The Proclaimers - Over and Done With
In keeping with my theme of falling in love with artists from the 90's far too late in the game, I have recently become obsessed with The Proclaimers.
And specifically with this song.
The only Proclaimers' songs that I knew before recently were "On my way" and "500 miles."
Now, "500 miles" has been a huge part of my life in a lot of different ways. When I used to be religious I was in a youth group. For a good portion of my childhood that youth group was all I had. I was depressed and anxious and occasionally agoraphobic, but having a community helped me immensely. In said youth group we use to have silly dance routines that we would do to various songs. One was to "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" by They Might Be Giants and another was to "500 Miles." I took such joy in those routines. I just got to be silly and weird and not feel like I was isolated for it. Hearing that song has always made me feel safe and happy and like I can make it through whatever I'm facing.
And then of course that same song became a staple in nerdfighteria. I cannot tell you how emotional I became when Hank and John ended their show singing it during The Tour de Nerdfighting. I nearly cried because I was just so unbelievably happy. Here were my idols singing this anthem from my childhood.
Now, having recently become a whovian, it takes on even more significance. David Tennant is my favorite doctor and is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. His talent and modesty and tenacity and upbringing inspire me so much. I may have quite a few "celebrity crushes" but I can count the number of famous people who truly make me want to better myself on one hand.
This is a completely pointless and rambling entry about The Proclaimers. In conclusion: I like them, and they have followed me throughout my life, and that makes me happy.
