes. The answer is yes.
3: Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr avatar?
Of course
4: If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?
They aren’t actually together sooooooo. Also, I mean, it wouldn’t shock me in the slightest. I kind of ship them on a casual basis. I don’t really think they’d actually work out too well. I just love their dynamic and wouldn’t be upset if there was something something happening.
5: Why is 1 so important?
Excuse you. Why ISN’T one important? They were the first ship I ever had. They are perfect for each other. It is wonderful. The END.
6: Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?
Serious as fuck. When John Green said that in the Paper Towns screenplay he wrote Lacey and Q got together I about had a heart attack. And then I wept because it was never going to be made.
7: Out of all of your ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?
I would say Hazel and Augustus. And I offer no evidence of this fact it’s just what I think.
8: Out of all of the ships, which ship has the strongest bond?
Sherlock and John. They are committed to each other regardless of romantic involvement. They would sacrifice anything for the other.
9: How many times have you read/watched 10’s fandom?
Just once through New Who, but I’m trying to gear myself up to go all the way back to the beginning.
10: Which ship has lasted the longest?
Well if you want to get technical, Amy/Rory because I mean. 2000 fucking years is a long ass time. But if you’re asking which one have I shipped the longest then it’s Ron/Hermione
11: How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up?
Twice I think. Superficially. But they can’t keep their paws off each other.
12: If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8?
OH GOD. THIS IS THE MOST HORRIBLE QUESTION ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH. IT ISN’T EVEN FAIR TO ANSWER BECAUSE ONE OF THE COUPLES IS CANCER CRIPPLED GOD DAMMIT OBVIOUSLY SHERLOCK AND JOHN WOULD SURVIVE.
13: Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?
Only from themselves.
14: Is 4 still together?
They better fucking be.
15: Is 10 canon?
Yerp. I tend to be a very canon shipper most of the time. Call me boring.
16: If all ten ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?
I mean, let’s be honest. Sherlock/John. You’ve got an ex-soldier and a virtual sociopath versus a bunch of very very moral characters. I think we all know who’s coming out on top. And that was not a “topping” pun. 17: Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship?
Ginny? J.K. Rowling? Canon? Luna/Harry isn’t a super popular ship to begin with, but I always liked them. I thought there was a sort of peace to their interaction with each other.
18: Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond?
Hermione/Ron. It was my first ship. It is THE ship to end ALL ships. Screw Harmony. Screw Dramione. Screw Harron. It’s Heron. Forever. Always. The End.
19: Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page?
I don’t. There aren’t nearly enough Psych fans on Tumblr.
20: If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all up forever, which ship would you sink?
Sherlock/Molly. They would never last anyway. Le sigh.
Grrrrrrrr I really wish that everyone in the world would just be awesome
So done with this night. Do you ever have those people you follow who you used to really love?
and you used to try to talk to them and be friends with them
even though they actively ignored you
but they still had a great blog so you sucked it up and kept following them
and then you watched them... slowly.... inch by inch... turn into a massive judgmental asshole?
Because that's where I am right now.
This person made several posts about how stupid the sherlock fandom was and mocking them and laughing at them. And like, I get it. Some people get WAY too invested in something as silly as an award.
Like, I was disappointed and a made a little post about it. And then I moved on. Because there's nothing I can do about it.
But to openly mock people for liking something? And I'm not talking about the "fans" who stalk the actors or invade their privacy or tweet stupidly angry death threats at moffat and gatiss for not making Johnlock canon. Because I don't consider those people to be fans. When you talk about the Sherlock fandom, you're talking about the people who respect Sherlock. Not the people who take it a step too far.
I guess I just don't understand why a fandom doesn't have the right to be slightly peeved about something like that. It happened with Harry Potter at the MTV movie awards every year and no one made fun of the Harry Potter fandom. Because yeah it was annoying to see something you liked take a hit. It's always like that. It has nothing to do with the quality of what won. I really like Kevin Costner as a matter of fact. It's just about wanting something you're passionate about to get recognition. It's validation. Everybody wants validation.
I understand that sometimes people who call themselves fans can be radical and overzealous. But those people don't categorize a fandom. The crazies are a small piece, not the whole damn pie.
So yeah. I thought Sherlock should have won at least one award. So sue me. I don't know. I wasn't even that bothered until I saw this guy's posts. He literally wrote something that said something along the lines of:
"Now before I mention to people that I'm a Sherlock or a Doctor Who fan I'm gonna wait and see what kind of fan they are."
