for @glove23′s birthday week 2023 — PROTAGONEIL from TENET (2020)
cute inverted husbands for @glove23
do you think neil’s hands are in his pockets ‘cause he’s so used to walking holding hands with the protagonist in the future but right now he can’t so he does this to not get distracted and slip?
if i didn't before i sure do now--

Summary: Neil finds himself captured with the Protagonist on Andrei Sator's yacht. This wasn't supposed to happen.
I come straight from reading this story https://archiveofourown.org/works/30049236
and help I need to gush about it! Fake married! Opera! Emotional rifts! Protagoneil babies! I can't even begin to imagine the beauty of said baby 😻 Nothing says "hope" like a little one! And yes, Neil, we know that you love him and that you always want to have David's back, but you were a lunatic for taking this job. Oh my god, can you imagine the Protagonist as Neil's pregnancy progresses? A bundle of joy, angst and worry all rolled up into one maybe?
gush away, anon! i myself was a blubbering mess at the end of the fic lmao
and yes, there’s just something incredibly beautiful about a protagoneil baby. i’m not usually inclined towards pregnancy plots and kidfics unless they’re already part of canon itself, but protagoneil with children just feels so natural to me. it raises the stakes and shines on their personal hopes so much more, as well as underlining the narrative contrast with sator. they’re bringing a child into a world that they’re determined to save, as opposed to sator who already knows he’s gonna destroy the world and had a child anyway.
also since when neil is not a lunatic? 🤣 david’s gonna have his hands full trying to appeal to neil’s saner side and convince him to sit out field missions. wheeler and ives are already backing off from this latest spousal drama. tenet’s medical and logistics are both simultaneously horrified and joyful at the baby revelation.
neil ends up in multiple tea sessions with barbara, and also alternating between helping to babysit her own toddler son and concocting even crazier plans for his fellow agents (”okay fine i can’t go out there, so you get to do this for me instead”)
thank u @nooowestayandgetcaught for sending us all down into this tenet baby spiral!
OH MY GOD YOU GUYS ARE SO NICE THANK YOU JSEHSJSJ
You’re only halfway there. I’ll see you at the beginning.
your post about post movie protagoneil just threw me into a whirlpool of protagoneil thoughts. because imagine when david manages to save neil, when he first time holds him knowing that he is safe, that they have a future ahead of them? knowing that the angsty route didn't come true for them, that they don't have to live their lives grieving that they've lost their most beloved? i am very very soft.
since i myself cannot imagine a situation where the david won’t try his hardest to find a way to save neil when they meet again, the only hope left is that he would indeed succeed in doing so. because otherwise, he himself will literally die trying, which brings us back to angsty route 😭 BUT YES OF COURSE THEY DESERVE ALL THE HAPPY ENDINGS IN THE WORLD THE SOFTEST AND MOST JOYFUL
i can just imagine the sheer overwhelming relief as they hold each other in their arms, like they could just not believe the universe is kind to them this time around. that “what’s happened, happened” is thwarted for once, cosmic forces aligning with the depths of their love for and faith in each other. that they can save the world and not feel like their souls are torn apart for it. i can just imagine them hanging on to each other for dear life upon this realization, breaking down in floods of tears, but this time in pure joy and happiness instead of the expected grief.
anyway we all deserve a good dose of protagoneil fix-it now and then, and i simply have to rec @nooowestayandgetcaught‘s and @skadizzleross‘s beautiful fics right here and here. their reunions against death feel like such a balm to the heart, i’m crying for a thousand years
thank you for the rec 😭 you're so nice

Summary: While still in Mumbai, Neil and The Protagonist lay low.
“Neil is a slob. He’s just rolls in every day, doing what he does. His first suit that you see him in, in India, is this linen suit. Where you see it’s just been aged and worn down, as if he’s never cleaned it. It’s just like he wears it every day. And that’s the real Neil. He’s got the skinny little tie that he ties like a schoolboy. But then, when he goes posing as a wealthy businessman, he takes on a different persona. Yet, a little bit of Neil still peeks through. So, you’ve got a double-breasted suit, which is perfectly tailored and everything. But if you look at the fabric, there’s a little playfulness to it. So, that character is still there, even though he’s pretending to be somebody else.”
