I feel like as a fandom we don't talk enough about the Fisher King. No, I don't mean the actual episode - that is an entire other post in itself. I mean the actual Fisher King.
How Merlin meets an ancient being that was well cared for and loved, who has lived for centuries to the point that his actual name has been forgotten and all that is left of him is a desolate land and crumbling castle.
And that the King that Merlin meets doesn't ask for greeting or hospitality, but instead death.
Isn't it such a coincidence that a powerful person has stayed waiting for the time of the Once and Future King? Left, forgotten, aged, exhausted and begging for an end?
The Fisher King isn't a foreshadowing for Arthur's failed destiny, but Merlin's eternal doom.
The Fisher King is Merlin's later parallel.
To add, his kingdom, Perilous Lands, was also directly influenced by the Fisher King. Merlin was one of the important key players in Albion. He's a big influencing factor in Albion's state.
Merlin is one of the few (if not the only one) that will be able to take care of the most dangerous threats. At the same time, he is one of the biggest threats there is, being the most powerful sorcerer to ever live.
He's also got influence to the other key players. He's a trusted confidant and adviser of the King of Camelot, and sorcerers and druids across the land revere or hide or fight him. Hell, Merlin actually killed two Kings (King Rodor and King Uther (by accident tho)), almost got King Bayard killed (not by intention), and helped in saving King Odin, King Rodor and Princess Mithian. I'm pretty sure that killing or saving a royalty would generally affect the whole affair of a kingdom or two.

In that moment, Merlin couldn’t just stand there and watch as the event unfolded. He didn’t know what he was thinking, or if he was thinking at all, but Merlin asked a question that silenced the whole village. “Does it have to be a woman?” And that’s how Merlin was whisked away, primmed up to be presented to the King of Essetir and met other women who were also stolen away from their villages.
i posted a sequel to this :>

"A happy coincidence I met you then since the King has sent me to escort you." "Me? Why? I thought we were just having lunch in his chambers. Isn't it a little early? " Sir Lancelot smiled in a way that made Merlin think that the Knight knew something he didn’t. “We don’t want you to be late then.”
GOD ARTHUR AND MERLIN ARE JUST SO … [KICKS SCREAMS BITES MAIMS KILLS EATS DEVOURS CONSUMES IMPLODES EXPLODES DIES RESURRECTS] THE WAY MERLIN IS SO OUTWARDLY FRIENDLY BUT HE HOLDS SECRETS CLOSE TO HIS CHEST, THE WAY ARTHUR’S OUTWARDLY DISTANT BUT HE WEARS HIS HEART ON HIS SLEEVE. And for someone who was a royalty, Arthur can be incredibly trusting. Once you gain Arthur's trust, you have a friend for life. If someone made a mistake, he'll do anything to prove that it was a misunderstanding or grant that person a second chance.
Merlin, on the otherhand, can immediately flip the switch the second someone showed any malicious intent to Arthur or anyone he cares about. No second chances whatsoever. They usually end up dead too, if they weren't able to flee or leave Arthur alone.
you know why every single person in camelot fell in love with merlin at some point? because he’s Emrizz
Hello! if I have any AO3 readers who are following in this account and read my stories, I have decided to restrict the access of my stories to archive users only.
As a computer science student and enthusiast, I am delighted on how the AI technology has developed over the years. However, I'm not happy on how some people abuse these tools. AI vs writers issue has been at the back of my mind for some time now, which is why I have encouraged my group to choose a topic related to this issue for our research. We have conducted a small study about the use of ChatGPT to academic requirements, and it's quite interesting and a bit horrifying how some people confessed (anonymously, of course) they would submit requirements generated by the AI bot without regards to academic honesty. It made me uncomfortable more than I expected.
I'm not sure why I'm rambling right now. Maybe it's because I just finished privatizing my works. One of the reasons why I have decided to make my works public was because if a person happened to come by to my story, I didn't want them to be discouraged on not reading it just because they didn't have an account. I wanted to share my works. Plus, it's quite satisfying if they get lured to ao3 because they liked your story, right?
I'm not saying that my works were good or they're really worth data scraping, but I do not encourage the use of essay/story generating AI bots for unethical writing. It's actually quite too late as a data scraping deed was already done to the site (last December, if I remember correctly). But this measure was to at least minimize (hopefully) any future data scraping attempts. My stories might not be good, but they're my stories, my escapes. And I want to protect my stories.
To my readers here that might not have an account to AO3, I'm sorry for the inconvenience. But if I were you, just make an account. AO3 is awesome. It's worth it.

those rooms are full of spiders merlin has personally named and befriended
do u think merlin just randomly screams in genuine distress whenever he finds a dead spider in their chambers regardless of his company
Merlin: NOOOOO GEORGIE *carefully cradles the lifeless insect body*
Uther, getting his annual checkup: there's something seriously wrong with that boy

merlin where you at arthur's back and he needs you 😭😭😭😭
So I was getting lost in a Merlin Wiki rabbit hole, as one does, and I stumbled across the page for spells. And turns out the writers actually put a lot more thought into it than I initially thought (they're not actually just shouting random words in Old English). But what shocked me the most was learning what Merlin was actually saying to Arthur while he was unconcious in the Poisoned Calice episode. I always thought he was trying to enchant some sort of protection spell to keep Arthur safe while he couldn't be there for him. But turns out he was actually declaring poetry, POETRY to Arthur the whole time!
That's right, Merlin was declaring actual POETRY to Arthur on his deathbed!! I kept seeing the wiki mention verses from a book called Beowulf and I got curious so after a quick Google search, I found out that it's actually one of the most famous epic poems in Old English and I just lost it!! I never thought this episode could get any gayer...
