THE BATMAN (2022) dir. Matt Reeves
Batman isn’t a mask; It’s a leash. In this essay I will—
A lot of the people asked for the essay, so I’ll deliver! Maybe not well, but I’ll deliver it.
Vigilantism is something far removed from our idea of consequence; Everyone has their own interpretations and ideals about what justice is, and what justice means to them.
For some, it’s law. For others, it’s something useful.
Bruce Wayne lives in a society where white, rich, privileged men get to overpass law because they can own law.
Bruce is systematically powerful enough to ruin anyone’s life extremely easy; Bruce chooses not to do that everyday.
He has an outlet to exert his own version of what justice is. Batman is handmade, and painful, and deeply, catastrophically personal. He’s a victim that fights for victims.
For a city like Gotham, Batman is the most ethical form of law you could get. A lot of people confuse vigilante justice as evening the scores between one who was wronged, and one who wrongs, without the red tape getting in the way.
I’ve seen a lot of media adaptations that present Bruce, or Batman, or both, as the embodiment of Gotham, but I don’t think that’s it.
I think Bruce fights everyday not to be like Gotham. That’s why he gets punished for it.
He’s not a symptom. He’s an antidote.

au where kara crash lands like a year after clark and the kents pass her off as clark’s teen birth mom who just escaped a bad family situation
“this is Kara she just escaped a cult which is why she doesn’t know who Jesus is” would absolutely work on small town america. trust me I’m a professor.
I will not be enslaved again

People always fixate on Batman saying his name's Batman, but we need to talk about Clark.
He said both his names. If we're taking this as "Bruce Wayne is the mask." Then we can take this as "Clark and Kal are the same person. He sees no difference between his human self and his alien self."
Remember, Clark Kent is the person. Superman is the customer service persona.

kon: robin my best friend robin. did i mention we're besties
(+ meme ver)
based on this panel from superboy and the ravers #8. i just think its funny that hes going around telling people this (after only having just met tim in wf3 and he also only just met bart in the prev issue so this is pre-yj), only to struggle to become robins friend in the early yj comics. in his defense, tims like one of the first friends his age he met at the time. also double funny because this is from the "batman and robin are urban myths" era so like. they never believed him in the first place.

Baby's first bat family. Sorry, there wasn't a Black Bat.
My favourite bit is that Steph's epithet is "Daring Defender" while Tim's is "Daring Detective".
