So many people who get periods are like “Ugh it sucks that having a menstrual cycle makes you almost die every month” like no that’s not normal you need to go to the doctor

If any of your symptoms go beyond “just like, super annoying ugh whatever” levels you should probably go see a doctor about that

You should not feel so depressed you want to die, you should not be getting mood swings so bad that you become violent, your cramps should not be so bad that you can’t get out of bed, your period should not last more than a week, you should not be losing so much blood that you feel dizzy. Go to the doctor.

(Cleveland Clinic & Mayo Clinic are both pretty good about using gender-neutral language in their articles).

Project 2025 would ban anything the far right considers pornography. The far right considers anything queer-positive to be pornography, and they WILL encode that into law if given just a TINY bit more power.

Have queer fanfic (or trad published literature) or pics of your transition, or of two men kissing, saved to your hard drive? If the GOP get their way, you'd be guilty of possession of pornography. Did you share any of it? You'd be guilty of distribution of pornography. Have a sweet coming of age story with a queer protagonist? That'd be child pornography.

Even now, states are trying to make it a crime to be openly queer in public (by, among other things, classifying dressing as the "wrong gender" anyplace kids might see as a sex crime against children). Oh, and Florida tried (and thankfully failed) to impose the death penalty for the above.

This is just one example of the horrors awaiting us if the project comes to fruition.

And the far right is already screaming that any adult who mentions around kids that queer people exist is "grooming" children. Wear your Pride shirt past a playground? You're now a child groomer. Think they won't put that into law if allowed? You're naive.

The GOP currently controls the Supreme Court (which is how they overturned Roe v. Wade) and has a majority in one branch of congress. Imagine what will happen nationwide with the GOP controlling every branch of government, including supermajoroties in both houses of Congress.

Oh, and top GOP officials have also announced their desire to NUKE Gaza, so don't come at me with, "but I can't vote blue because Biden..." Or tell me how you think Gaza would somehow be better off with Trump and the GOP.

In France, the left and center joined together--even though they disagree vehemently on many issues (get two leftists together and they'll have three positions on any issue)--to stop the far right from totally taking over, because the one thing they ALL agree on is that fascists dictatorships are BAD.

Much the same with the UK finally kicking out their own neo-fascist party, the Torries, to install 400 Labour MPs. Not everyone loves Labour's policies, but virtually everyone with a brain cell recognizes that the Torries are fascists, and that FASCISM BAD.

"Every election, they tell us this is the most important election if our lives!" Yeah, because each election over the past several decades has been more important than the one before, until we are now at a tipping point between remaining a fucked up oligarchy with SOME resemblance to freedom, and an outright neo-fascist military dictatorship.

Trump has literally stated publicly his intent to criminalize dissent, use US armed forces against protesters (Kent State, but multiply it by thousands), purge all agencies and stuff them with those personally loyal to him, and use the DOJ to go after anyone he perceives as a threat to his political power, among other things.

And remember the things he did in office, like pulling the teeth of federal workplace protections for queer folks (which Biden reatored).

I don't care if you don't like Biden or Harris. Neither do I. But the alternative is Trump, and anyone telling you not to vote in 2024, or to vote third party, is rooting for Trump, and for Project 2025. Anyone telling you not to vote does not give one single solitary flying fuck about vulnerable populations in the US or anywhere else in the world.

"You're just being an alarmist!" Right. Like I was being alarmist when I predicted the failed Jan 6 coup attempt. Like I was being alarmist when I said the GOP would try to use control over SCOTUS to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Fucking vote.

As much as I do love boobs, they are entirely a social construct. I really think we need a strong revival in the free the nipple movement because the concept of topless nudity existing for some people but not others is frankly insane. The breasts of fat men, men who have gynecomastia, are allowed to be seen, despite being more or less the same anatomy as afab people with breasts. In order for an afab trans person to be topless, they must get a surgery to remove breast tissue BUT if a cis woman gets the same surgery (double masectomy) for health or personal reasons while still identifying as a woman they can NOT be topless! The enforcement of topless nudity laws is unclear, based largely on opinion and used selectively to hurt minority groups (see: the trans woman who was denied a legal gender marker change and decided to go topless as a result, then was arrested for being topless despite the fact that in the eyes of the law she was a man)

This is so fucking scary.

Not only are abortions now illegal after six weeks (a time when eighty-five percent of people aren’t aware they’re pregnant), but any private citizen can sue people who violate this law for ten thousand dollars. People who can be sued includes anyone who “aided and abetted” the abortion—including not only doctors and healthcare providers, but the people like the fucking uber driver who drove you to the clinic.

And the Supreme Court has done nothing about it.

I am afraid.

I am angry.

I am in disbelief that a group of people, with full knowledge of the terrifying consequences of their actions, pooled their resources, wealth, and knowledge to launch this assault on abortion rights. Displaying a dearth of empathy, they plotted around Roe v. Wade by employing private citizens as bounty hunters, people they will pay thousands of dollars to report abortions.

They launched a modern-day witch hunt.

