A container filled with Tulipa ‘Brown Sugar’ (tulip). The flowers are sturdy and sweetly scented. It really feels like spring when the tulips bloom.

Looking great with the silver foliage of Jacobaea maritima 'Silver Dust' (silver ragwort) are the early yellow flowers of Narcissus 'Tête-à-tête' (daffodil). One of the most popular of the dwarf daffodils that are very reliable performers for a range of locations and uses.

Outside the Stamford Library, Lincolnshire, was this container which included the evergreen Ilex aquifolium 'Argentea Marginata' (broad-leaved silver holly). This female holly has white-margined, dark green leaves and masses of bright red berries in autumn through to winter. It's particularly suitable for urban or coastal sites since it copes well with pollution and salt-laden air.

Cuphea hybrida (Mexican cigar plant, var: ‘Fuente’ and ‘Cristo’)

Every year we buy a Mexican cigar plant for our resident Anna’s hummingbird “Arnie”. It is said that hummingbirds like the color red, so last year we bought a white and a red plant to test this hypothesis. Sure enough, Arnie ignored the white Cuphea and preferred the red one. 

This year we bought a red Cuphea and a purple one. We’ve put both plants side by side and Arnie still seems to go for the red one. I’ve only seen Arnie twice this year and as any statistician will tell you, you need a minimum of three points of data to establish a trend line. It’s too early to say which plant will win the race but if the purple one is a no-hitter, I’ll buy two red Cupheas next summer.

This stone container complimented the planting of the grey succulent Sedum spathulifolium 'Cape Blanco' (spoon-leaved stonecrop). This plant has fleshy rosettes which have a white bloom which intensifies with drought and in summer there are yellow flowers.

These small pans of early spring bulbs were a cheerful addition to the top of this wall. The display made it easy to admire these delicate flowers including the bulbous Iris 'J.S. Dijt' (Reticulata) which flowers in late winter or early spring.
