So I actually decided I hated Qui-Gon Jinn literally before I hated anyone in the freaking franchise. It was in fact, my loathing for him that led me to realize how much I didn’t like Yoda. I should also note that I literally only saw Star Wars for the first time like. six months ago, and can you believe how far my life has fallen that I know all this stuff by now oh my god star wars why.
Qui-Gon Jinn:
- Refused to take Obi-Wan as a padawan at first and was actually extremely rude about it on multiple occasions like goddamn a simple “no” already wrecked the kid’s life could you maybe not go into how said 13 year old is horrible and worthless thanks cool
- Just. Just freaking leAVES THIS SMALL CHILD ON A WAR-TORN PLANET after giving him an ultimatum of “hey u can do the morally right thing and mediate peace and save innocent ppl which by the way also seems to be our major job descripton OR you can be a Jedi”
- Mind you these first two have technically been made non-canon in recent years but I’M BITTER ANYWAY
- When he meets bby Anakin on Tatooine, he not only supports but even seems to have subtley encouraged a nINE YEAR OLD SLAVE to engage in a brutal, LIFE-THREATENING sport in order to get the parts he needs
- Is willing to bet the Queen’s ship (neither asking the disguised Padme or any of the actual owners of said ship) for a hyperdrive he may have found elsewhere or otherwise obtained
- Tests Anakin for midichloridians without asking his permission or the permission of his mother (frankly creepy, and continues to take advantage of the fact that neither party could actually do anything to stop him even if he did bother to NOT LIE ABOUT WHAT HE WAS DOING)
- Is totally willing to bet to buy Anakin which hey may have been valid in terms of not raising a fuss but seriously there is no moral debate at all about betting on a sentient being in the same wager as mechanical parts
- Is also totally willing to forget about Shmi. Is mostly like “well I tried (sorta) to get both of you but hm guess it didnt work oh well bye”
- Seriously (even if unintentionally) manipulates tiny baby Anakin by telling him he can be a Jedi while a) failing to assure Anakin that he won’t be returned to slavery should he refuse and b) not being able to really ensure Anakin becomes a Jedi
- mind you, Anakin is NINE and was just freed from slavery on a planet ruled by criminals frankly he has no real guarantee that Master Qui-Gon is any different from any other slave master so why provoke him?
- Is the first person to shove the stupidly heavy mantle of Chosen One on bby Anakin thereby essentially dooming any chance this kid may have been seen as anything vaguely approaching normal and forcing him to carry the burdens of what the prophecy entails for the rest of his life
- claims he will take Anakin as a padawan. when someone points out “uh hey did you forget- you already had a kid? i mean, I know its never been in your character to put too much value on this guy who essentially has groveled and done everything for your acceptance since he was 12 but oh my god hes RIGHT THERE NEXT TO YOU” to which Qui-Gon says in the most bored tone ever that Obi-Wan is totally ready to take the trials
- mind you he has apparently never actually told this to Obi-Wan who pulls himself together in order to support the guy who is literally throwing him away aGAIN
- i mean moses on a pogo stick this is the moment i learned hatred you let this kid beg for scraps at your side for over a decade after refusing him at least 3 seperate times only to DITCH him with NO WARNING over a nine year old??!? the fuck
- I am actually overcome with rage rn
- Dies in Obi-Wan’s arms with his last words making Obi-Wan promise to take Anakin. No “I’m proud of you” No “sorry for that spectacle with the council earlier” No “so I know this is traumatizing and theres no way youre mentally or emotionally prepared for raising a tiny child and Im sorry about that”. Just take care of that kid i was all gung-ho about replacing you with
- i should note here i am also 500% ready to fight anyone who says Obi-Wan wasn’t the right teacher for Anakin or that Qui-Gon/someone else could have done better
- If this post has taught you anything its that a potted plant would probably be a better master than Qui-Gon unless you like learning about BETRAYAL
- In the Clone Wars TV show Qui-Gon appears to Obi-Wan on Mortis. Like the asshole he is, his first words are basically to demand if Anakin was trained followed by more interrogation about how Anakin is and really, Anakin is my garbage son too but FFS JINN RUDE
- hEY ALSO GUESS WHAT IM STILL PISSED ABOUT THE WHOLE DITCHING OBI-WAN WITHOUT WARNING IN FRONT OF EVERYONE FOR A NEW SPARKLY PLAYTHING
tl;dr: Problematic Glacier Causes Trouble and Emotional Distress to Everyone Especially the Fave (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Those Who Love Him
YES THANK FUCK SOMEBODY PUT IT DOWN IN WORDS! I’m 200% ready to fight Qui-Gon Jinn any time any day like. Let’s go.
To add to this: the fucking HYPOCRISY of him wanting to train Anakin after everything he put Obi through. The reason he gives for not originally wanting Obi-Wan is that he’s “too angry”. Yet Qui-Gon takes one look at Anakin and decided he’s going to train him.
Not once does he consider Anakin’s suitability to the Jedi lifestyle, even after watching him throw down with Sebulba in the middle of the fucking street. Not once does he consider that hey, maybe the slave kid is going to struggle with the non-violent, no-attachment lifestyle that Initiates are conditioned for since infancy. Not once does he worry about how coming into the Order at nine, as a padawan, is going to effect him within the Jedi social circles.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, a frustrated twelve year old about to be cast away from the only home he’s ever known because he’s “unsuited” for the only thing he’s ever been trained to do is too angry–but the nine year-old slave, dragged away from his only family (who’s still enslaved) and his homeworld by basically a complete stranger is the fucking Chosen One bcuz he’s got a bunch of magic bugs in his blood. I don’t??? Understand???
Qui-Gon Jinn didn’t free Anakin for anyone’s sake but his own. It was an opportunistic power grab, and I will be forever bitter over it.
aND ANOTHER THING; Feemor!!
Qui-Gon was technically Feemor’s master even though Feemor had already been partly trained by another. After raising Feemor successfully to knighthood, Qui-Gon took his second padawan Xanatos. When Xanatos turned out to be kinda an arrogant asshole who turned to the dark side, Qui-Gon had a bitch fit and was so obnoxiously self centered WOE IS ME IM A FAILURE NEVER TO LOVE AGAIN not only is he a massive douche to Obi-Wan (see above) but he also totally disowned poor Feemor and cut him out of his life. Wtf Jinn.
