mini rant about Luke on June being in Canada vs Nick on June being in Canada

i absolutely HATE Luke for violating June's privacy when she explicitly said she didn't want him there. that's very selfish of him. it really irked me when he said "but at least now I know everything" -- girl this isn't about you wtf -- and for him to say that maybe they can just move on? the lack of empathy angered me so much. the way Moira, June's best friend, needed to tell him to be patient with June...? isn't that a given, knowing your wife suffered (for a lack of a better word) for seven fucking years? you didn't have to know what happened to her to be able to empathize with her -- that should be a given, considering you love her! but no, it's not about June, it's always about Luke, him, and how he lost his wife and his daughter, how he failed to save them.

luckily my anger was replaced with heartache on how Nick loves June so much. even being married off to a Wife, he still thinks of her and how he can help her. i nearly cried when he said he put some stuff together about Hannah for June because he knows she will always look for her despite being free. i love how Nick loves June unconditionally -- always making ways for her to be free, even knowing he won't see her again. that subtle nod he gave June when the Marthas were aiding her and Nichole to get out; other guys would kill for a chance to say goodbye and botch up the escape plan, but Nick didn't do that.

I'm not saying Luke has to be a fucking spy to be a decent lover to June but being empathetic and patient with her is the least he can do and HE CAN'T EVEN DO THAT. so yes, I'm team Nick 😾👎

Hi! Now that S5 aired two years ago and filming S6 is on the horizon, are you more optimistic? See you

Hey! Glad to hear from an Osblaine, even if this blog has gone pretty quiet as of late.

Wow, 2 years! Hard to believe, eh? Time is moving far too quickly.

As time passes, we are feeling a bit more optimistic about Osblaine and Nick. We think that with this being the final season that Lizzie & co are smart enough to see that the romance and Nick are key parts of a great show. We also think that with the long, long, longgggggg hiatus that the marketing of the show is going to go hard on Osblaine as the shippers are really good at making a lot of noise, something that this show is going to desperately need in a crowded market after such a long time between seasons. They can't market Osblaine genuinely heavily without the actual content to back it up. In hindsight it makes a lot of sense why there was essentially no Osblaine (aside from that fantasy kiss that was clearly thrown in to give us a bone) in the marketing of S5.

Furthermore the ratings for S5 were really bad. On Rotten Tomatoes it's sitting at a paltry 20%. Metacritic is at 5.2. Imdb has a S5 average of 7.8 and has 4 of the lowest rated episodes in the history of the show. That's unsustainable, especially if they want The Testaments to succeed. It's clear to us that things need to change and part of that change involves looking at what makes the show successful. Those things are (in no particular order): Lots of Osblaine, Nick, and June and the squad kicking ass and taking names. What doesn't result in success for the show? Luke, Juke, and June playing submissive housewife in Canada.

With that said, we have no confidence whatsoever that S6 will ever be as good as S1 or S2. We strongly suspect that S6 will be very similar to S4 in terms of Osblaine content, only with a more present Nick. As much as we want to see something as glorious as S1 and S2 again, we can accept something more like S4.

The way June nods her head and says yeah when Nick mentions that he should have run away with her when he had the chance 😭. Nick being loved so openly and without hesitation is everything! Our boy feels so loved 😭

he was loved and happy and he deserved every second of it. if he could have gotten them all to hawaii in that moment he absolutely would have

How sweet was it to see the power shift between Fred and Nick. For so long Nick was forced to stand by and watch Fred abuse his power and hurt not just June but countless others. And now finally Nick got to use his power to ensure that Fred gets exactly what he deserves while also helping June (and the handmaids) take back their agency that Fred & Gilead stole from them.

Nick Blaine Appreciation Week Day 1: Favourite Nick Scene(s)

Episode 2.09 - Smart Power - Nick meets Luke

This is one of my favourite Nick scenes because it’s such a great representation of everything I love about Nick. He keeps all of his emotions in check when meeting Luke out of respect for June, Luke, and their relationship. It is a prime example of Nick’s selflessness coming to the forefront, which is echoed in his later scene with June on Nick’s return from Canada.

