Swarovski crystals are lead glass created using sand, quartz, and various minerals. First created in 1892 by Austrian glass cutter David Swarovski, they owe their famous shine to their high refractive index achieved by precision cutting and polishing. The technique is so refined it can create over one hundred facets on a single crystal and is also used to manufacture high precision optical instruments like telescopes and binoculars.
Swarovski crystals made their film debute in Marlene Dietrich's 1932 drama Blonde Venus.
