Heinrich Hoffmann's Der Struwwelpeter is a collection of children's stories meant to warn against a variety of common childhood behaviors, including thumb-sucking, name-calling, refusing to bathe, and in the case of the above tale, playing with matches.

The German page on the left is from a 1933 edition of the stories titled Der Struwwelpeter, oder, Lustige Geschichten und Drollige Bilder.

The translation on the right, The English Struwwelpeter, or, Pretty Stories and Funny Pictures was published by Routledge and Kegan Paul in the 1960s. Our favorite detail in this illustration is how the cats end up wearing the girl's hair bows on their tails.
