Writing Resources

Here is a list of writing resources I’ve found useful, in no particular order:

Words, Descriptions, Writing Help

  • Power Thesaurus: The BEST resource for “tip of the tongue” syndrome
  • OneLook Reverse Dictionary
  • Writerology: This site is trying to sell you stuff. But there are also a ton of great articles in their free blog
  • Descriptionary: Help describing emotions and other things
  • Grammarly: Don’t take it too seriously and remember you’re the final arbiter of your own writing voice, but it can help you see things you won’t on your own
  • Hemingway: Similarly to Grammarly, will help with clarity and cadence, as long as you don’t take its suggestions as marching orders. Available online or as a downloadable desktop app.

Worldbuilding

  • Vulgar: Conlanging tool.  Free and paid versions, the free is still very useful, but I have the paid version and have definitely gotten my money’s worth from it (but I like conlanging).  Learning curve is a little steep.
  • Inkarnate: Mapmaking tool. Again, free and paid versions are both solid.
  • A World-Building Checklist: VERY comprehensive
  • Fantasy Globe: Create a virtual globe of your fantasy world

Name Generators

  • Fantasy Name Generators: The gold standard
  • Donjon Generators: Generators for names (including from your own list of names), as well as a lot of other things, like maps, calendars, inns, towns, even whole worlds.
  • Fake Name Generator: Generates demographic info, fake addresses and phone numbers, height/weight, etc. along with names
  • Not Another Tavern Generator: Generates bars complete with bartenders and general atmosphere, primarily for fantasy settings

I know this is the Anti Small Talk Website but small talk is one of the most effective social glues out there for getting to know people and forming friendships with them.

When I was just starting out at a job right after college I had a coworker who I thought was the nicest person alive and after a few weeks I realized this was just because she consistently asked other people things like, "How ya doing? Whatcha having for lunch? Got any weekend plans? Seen any good movies lately?" instead of politely ignoring everyone around her.

Hey, the ACLU is getting people to send letters to your Reps to have Congress pass the No Kings Act.

This act would make constitutional amendments to ensure that even sitting presidents are held liable for their actions. That NOBODY is above the law.

Their goal is 150k messages sent and at the time of writing this they're about 2.1k off from that goal!

ACLU gives you a prefilled message that you can edit to send to make the process easier, and will send it out for you.

This only takes a few minutes!

Not unreality, not a joke: I have never posted such a thing before here but- Please do this one for whatever good it might result in.

Terms and Conditions Apply:

Aliens have found a way to legally and consensually abduct humans for scientific study- they developed an App and spelled out their intentions in the T&Cs. The protagonist is thrilled. Most of the other humans on the ship are not.

Elf Casting:

Your typical isekai protagonist finds himself and his experiences being used as entertainment by two elf lads and their older brother who are wandering around farming content. Turns out, medieval fantasy elves have their own version of YouTube. Who knew? Certainly not (name to be determined).

Time Sensitive

What would *really* happen if a 19th century English Lord stumbled through a time rift carelessly left open by a time-travelling historian?

Dirty Rotten Futures

In the future, people have to carefully manage their filthiness in order to keep the nanobots programmed for cleaning from inadvertently killing them all off.

In a monumental discovery for paleontology and the first of its kind "Mummy of a juvenile sabre-toothed cat Homotherium latidens from the Upper Pleistocene of Siberia"

Abstract The frozen mummy of the large felid cub was found in the Upper Pleistocene permafrost on the Badyarikha River (Indigirka River basin) in the northeast of Yakutia, Russia. The study of the specimen appearance showed its significant differences from a modern lion cub of similar age (three weeks) in the unusual shape of the muzzle with a large mouth opening and small ears, the very massive neck region, the elongated forelimbs, and the dark coat color. Tomographic analysis of the mummy skull revealed the features characteristic of Machairodontinae and of the genus Homotherium. For the first time in the history of paleontology, the appearance of an extinct mammal that has no analogues in the modern fauna has been studied. For more read here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-79546-1

I always knew it was possible, but I never dared to hope.

OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH LOOK AT THIS WE HAVE A SABERCAT MUMMY AAAAAAA

We now have concrete evidence for what saber-toothed kittens (well, at least one species) looked like in real life, and that can in turn help inform what the adults looked like!