I mean the other day he fucking complained about NERDFIGHTERS. Said that he used to be one but that they started getting annoying by taking the "nerds are allowed to be apologetically enthusiastic about something" too seriously.
And I'm just sitting here. Wondering if he realizes how much of a hypocritical asshole he is.
How judgmental do you have to be???? I understand staying away from the dark parts of fandoms. I don't go near people who put shit in Hank Green and John Green's mailboxes and think it's okay. I don't go near people who stalk and who are irrational.
But to assume that all people are like that before even letting them speak? What's wrong with this guy??? I just don't get it. I get lighthearted fun at a fandom's expense. The posts about people "patting the Sherlock fandom on the back" are hilarious and they get the point across that the fandom has exploded a little bit right now.
But it's harmless fun. I'm not against banter. I just had some on my facebook status with a friend about the whole thing. And it was fine. Because we fucking respect each other and we know that we both like to argue for arguments sake and that no one is gonna get their feelings hurt over something as frivolous as a television award show.
I don't know this is big and rambling and bleh. I just am really mad that this guy is a douche. I don't understand people like that. I just don't.
Friends don't let friends spiral into fandom feels.
dear god
I love Dr. Seuss books!
This is why I love the Star Trek fandom.
I loved when Augustus Waters said this to Alaska! It was the best part of Paper Towns! Hank Green is such a good writer!
Best line in all homestuck.
this is my FAVORITE part of Friendship is Magic!
And that's why the 14th Doctor is my favorite. Whovians for the win!
I Have This New Rule For Myself
Whenever I post something about a celebrity/actor/generallyawesomehumanbeing,
I stop.
I imagine that said person is reading what I'm posting.
I imagine what their reaction could be, whether it be flattered, uncomfortable, appreciative, upset, or to laugh humorously, pat me on the back and say "well done!"
And I try to tailor my posts accordingly. If I think something is a liiiiiittle too creepy and verging on "terrifying" as apposed to "obviously a joke," I edit it.
And it makes me feel like a better fan. I have a hard time expressing admiration and respect without sounding absolutely nuts and this rule helps.
And I definitely feel bad when I break it.
Like the other day when I insulted Kaley Cuoco, I feel bad about that. And I know she'll never ever read it, but I feel bad just the same, ONLY because I had no right to criticize her intelligence. I have no qualms about saying I find her BBT character annoying and unfunny, because that's a judgement based on my perception of her performance. I'm critiquing her work, not her personality. And that's a different ballgame.
I feel even worse when I break it in the opposite direction, meaning when I overstep my boundaries when speaking about someone I admire.
Like, take this David Tennant appreciation thing I've got going on. I think he is a BRILLIANT actor, is incredibly attractive, has got charm out the ASS (from what I've seen,) and is all around one bad ass mother fucker.
I would never in a million years consciously disrespect him, his family, or his privacy. There is, however, an undeniable longing for knowledge when it comes to admiration. Would I like to know his life story? Sure! If he was willing to be in a room with me long enough to tell it, I would be eternally grateful. That being said, I wouldn't tread where he didn't want me to. I wouldn't ask about information he left out unless it seemed appropriate and vital to the 'story.'
He has a right to his secrets just like we all do.
Yes, he's in the public eye. Yes, he made the choice to be in the public eye. That doesn't mean he ceases to be a human being. And I'm not trying to preach to anyone because I think the majority of Tumblypoos are incredibly respectful and lighthearted in their fandoms. I just wanted to write down some thoughts about the whole thing.
Odds are, if I'm following my rule, anything I post about a public figure on this blog is something I would be okay with that actual public figure seeing.
David Tennant is allowed to be aware that I am in AWE of his talent.
He is also allowed to be aware that sometimes his existence makes me flop around like a dying squid because I'm overcome with FEELS.
He should ALSO KNOW that my admiration tends to manifest itself in anger, so when I yell at The Tenth Doctor to "STOP IT. JUST STOP IT RIGHT NOW. LOOK AT WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO ME!" It is the sincerest compliment I can give.
And that's fine. IF he somehow bizarrely stumbles upon this I am FINE with him thinking I'm a little bit loony and a little bit fangirly and hopefully a whole lot more appreciative of what he does.
Also, Kaley Cuoco is allowed to know I'm not fond of Penny. I doubt she would even care.
The internet is a weird thing that can be both private and open to the whole world. And you gotta ride that line. You gotta find where you're comfortable and where your middle ground is.
Anyway. Enough blabber. I gotta go get ready for a thing.