Nick feels Luke has a right to know about June’s pregnancy, which is why he tells him, but this news alone is painful enough for Luke to absorb without any further truth bombs at the same time. He could tell Luke that the baby is his, he could tell Luke that he’s more than a friend, but what would it serve at that time? Nick clearly feels guilty watching Luke react to this and, even though the idea that it is Waterford’s baby cripples Luke, Nick knows it’s not his place to tell him about them, and that doing so would only cause Luke more pain.

Luke hurls abuse at Nick, which he takes on the chin, without any retaliation, and backs off. Nick is dignified and calm. He underplays his relationship with June, referring to himself as “just a driver”. I also see this as a moment of self reflection—seeing June’s husband and a glimpse of her past life, Nick can’t see a future with her himself, and loses faith in his importance in her life and the sense of self-worth she has brought him. He agrees to tell June that Luke loves her, which he does, word for word, in the later scene, even though it kills him to do so.

I don’t hate Luke, but I wonder, if the tables were turned, would Luke have been as considerate and respectful towards Nick?

Nick also uses this opportunity to get the letters out to Canada, which is brave and risks his own personal safety if he were to have got caught. But he does it all for June, and he’s so proud of himself when he tells her later. And she is proud of him too. Nick made a difference.

This scene was such a complicated, layered one to play and both actors do so well, but the hidden emotion that Max shows as Nick while saying so little breaks my heart. It was a pivotal scene for me. And, after June explains to Luke via the cassette tape in Season 3 that Holly/Nichole was born out of love and her father is named Nick, who Luke met (an equally powerful scene as Luke reels from this), this bar scene just takes on even more weight for me.

This is The Handmaid’s Tale at its best.

What's your interpretation of Lawrence's motives in the last scene?

it’s all chess moves, baby.

so, Lawrence is extremely pragmatic and is always looking at the big picture. that means ending the war with Canada. and he’s going to achieve his goal at any cost, including meeting the trigger-happy Commanders halfway and letting them bomb the rebels in Chicago.

though Nick and Lawrence are similar in ways, this is where they couldn’t be more different-- Nick’s focus is on protecting his loved ones, while Lawrence’s is on “doing the right thing” and achieving peace. that puts them at odds with each other when it comes to June.

so i saw the Chicago bombing as Lawrence teaching Nick a lesson in his own twisted way.

as we saw in the first meeting, Nick is still relying on his survival instinct by compartmentalizing to the extreme. keeping his head down and playing along with Gilead has gotten him this far, it’s what works for him, and he’s going to keep doing it.

however, it's not a sustainable way to live now that he’s in a Commander role. it’s all fun and games when he uses his position for June’s leverage, but he also has to make choices that directly contradict his humanity.

Lawrence sees this. he sees Nick’s unwillingness to rock the boat unless it serves June, and that makes him a weak ally when it comes to his own goal of ending war.

so by pushing Nick to coordinate the bombing, he’s pushing Nick to see real, tangible consequences of having power-- and as a result, the bigger picture beyond the scope of June. this will, in his mind, "toughen” Nick up and make him more willing to put aside his feelings and do what’s right for everyone next time, not just June.

and you can see it pains Lawrence to have to take such drastic steps-- just as it pained him when he had to bring in Hannah to break June. but Lawrence, at his core, is capable of making the hard choices that no one else will, because he has nothing to live for and his humanity is so far gone.

however, i have a feeling Lawrence’s actions are not going to strengthen his allyship the way he expects-- but will instead drive Nick to eventually defect. because unlike Lawrence, Nick’s humanity outweighs his pragmatism.

Can we talk about how June always runs towards nick?!? Like after that final scene in ep 3, it reminded me of the scene at the Winslow’s mansion in the snow, she doesn’t let her feelings towards nick to be that obvious, but in moments like those you can see how much he means to her...Also, CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW SHE TOLD HIM THAT SHE LOVED HIM?!? She didn’t need to say it, nick wasn’t waiting for it, but it came from inside her, they have been through so much! And still love each other deeply, after all that happened at s3, I didn’t know where her feelings landed, but this was a special surprise, specially since it’s only the second time she says it! IN FOUR SEASONS !!!

their love? unstoppable. 😔

okay one last thing about nick blaine that should have a proper analysis

the way he softly & gently shows his love to june: the way the touches her, the way he talks to her, the little gestures that comfort her, the way he waits for her to feel comfortable enough around him, the way he lets her have her space, just the things he says to her- he lives this love for june in such a soft & 'free' way, rarely have i seen a character so gentle

bye