To summarize the main points from the paper:

  1. Seems like they were dark brown, with longer fur on the neck and back than on the legs; some of the photos make the mummy look almost shaggy. I don't see any obvious spots or other patterning, but the muzzle and paws look to be a little lighter in colour.
  2. They had what seems to be a "moustache" of longer fur at the corners of their mouth (Or maybe "sideburns", more like a lynx; it's hard to tell from the photos, and the paper just says "In the region of the mouth corner, the hair is significantly elongated". It also looks to me like there's a bit of a beard going on in the chin region, but I can't say for sure).
  3. The ears were small and round, as would be expected from an animal from a cold climate. The nose was typically feline, but the upper lips were more than twice as long as a lion's, proportionally; maybe there's something to the "bulldog" hypothesis after all.
  4. The paws are short and rounded, with no carpal pad (wrist bean). The paper doesn't bring it up (and it might just be an artifact of preservation) but in the figure the toe beans look like they're covered in fur, like a lynx? I could be wrong, though. In any case, the shape and structure of the foot look like adaptations to walking on snow.
  5. Everything else about its proportions and muscle distribution was about what you'd expect based on the skeletons of the adults; powerfully built neck and arms,

In conclusion, this is the most exciting thing I've seen all year and I NEED to find the time to draw a mama Homotherium caring for her babies in the middle of winter

ANNIE HSIAO-CHING WANG

ARTIST

The artist statement is pretty awesome too.

As an artist, Mother is wise in its creation. Mother not only brings forth life but also a continuous matrix of experiences between Mother and Child. Motherhood is a long-term process filled with a myriad of complex emotions. This complexity cannot be solely expressed through saccharine images of Mother and Child, nor by the image of the embodied Mother willingly sacrificing herself for the sake of her children.
All these motherhood stereotypes are to Annie Wang a tedious and inevitable sermon that offers her no solace. It is from this that the original motivation for this series derives. Starting from the first self-portrait taken in 2001, a day before giving birth, she and her son would take a new photo together in front of the previous formal family photo every time they had a common life experience. Thus, the different stages of life and appearances merge to form a single layer.
These Mother and Child photos, create a dialogue compressed into a peculiar space. From this dimension emerges a complicated, fragmented, and diverse recording of motherhood. Annie has been working on this project for 22 years and will continue to do so, using “mise en abyme” as an autobiographical approach to writing history. Hoping that through the accumulation of years and the reappearance of her own motherhood, she can reverse the stereotype that mothers must sacrifice, and thus redefine motherhood. She wants to demonstrate that within the same period of motherhood, the roles of artist and mother can transform from a difficult coexistence into a fusion.

I was wondering if people on tumblr preferred gifs to videos. Many people told me that the sound was missing (and because I'm proud of my owl dubbing). I repost the video version here

I think it's important to remember, as a rule of thumb, if you take advantage of a social service, it actually makes it easier for other people who need that service to access it. Most of the time, when these services get cut, it's because politicians will look at usage and say "see, no one is really using this thing, we can afford to trim the budget for food stamps by at least half". Whereas if you decide to step up and use these programs, even if you feel like you "don't really need it", at bare minimum it's another data point advocates can use to say "hey, look, people are using this thing, this is an important service we are providing, do not cut our funding".

I work at a nonprofit, and it is absolutely wild explaining to folks that being part of a program that reduces their energy bill actually helps us get funding to help even more people get energy bill savings.

You aren’t taking resources from anyone by using programs you qualify for. You are making a case for those programs being important enough to continue to exist and (in many cases) grow.

We live in a world so controlled by the idea of resource scarcity that we reason "If I get help, that must be taking help away from someone else!"

This is what I tried to explain to US platforms like Patreon when they suspended my account for having a nude statue as the background image: I live in Europe, I can go and see a nude statue within a 5 minutes walk. Children can see them, they're not in some 18+ container. I will never understand those policies.

Can some folks who have lactated please confirm whether that is actually how milk emerges from the boob?

Just a grown ass adult having a body horror moment here

Yeah, kinda. Usually only if your breasts are very full of milk, like you just had a baby or they haven’t nursed in a while. There’s 4-6 nipple pores that the milk comes out of and it can squirt in all directions like that.

My kids liked to squish my boobs to make them do that. It was hilarious.

bodies are so weird
