Drew this in honor of Maryse’s beautiful character development! One of many reasons why we NEED TO #SaveShadowhunters
#still not over this wonderful growth #from a greeting so passive aggressive it can’t be mistaken for anything but the insult it is #to this #genuine humor and warmth towards the man she thanked for loving her son #i’m gonna go in my corner and cry now

What I love about this is how it demonstrates Maryse's growth over the last episodes. 💜
Remember her snide comment at the party for Max' rune ceremony? She was trying to insult Magnus in any way she could, after seeing she couldn't get Alec to get rid of him the way she wanted.
But this - this is an amicable tease, her eyes sparkle with mischief the way they did at the Lightwood family dinner when she teased Magnus about being older than her. I love it. 😍
God, I ship them so hard!!! 😍💜
I was thinking of this and when Todd hinted at the large possibility of a family dinner + Magnus and I though of this.
Imagine Maryse and Magnus laughing over stories of Alec’s childhood over the dinner table, Alec pretending to roll his eyes but is secretly enjoying the genuine relaxed atmosphere between his boyfriend and his mother.
But then Maryse asks “So, Magnus about your childhood?” In a really relaxed manner which kinda causes Magnus’s laughter to die and he freezes at the unexpectedness of the question.
Alecs eyes quickly dart to Magnus giving him a worried glance and tries to make Magnus feel better by saying “mom- I don’t think it’s a good idea-“
But Magnus kinda snaps out of the haze he was in and interrupts Alec softly by saying “No- Alec. It’s fine.” He takes a very controlled breath and Alec takes Magnus’s hand under the table and squeezes it reassuringly.
Magnus slowly begins to explain how it was difficult without his mother at such a young age. How hard it was at times with all the hardship and oppression he faced and being alone in Indonesia as a child is what sparked his affection for helping others who felt lost and alone but their were lighter moments in the darkness he felt.
Maryse is quiet and payed her full attention to every word he said - tears filling in her eyes like she was finally understanding Magnus for the first time and it broke her heart envisioning a small Magnus like it were one of her own children struggling to get by. In that moment she kinda tells herself that she’ll try to be the mother figure that Magnus never had and be that person that he can go to if he needs anything or someone to talk to.
But she only tells Magnus this - recalling that dinner about her then decision - at Magnus and Alec’s wedding during her speech as mother-in-law in a beautiful moment of sharing her promise to him which brings tears to both their eyes.