It’s hard to sort out my emotions. I feel like a pile of autumn leaves, whipped into a tornado of glacial reds and frothing golds and everything in between, unable to separate the colors, the movement, the chaos. But there are three things I do know.

I am a woman—a human being.

My rights are beginning to rot.

And I am furious.

I know when we talk about ~men writing women~ we usually focus on the “she breasted boobily” variety but can we just acknowledge that in The Sound of Music, a mother abbess sends one of her young, naive charges to go and work for a rich, single older man and when said young naif flees back to the abbey and refuses to speak to anyone about what happened to her except to say “I can’t face him again”, the abbess’ first reaction is “are you in ~love~ with him?” when any woman’s knee-jerk reaction would be “GIRL WHAT TF DID HE DO AND SHOULD I CALL THE POLICE”

FINALLY!!!!!

Someone said it!!!!!!

I think everyone here is forgetting that Maria von Trapp was a real person, and that in real life, she asked the mother abbess of Nonnberg Abbey for advice, and she told her that God wanted her to marry Georg von Trapp:

Like, I’m all for dunking on oblivious male writing, but that is actually what happened. Except in reality it’s worse, because Maria says she didn’t love Georg von Trapp, and that she really only loved his children:

I think this is less a cautionary tale about bad male writing, and more an example of how women in positions of power can perpetuate sexism, and how that can lead to vulnerable women ending up in potentially dangerous (or at the very least, unhappy) situations.

This is an important point that I think a lot of people don’t acknowledge. I think another thing is for some reason people will acknowledge that some transfems never achieve passing privilege, but people talk as if all transmascs are able to pass and be treated as men 100% of the time, when many of us don’t pass or pass inconsistently. And even if we do pass, pervasive transphobia results in us rarely achieving the same systemic level of privilege that cis men do. Otherwise, you would see way more trans male CEOs, politicians, and other positions of power, and institutions built to serve trans men. But you don’t. People tend to greatly exaggerate/over-state the privilege most trans men are afforded and minimize the struggle / oppression they face.

I think it’s also important to say that this doesn’t mean that transfem people get “male socialization” or whatever. They might be treated similarly to cis boys by other people, but the way transfem people, and even certain groups of cis boys, internalize that treatment is just as significant, if not more so.

I really do hope that they never find the woman who ruined the Tour de France this year. I hope the international manhunt gets them nowhere and this woman becomes the D.B. Cooper of bad cardboard signs

For those unaware: A woman holding a single handmade sign up to the cameras at the Tour de France accidentally knocked a cyclist at the front of the pack off of his bike, causing a pileup that became the largest mass crash in the race's entire history. She fled the country and there is now an international manhunt to find her and sue her.

If you are okay with the word "breeder"

…you probably don’t know how it is used or its history.

I know a lot of people think it just means straight people and it’s a harmless jab at the privileged but it is not.

It is a biphobic, cissexist, racist and generally awful term.

As you can see “breeders” was chanted at bisexuals during London Pride this year and this is not an isolated incident, this is a regular experience at Pride around the world for many bisexuals. It is not only equating them as straight people (since this insult is used against straight people too) but also hypersexualises them for being “good breeders”, there’s the biphobia.

As the comic demonstrates this is especially hard for people who for whatever reason cannot have children, having problems “breeding”, this includes people who have misscarried, people who have recovered from illnesses where their reproductive parts have had to be removed, trans people who have undergone gender ressignment surgery and intersex people. It is essentially stripping people down to their reproductive capabilities and genitals, there’s your cissexism.

The word also has a very racist history, during the slave era “breeder” was often used to refer to black women who were designated for breeding new slaves and even now “welfare breeder” is used as a derogatory term to refer to, primarily, black single mothers. When this word is aimed at poc, especially black and latina women, it brings up a reminder of racism and being stripped of their autonomy to become livestock, there’s your racism.

It can also be very misogynistic when it is aimed at women since reducing women to reproductive value in general is a core value of misogyny.

Seriously don’t use this word, it sucks, it hurts people, let it die.

any time i hear the insufferable transphobic athlete arguments i think of that one time in middle school when my boys lacrosse team did a full-contact scrimmage against the girls team (who typically play with limited contact) and i, a six-foot, 180lb defender, got utterly laid-out by this 5-foot-nothing girl experiencing the newly-unleashed animosity accompanied by violent sport and as i looked up at my assailant from flat on my back i experienced a brief bout of heterosexuality and fell wildly in love and then had to be taken to the ER because i had a concussion

Post from Sheila Toll reading:

I am a Family Doctor and I want to keep a promise made to a patient.

Julie was a healthy, post-menopausal woman in my care who came in for a periodic health examination. One of my routine questions, in what is called the “Review of Systems”, was to ask if she had experienced any vaginal bleeding.

She said “No” but then laughed and added, “Other than when my period came back for a few months last year”.

All health care professionals are taught early on that ‘vaginal bleeding in a post-menopausal woman is Cancer of the Uterus until proven otherwise’. This comment by Julie was, therefore, a red flag (no pun intended) prompting further questions, an examination and an ultrasound of her pelvis.

