Mem from the Alan-Clan and Zin from the Botan-Clan are two lovers who met during Newroz. Their union is blocked by Beko from the Bakran-Clan who is jealous and who is Mem’s antagonists throughout the story. Finally, Mem is murdered during a conspiracy by Beko. When Zin receives the news of Mem’s death, she collapses on his grave and dies. She is buried next to Mem. The news of the death of Mem and Zin soon spread among the people of Cizira Botan. The people are angry at Beko and kill him. He is buried beneath the feet of Mem and Zin. A thornbush, nourished by Beko’s blood, grows out of his grave: the roots of malice penetrate deep into the earth between the graves of Mem and Zin. The two lovers are even separated in death. The book Mem û Zîn is the main work of the Kurdish poet Ahmad Khani who was very likely inspired by Ezidi culture. Ezidi motifs can be traced in many literary works of contemporary Kurdish writers.
