1955 advertisement for Furst-McNess Company’s Beauty-Queen cosmetics. “Rich oils, feather-soft powders, wonderfully delicate fragrance ... all the finest possible compounds” formulated and processed in their very own “sunlight laboratories” by “experienced chemists”. Sold only by personal consultants. The featured model seems very satisfied with her tub of “Hormone Cream”.

This broadside from around 1868 advertises soda fountains available from James W. Chapman & Sons of Madison, Indiana. They promise these new models are easy to assemble, clean, and use. The advertisement ends with a series of glowing customer testimonials, like this one from Evans & Cromwell of Morganfield, Kentucky:
Messrs. Chapman & Sons: --Gents--Your fountain is one of the most completely arranged, simple, easy going thing we have ever seen in the shape of a soda fountain. Persons who have drank soda water from this fountain pronounced it the best ever drank. Yours, &c., Evans & Cromwell, Morganfield, Ky., Jan. 29, '68.

This sheet of blotting paper advertises the florist Ernst Wienhoeber Co., which had shops in the Chicagoland area in the early 20th century.
Prior to the introduction of ballpoint pens in the late 1930s, blotting paper was often used to gently blot wet ink left by a fountain pen or dip pen. This helped prevent messy smudges.

Etablissment Nicolas was founded in 1822 in Paris. The first wine retailer to sell wine in glass bottles, Nicolas made a mark not just in the history of wine selling, but also in wine advertising. After World War I the company advertised heavily in movies (including the first animated advertisements), billboards, catalogs, books, and other advertising ephemera. This very bubbly glass is featured in one of their catalogs.

No matter the service or product being advertised, children and animals were popular subjects for 19th century advertising cards.

The World’s Pastime Exposition opened in Chicago on July 3rd, 1886 and was intended to run for 100 days. The exposition was to feature indoor and outdoor sporting contests as well as exhibits about recreation. However, mismanagement led to the exposition only being open for one official day.
This promotional item shows an illustration of “Professor Payne’s Gorgeous Pyrotechnic Display The Last Days of Pompeii” which was to be featured on the opening evening and “twice each week during the continuance of the Exposition.”

Etablissment Nicolas was founded in 1822 in Paris. The first wine retailer to sell wine in glass bottles, Nicolas made a mark not just in the history of wine selling but also in wine advertising. After World War I the company advertised heavily in movies (including the first animated advertisements), billboards, catalogs, books, and other advertising ephemera. In 1921 the character “Nectar” was born at the hand of artist Jules Isnard Dransy and quickly became the face of the company. He was featured in a number of their advertising materials, later alongside his helper and possibly son “Glou-glou” and “Felicite”, who we believe is possibly his wife. Over the years well known artists such as Iribe, Loupot, Cassandre, and Brunhoff as well as Van Dongen, Derain, Lorjou, Buffet, Chapelain, Midy, and Boisrond lent their skills to Nicolas’ advertising campaigns.