Julie was surprised to see me so concerned, especially since the symptoms had not recurred over many months.

Sure enough, a pelvic ultrasound and tissues sampling confirmed Cancer of the Uterus.

Julie underwent a hysterectomy and radiation therapy. She is now healthy, cancer-free and is expected to stay that way.

After all this was done, Julie sat me down for a talk. She told me she’d had no idea a ‘short return’ of her period after menopause was a danger signal. Furthermore, she addressed the topic with friends over coffee and discovered that, out of 20 women, none of them knew this symptom was abnormal! She admonished me to “Tell women this! Don’t assume we know it!”

From that day on, I have kept Julie’s advice in mind when talking with post-menopausal patients. But recently my wife suggested that I should take this to a wider audience.

So, Julie, this is for you:

If you are a post-menopausal woman and your period ‘comes back’ or you have even one episode of vaginal bleeding, (start all caps) Tell A Health Care Professional (end caps) and insist on having it investigated!

Wishing you are good health and long lives.

People horrifically fucking up facts about evolution and genetics too support their stupid beliefs or to seem smart and “rational” is probably one of my big pet peeves

Avatar

Yeah. An enormous number of racists, misogynists, homophobes and transphobes I’ve met eventually whip out something about evolutionary biology and they never, ever, ever, ever have the slightest shadow of even a half-right idea what any of it means or ever cite a claim ever actually made by a scientific study.

Here’s a quick handy reference list or anyone who isn’t sure:

  • Homosexuality does exist in almost all social species.
  • “Alpha males” are not a real phenomenon and in fact the most aggressive males tend to be the least reproductively successful.
  • “Survival of the fittest” simply means that the success of a species hinges on how well it “fits” its environment. It does not mean that stronger or smarter individuals are supposed to succeed. Those things can even be a detriment in nature by wasting too many resources.
  • “Race” is not a biological concept. Someone who looks different from you has the same human genes, just a different grab-bag of dominant traits.
  • Evolution is not a march towards higher complexity, more intelligence or even more adaptability. It’s just a fluctuation of characteristics dictated by environmental pressures and mutation. A slime mold isn’t “less evolved” than a hawk, just adapted for success under different parameters.
  • People didn’t evolve “from apes.” It’s more complicated than that. We are a category of ape, sharing a common ancestor with the other apes.
  • No human on Earth is “closer” to an evolutionary ancestor than any other. We all descended from the same one.
  • Neanderthals were also a “sibling” species of ours. We didn’t evolve from them.
  • Some of us did, however, cross-breed with Neandethal man. It is exclusively non-African races, such as white people, who still carry hybrid human/Neanderthal genes. Whoops, sorry “white purity” skinheads, you’re actually mixed with a whole other species.

Some more stuff!

  • Humans are actually more genetically homogeneous than most people suspect. This is possibly due to a population bottleneck at some point in our evolutionary past. Two chimpanzees from different sides of a jungle are likely more genetically different to each other than any two human beings in the world.
  • Our big brains may help us use tools, but what was really principal in their development was the need for empathy, communication, and cooperation.
  • Humans. Are. Social. So social it drove an incredibly energetically costly increase in our brain size.  Don’t believe anyone who says its our nature to fight “every man for themself.” We’re humans, not bears. We fight for each other.
  • And we always have. Fossil remains are found of ancient humans who bore signs of crucial mobility impairments that lived to notable ages. Some even have sticks or other mobility aids – community care and support is our way. We don’t cast off those with impairments, we stand by them.
  • Human sexual dimorphism is on a decreasing trend. Our ancestors had greater difference in canine size and overall size. Our dimorphism gap has gotten smaller.
  • Occam’s razor is the principal that whatever is the simplest explanation is probably the most likely one. Don’t believe someone who says the reason we evolved bipedalism is so that males could carry gifts to females to woo them. Yes, this is a real ‘theory’ on how bipedalism evolved.
  • Skin tone is an adaptation of UV levels vs vitamin D levels. Both come from the sun. UV is harmful, so where sun is plentiful populations develop a darker skin tone for more protection. The skin needs sun to create vitamin D, so where sun is scarce, the skin tone lightens to allow more sun in. This is literally all it is.
  • Final thing: No one’s mind is really equipped to fully understand how long a billion years is, or a million, or even tens of thousands of years. Evolution takes place over a loooong time. Its very, very, slow, slower than we can really comprehend. We can’t “stand in the way” of natural selection by caring for our ill. We don’t need to “help” evolution in any way. It inevitably happens, but not on any sort of timescale we could possibly affect, so don’t fall for anyone that tells you not to “stand in the way” of natural selection. That’s fascism, and its utterly pseudo-scientific.
  • Not to mention natural selection doesn’t have a “will” that you can stand in the way of. Its not an entity with wants, its a millions-year long process. And its impossible for our decisions to “stand in its way.” Our decisions to care for one another are what brought our species where it is, plain and simple.
