Episode 2.09 - Smart Power - Nick meets Luke
This is one of my favourite Nick scenes because it’s such a great representation of everything I love about Nick. He keeps all of his emotions in check when meeting Luke out of respect for June, Luke, and their relationship. It is a prime example of Nick’s selflessness coming to the forefront, which is echoed in his later scene with June on Nick’s return from Canada.
Nick feels Luke has a right to know about June’s pregnancy, which is why he tells him, but this news alone is painful enough for Luke to absorb without any further truth bombs at the same time. He could tell Luke that the baby is his, he could tell Luke that he’s more than a friend, but what would it serve at that time? Nick clearly feels guilty watching Luke react to this and, even though the idea that it is Waterford’s baby cripples Luke, Nick knows it’s not his place to tell him about them, and that doing so would only cause Luke more pain.
Luke hurls abuse at Nick, which he takes on the chin, without any retaliation, and backs off. Nick is dignified and calm. He underplays his relationship with June, referring to himself as “just a driver”. I also see this as a moment of self reflection—seeing June’s husband and a glimpse of her past life, Nick can’t see a future with her himself, and loses faith in his importance in her life and the sense of self-worth she has brought him. He agrees to tell June that Luke loves her, which he does, word for word, in the later scene, even though it kills him to do so.
I don’t hate Luke, but I wonder, if the tables were turned, would Luke have been as considerate and respectful towards Nick?
Nick also uses this opportunity to get the letters out to Canada, which is brave and risks his own personal safety if he were to have got caught. But he does it all for June, and he’s so proud of himself when he tells her later. And she is proud of him too. Nick made a difference.
This scene was such a complicated, layered one to play and both actors do so well, but the hidden emotion that Max shows as Nick while saying so little breaks my heart. It was a pivotal scene for me. And, after June explains to Luke via the cassette tape in Season 3 that Holly/Nichole was born out of love and her father is named Nick, who Luke met (an equally powerful scene as Luke reels from this), this bar scene just takes on even more weight for me.
This is The Handmaid’s Tale at its best.
