Gun nuts are always saying “what if Jews had guns in Nazi Germany?” What the fuck do you think the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising involved? They loads of guns. Not just handguns and rifles, but heavy machine guns, submachine guns, landmines, grenades and Molotov cocktails. They were annihilated with minimal Nazi casualties. Because a bunch of people who have even the best weapons can’t stand up to an army.

You know who had a lot of guns in Nazi Germany? Roehm’s Sturmabteilung. Didn’t do them any good on the Night of the Long Knives.

Regular violence is a reality in many American schools — and minorities bear the brunt of it. The corporal punishment of students is legally permitted in some 19 states. In 2017, researchers estimated that, in a given school year, 589 children are corporally punished (most often struck with paddles) every day. Unsurprisingly, this violent discipline is disproportionately inflicted on students of color. Black students are twice as likely as whites to be struck in Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. In Maine, black children are eight times more likely to be hit than white children are. Children with disabilities also suffer a disproportionate share of this disciplinary violence. In a representative year, school authorities pinned down, tied up, or otherwise restrained 267,000 American schoolchildren, three-quarters of whom had some kind of disability; such practices have resulted in multiple fatalities. And when children are disabled, as well as black or brown, school authorities’ embrace of what the journalist David Perry has called a “culture of compliance” has translated into acts of remarkable brutality: children being beaten, handcuffed, and pepper-sprayed.
Much of this violence is nominally legal, even socially encouraged — although clearly cruel and expressing the same patterns of discrimination that inflect suspension rates and other kinds of punishment. But violence is a paradoxical thing: It’s a way of exerting control that also always threatens to slip out of control. America’s crowded and beleaguered school systems see a lot of this kind of violence, too: Incidents in which teachers and school administrators whip students with belts, flip their desks, body-slam them, or drag them by their hair occur with distressing frequency. And like every other kind of worker in America, teachers sometimes hurt themselves and each other: Educators have killed themselves at their jobs and murdered their colleagues.

Honestly, take the time to read about these individuals. Remember them. Remember the opportunities that were ripped away from them. Remember the smiles and light they eluded but the terror they endured in their last moments of life. Remember every single thing you read about them and make it a point to fight for a world where this doesn’t become the new normal.

Jaime Guttenburg was 14 years old. Just wanted to make the proper correction.

It makes me so fucking angry that our government is so money greedy and heartless that making the world safer and saving goddamn children doesn’t mean as much as the money they get from the NRA.

Fuck our American government.

It should be mentioned that a good number of these students were Jewish when the shooter was trained by a white supremacist group

” Why is nobody talking about the fact that the Florida shooting was an anti-Semitic hate crime except for Jews? The school was more than 40% Jewish. The shooter was a part of a white supremacist organization, actively and openly hated Jews more than anyone else, would beat up Jewish kids, etc. The head of the white supremacist organization made a public statement that the organization had nothing to do with the shooting but if he had to guess why Cruz did it, it was because the school was predominantly Jewish. “We’re not a big fan of Jews,“ Republic of Florida Militia leader Jordan Jerub stated in an interview with The Daily Beast. “I think there were a lot of Jews at the school that might have been messing with him.”

It seems like only Jewish news sources are reporting on this and the comments on the articles by non-Jews are sickening. People are saying that “Jews want to be oppressed so badly. He shot up the school because they expelled him, not because he hated Jews.” People are saying we’re “appropriating struggles of people of color” by claiming that he killed Jewish kids because he’s a white supremacist. I’m sorry, why can’t we acknowledge that someone shot up a Jewish school because he was anti-Semitic without it taking away from the struggles of other minorities?

When Jews say we are oppressed, people often respond with “show me real hate crimes against Jews and then we’ll believe you when you say you’re discriminated against,” but then someone who talks about wanting Jews dead shoots up a school that’s mostly Jewish and people still refuse to acknowledge that it’s a real hate crime.

The Jewish community is not a large one. I know people who knew some of those kids, who went to Jewish summer camp with them, whose parents were family friends etc.  Fuck anti-Semites and fuck people who shoot children and fuck people who refuse to acknowledge that people are targeted, assaulted, and even killed for being Jewish on a regular basis. According to the FBI, 1.7% of Americans are Jewish, but last year 54.2% of religiously motivated hate crimes were against Jews and 11.5% of overall hate crimes were against Jews.

If your intersectionality doesn’t include Jews, you’re doing social justice wrong.”
