hi! my name is jess. or idiopathicsmile, that works, too. i’m creator and head writer of sci-fi drama/comedy podcast the strange case of starship iris. i’m working with an agent on adapting a long-form extremely AU fanfic called world ain’t ready into an actual YA novel called pretending to date gabe novak. 

also, one time i wrote a fanfic about bucky barnes and captain america coming to terms with modern bananas. barring unforeseen circumstances, this is probably the piece of my writing that will have the widest impact on the world. (oops.)

world ain’t ready/pretending to date gabe novak is set in 2006, which is when i was in high school. (yes, i am ancient. my bones are dust. i speak the long-forgotten languages of trees.) the thing is, i’d like to write more YA novels, but i can’t keep hiding behind the whole “setting a book during the time when i was a teen makes it ~historical fiction” thing forever.

at some point i need to write about modern teens.

if you’re a modern teen (it’s a gross phrase, i know), and you have opinions about how you are portrayed in media, or if you just want to do me a huge favor, here is a survey that will help me write you better. please fill it out, and/or please boost it to other modern teens (do i think the phrase will get less gross if i keep saying it?) it would be a huge help to me!

Venus and the Triply Ultraviolet Sun : An unusual type of solar eclipse occurred in 2012. Usually it is the Earth’s Moon that eclipses the Sun. That year, most unusually, the planet Venus took a turn. Like a solar eclipse by the Moon, the phase of Venus became a continually thinner crescent as Venus became increasingly better aligned with the Sun. Eventually the alignment became perfect and the phase of Venus dropped to zero. The dark spot of Venus crossed our parent star. The situation could technically be labeled a Venusian annular eclipse with an extraordinarily large ring of fire. Pictured here during the occultation, the Sun was imaged in three colors of ultraviolet light by the Earth-orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory, with the dark region toward the right corresponding to a coronal hole. Hours later, as Venus continued in its orbit, a slight crescent phase appeared again. The next Venusian transit across the Sun will occur in 2117. via NASA
