thinking about how, as a child, kaz’s favorite trick seemed to be watching something disappear, and then he grew up and fell in love with a girl who could vanish into thin air, and how we’re told that when he looks at inej, he feels like a boy again and believes that there’s still magic in the world. imagine loving magic all your life, and then discovering that magic loved you too.

requited edizzy but they both agree that stede is better for ed, or at least better than izzy, better than the years of history between them that makes it hard for them to undo everything they’ve become. stede & ed work it out. izzy & ed dont. izzy leaves without anyone noticing.

ed forgets about it, buries the kraken, buries izzy in the space in his head where his mistakes live. then one day they pull into port and see izzy with a new crew. he looks happy, content. ed knew he was better without izzy, but didn’t think about how izzy was better without him. 

stede insists they should try to make up, but ed refuses, can’t do it, fears it. the burned bridge between them is a scab and he knows if he keeps picking at it then it will never heal. ed watches izzy disappear into the crowd. he doesn’t see izzy again until stede’s funeral.

stede had died in his sleep. townspeople give ed condolences using the alias he now lives by. and once they’re all gone there’s izzy, awkward lopsided gait, no weapon in sight. ed says “you’re here” and izzy says “not for long” and izzy spends the night but they dont sleep together besides literally sleeping together. ed puts his cold toes against izzys warm legs like it’s easy, like they’re still gaunt teens learning how to live. asks izzy to stay until it’s over. falls asleep before hearing izzy’s reply. 

the next few months pass easily too, and months turn into years, and ed says “we could’ve been doing this the entire time” and izzy says “didn’t know it was an option” and izzy stays because ed asked, because ed told him to wait till it’s over, so izzy waits till it’s over. 

he buries ed beside stede.

i want an awkward exes era for ed and stede SO BAD. i love a dramatic reunion in fic but my real wish for canon is to see them both trying to play it cool and act like it didn’t mean anything to them and they’re doing SO MUCH BETTER now they are thriving and not pining WHATSOEVER

also if you think that wouldn’t still hit the angst beats pls consider: ed being (apparently) with some smarmy-calico-jack-type and stede tells him he deserves better and ed scoffs “oh what, like you?” and stede says no (bc ed deserves better than him too)
